Lotus held an event at a home off Mulholland to give a sneak peek to off 5 new models – the Esprit, Elan, Elite, Elise and Eterne – before everyone else gets to see next week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. A rare sighting – All 4 Baldwins – Daniel Baldwin, Stephen Baldwin (and his daughter Alaia Baldwin), Alec Baldwin and Billy Baldwin - in attendance, along with Demi Moore, Perry Farrell, Olivia Munn … Lotus works with the Baldwin brothers in support the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, part of the Baldwin Foundation … Lotus is also celebrating the launch of Lotus Magazine (inaugural Autumn 2010 issue features Kate Moss on the cover and covers items like 0o7 James Bond movie drive-ons), three separate clothing collections and the first brand concept store in London. Adorable touch from Lotus was the Harry & David coffee cart at the valet! Very responsible!!

Teddy’s 5 year anniversary party is tonight! DJs include Myles Hendrik and iSHOWMYSELF.

30 years ago today a star was born. Katrina Wan, the E! News segment producer who parlayed her tenure at Disney publicity into what we know as Live from the Red Carpet One Hour Special: Pirates of the Caribbean 1, 2 & 3.  Boudoir promoter Brett Gurskyarranged sparklers, 3 ft pizza and played Tu Vuo’ Fa l’Americano just for the birthday girl. Katrina is well known in the film publicity world and is currently the V(I)P of Publicity atIndomina Releasing. Muah!

Also in Boudoir this eve – some cast mates from the Real Housewives from Beverly Hills, namely Kyle Richards who was celebrating her assistant’s birthday. Also in the house: Nicky Hilton, Brandon Davis, Kojo, and not with them but nearby we noticed Britney Spears parents!! The Umansky/Hilton clan was coming down from the Esquire House which was hosting a benefit for Oceana (you may remember them from there LV party earlier this year). The Esquire House, now in its 2nd month, is at a gorgeous home in Doheny Estates with amazing views! The master bedroom was decked out with Ferragamo. There was a fabulous media room theatre too! A cute touch was the “Corum Study” where guests were invited to bid on a special limited edition #1 of 50 Admiral’s Cup for Tourneau diving watch (retail price $8,000) graciously donated by Corum to benefit Oceana, a worldwide charity which focuses their efforts on protecting the world’s oceans.

The 2ND ANNUAL “Honorary Oscars” … Some usual MOCA suspects missing this eve turned up at the AMPAS 2nd Annual Governors Awards (as in Oscars) across town in Hollywood. This event is like the “honorary Oscars.”

The Academy’s Board of Governors basically gets together and decides to honor some of their peers; awards and toast were given to Francis Ford Coppola, Eli Wallach, Kevin Brownlow.

Also spotted: George Lucas, Natalie Portman, Kevin Spacey, Robert deNiro, Sharon Stone, Marissa Tomie, Oliver Stone, Kathryn Bigelow, James Caan, Robert Duvall Justin Long Josh Brolin Sam Rockwell, Clint Eastwood, Francis Ford Coppola and son Roman and daughter Sofia with Somewhere stars Elle Fanning and Stephan Dorf. The party featured a band - The Honey Brothers, Adrian Grenier jammed with them is also an ambassador for Oceana - and several bars with catered food stations. The host for theOceana event was Esquire’s Publisher Steven McCrory. Also spotted at the house: Jeff Goldblum, Theo Alexander, Sam Trammell, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lake Bell and the Four Seasons’ Kim Kessler. Adrian Grenier (with new girlfriend, Emily Caldwell) and The Honey Brothers were up again early the next day for the “Children Uniting Nations’ 12th annual Day of the Child event.”After his set, Adrian sat at the end of the stage, talking with the kids, signing autographs and even letting them get their hands on his luscious locks.

MOCA Gala! After last years extreme performance from Lady Gaga and the Moscow ballet, MOCA was in for a challenge. MOCA Gala Chairs Maria Arena Bell and Eli Broad, Honorary Gala Chair Dasha Zhukova, Dinner Chairs Lilly Tartikoff Karatz, Nancy Marks, and Carolyn Powers, and MOCA Director Jeffrey Deitch delivered with Beck + Devendra Banhart. Chanel Fine Jewelry sponsored the party and Max Azria sponsored the exhibit. MOCA has already had two warning fetes earlier this month, one at Chanel and one at Max Azria’s and the modern museum of contemporary art also had a VIP preview two weekends ago. Much hoopla for one of L.A.’s biggest nights in arts, philanthropy and fun! Last night in Hollywood, the premiere of Black Swan closed the AFI film festival at the Grauman’s Chinese and the after party across the street at the Roosevelt and the after-after party at Beachers Madhouse. As expected -cast members Mila Kunis (friend of the Truffle), Natalie Portman, Winona Ryder, Vincent Cassel (obsessed!!) and Barbara Hershey turned up along with director Darren Aronofsky and studio execs from Fox, Tom Rothman and Nancy Utley and producer Mike Medavoy with wife Irena Medavoy (LA native!).

Seven (jeans) knows how to party. The jeans maker had two back to back parties to celebrate their 10 year Anniversary - first with Vanity Fair (Tuesday night) and then with Vogue Thursday night. Though not all mankind were invited, a cool thing about the Vogue dinner party was an installation set up in the home in Beverly Hills themed for the 7 senses … and you thought there were only 5!

Over at the Santa Monica airport, Sanrio held a VIP night to kick off their 9 day exhibit and carnival at the Barker Hanger.  The company has invited popular artists from around the world to collaborate in two standout art exhibitions: Small Gift Los Angeles and Small Gift Miami, during Art Basel. Small Gift Los Angeles is a 10 day carnival-style event open to the public Friday, November 12 – Sunday, November 21 at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. Small Gift Miami is the East Coast anchor event and will take place December 2 – 5, during Art Basel.

We love offspring! Sam Branson was in L.A. with his dad Richard Branson, and grandmother Eve Branson, for the family’s annual Rock The Kasbah gala.

The Los Angeles Opera often grabs a tenor or two and meets us half from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for a little performance. Thursday, they teamed up with Stuart Weitzman on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills to put on a mini opera behind the store in the Rodeo Collection under the stars.

Earlier in the day, Neiman Marcus held a tea party for Ken Downing, a fashion week front row regular and fashion director for Neiman Marcus.

Down Burton Way at the SLS,  Three Day Rule founders Talia Goldstein (nee Berman) and Valerie Brennan are giving Patty (Millionaire Matchmaker) and Steve (Tough Love) a run for their money with their monthly match-making parties. The SLS was packed with well dressed singles looking to mingle.

And now for something a little different … the 2010 Bambi Awards were held in Germany on Thursday. This is the coolest awards show you’ve never heard of! And likely to have the best dressed attendee list too! Named after Bambi (yes, the deer) these awards honor media and TV influencers. You know it’s cool when Beth Ditto, SJP, Orlando Bloom and Karl Lagerfeld are the headliners! Another need-to-know fact is that the actual award itself, shape of BAMBI the deer, is manufactured by Chopard!! It doesnt get much more chic! See the winners.

The biggest thing on our radar this eve was the Harry Potter premiere in London. The new Harry Potter movie will be in theaters nationwide this November 19th and you can buy advance tickets here (I recommend this).

Actresses Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart attend the Welcome To The Rileys premiere during the 2010 Sundance Film Festival at Racquet Club on January 23, 2010 in Park City, Utah.

The weekend has opened up well with some interesting documentarians bring shorts to Sundance Day 1 (Thursday) such as Senator Edward Kennedy’s acclaimed documantary-making daughter Rory who takes a look at our fence building project on the Mexican border, Pablo Escobar’s own son comes clean in a documentary about the crazy mo fo in Sins of My Father”, Spike Jonzes shows his dark and wierd side with a freaky semi-animated short about robots plugged into the system, blah, blah, blah and DRUM ROLL PLEASE … Adrian Grenier is a stand out in this category with his film about a pre-maturing star struck teen he took pity on and indulged in this documentary featuring tons of A-listers about the world’s obsession with celebrity – why this is such a mystery to Adrian is beyond me – everybody loves a good story and beautiful things. Simple as that.

In the category of MAJOR A LIST stars at Sundance, Ben Affleck and Tommy Lee Jones showed up to the premiere of The Company Men, a story about corporate downsizing. I use to looooove Tommy, but I feel like he’s just done too many movies. Is that wrong? Nothing wrong with working and making money I suppose … Ben Affleck sans Jennifer and getting testy with the cameras (see pics below). I love Ben because he looks like my ex-boyfriend. The most interesting thing to me here is little Sasha Speilberg making her way down the red carpet looking like an exact brunette version of her mom, Kate Capshaw. When Kate and Steven were first dating, he lived up the street from me off Coldwater Canyon and Jessica Capshaw was a friend (Harvard-Westlake). I remember when they wed, bought their house together in the Palisades, had Sasha, adopted Theo and we graduated and went to college … but I hear life went on for the Speilbergs after I left L.A. and they continued to adopt and have children. They are also at my neighbor’s house (Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson) in Malibu Colony all the time – though not recently since they been renovating.

Another interesting film from an actor – Josh Radnor of How I met Your Mother – which co-stars the most genius actor of all time NPH! (read: Neil Patrick Harris for the non-believers) – has directed a film good enough to make it to Sundance and sounds like The Pursuit of Happyness meets Swingers, and stars my favorite actress with a ritzy profile – Kate Mara (Transsiberian (2008), Entourage (season 6), Iron Man 2 (2010) – stand back Paltrow – Mara’s family owns the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers; she is the great-granddaughter of Giants founder Tim Mara, the granddaughter of late Giants owner Wellington Mara on her father’s side, as well as the great-granddaughter of Steelers founder Art Rooney on her mother’s side. Mara’s uncle is John Mara, the president and CEO of the Giants, and her father is the vice president of player evaluation. Mara missed the Steelers’ winning Super Bowl XL in 2006 because she was working in Los Angeles. Mara was so disappointed, she added to her contract that if the Giants or Steelers go to the Super Bowl, she can attend. Mara’s favorite Giants game was when she was asked to sing the national anthem in honor of her grandfather, Wellington Mara, who died in October 2005. Mara has regularly sung at home games and season openers of the Giants since about the age of 15 or 16 when her uncle asked her to fill in when they couldn’t find a singer. She has also sung at a couple of Steelers games. She sang the national anthem at the 2006 NFL season opener, dubbed the “Manning Bowl,” where the Giants played the Indianapolis Colts.

We feel soon that you won’t be able to attend any premiere or red carpet without there being flying acrobats coming at you or some artistic collaboration. We believe Hollywood is going to propel performance art into the mainstream and soon gallery owners, art collectors and artists will be as well know as producers, directors and actors.

We are very excited about all this and largely attribute it to MOCA for putting together the correct group of people for this year’s 30th anniversary Gala last night – and by that I am referring to Dasha Zhukova, Francesco Vezzoli and Lady Gaga. The Dream Team!

Total auction dollars raised was 3.5M. MOCA’s chief curator, Paul Schimmel, tour the stars through the MOCA permanent collection at their 30th anniversary gala. Permanent collection includes work by Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Prince, Raymond Pettibon, Mark Rothko, Edward Ruscha (who was in attendance with his wife), Christopher Wool, Larry Clark, Nan Goldin, Franz Kline, etc. In honor of its 30th anniversary, MOCA is also offering free admission through Friday. The exhibition will be up through until Spring 2010. MOCA performers’ costumes are also up for auction online through Nov. 30. All of the funds raised will be used to benefit the exhibition and education programs.

One gala attendee at MOCA downtown remarked: “This event is so big that its insane… How often do you get all of these people in one room together ???? NEVER… Marrying art to ballet (referring to the Bolshoi ballet that was bussed in from Moscow thanks to Dasha) to Lady Gaga’s bizarre antics with notable individuals from all over the world should NOT be taken lightly. This event was more European than anything. NYC-style but very European as well.”

It helps to have star support. And you can credit the powerful turn out last night to Francesco Vezzoli, the Italian performance artist who has produced saucy, sexy, performance and mock art pieces from faux trailers to faux commercials and star A list actors like Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams, Helen Mirren, Gore Vidal, Benecio del Toro, Milla Jovavich and Gerard Butler.

His history of bringing the stars together did not fail last night.

Artist and promoter Louis Carreon said “It was a breath of fresh air – a sexy mix of art and pop culture in Hollywood’s newest art venue! (prism on sunset). One attendee said some people were saying the stage was too small for the ballerinas but that everyone could agree on one thing – It was an important night for L.A.

Griffin, who directed Rodarte’s last fashion film video with Jenny Lewis, attended the after party, which was co-hosted by the Rodarte sisters and Grey Goose. The fashion film director said it was weird that not a lot of people outside these circles seemed to know about the event. The next he commented no one was blogging online and even the major outlets didn’t have stories. Just a bunch of photos with captions lying around the net. Even Style.com which normally would hit such a thing.

A lot of people can’t comprehend the concept that this event marks the turning point of art in L.A. because it is the first time THE RIGHT people have demonstrated how to fuse dance and art with fashion and Hollywood. Soon it will be the norm to expect art collaborations in your fashion and  operettas sung to you as you enter a party and wild dance performances as basic entertainment. It will be as expected to know major art world patrons, artists and galleriest as we now know celebutantes, A List actors and reality “actors”.

But one naysayer has little faith in Los Angeles’ ability to change. “One of the things that is really a plus for NYC is that you can go to Times Square and see the premier of Madame Butterfly @ Lincoln Center on the big screen if you don’t attend the show. There are like 1,000 chairs in front of the huge TV and red petals everywhere! It was such a beautiful idea and really brought people together. What do we have? TMZ! Its such a trek to have to go downtown to see a show… Not even as good of a show as u would see on Broadway or off Broadway… NOT TO MENTION that in NYC u dress up to go c a show and in la people wear sweats and work out clothes. I was so disappointed last year when I went to multiple opera’s and people were like super casually dressed. I’m going to take my aggression out on la and go to London / Paris / Austria, to see a show dressed in a ball gown with spectacles. Sooooo annoying to me because people LOVE art here and we don’t have a good selection ”

We disagree … There is an art and performance art revolution in the making and we are on it! Watch this video from Vogue.com featuring Annie Leibowitz and Grace Coddington – they agree and are planning an incredible performance arts issue for December featuring none other than Lady Gaga! See a pattern people?? In it, Grace says it was “Anna’s” idea to bring in Lady Gaga. Looks like we are not the only ones obsessed with the “performance arts” lately!

Not yet mentioned are the charitable donations from art collector and philanthropist Eli Broad has given the art world in L.A., international super-dealer and co-chair Larry Gagosian, and MOCA board of trustee and gala co-chair Maria Arena Bell and her family. Eli Broad is about to open a new museum in Beverly Hills called THE BROAD CONTEMPORARY ART COLLECTION. He is currently considering the Starbucks building and adjacent lots across the street from The Peninsula Hotel on little Santa Monica Blvd.

Donatella Versace designed costumes for Courtney Love, Milla Jovovich, Benicio Del Toro and Helen Mirren for the trailer of a remake of Gore Vidal’s 1979 masterpiece, Caligula. The trailer, presented on Friday at the Pavillon at the Venice Biennale, is the result of a collaboration between Versace and artist Francesco Vezzoli who has attempted to create a hypothetical remake of what is one of the most controversial films of the last 30 years. As explosive as the original director Tinto Brass’ version, the new film will star Milla Jovovich as Drusilla, the sister with whom Caligula has a passionate affair, Del Toro as Macro and Mirren as Tiberia. It will also feature cameo appearances from Vidal himself and Adriana Asti, who starred in the original film. And Donatella was the perfect choice to dress them. “The challenge,” she said, “was to make the ancient Roman togas modern, rendering them more proportioned, sophisticated and sensual while still in tune with the times. I choose simple opaque jersey for the costumes and inserted the classic Versace symbols such as the medusa and the gold metal chain to give them that contemporary edge.”

2. The second most important thing you need to know is the name “Dasha Zhukova,” MOCA gala co-host.

Dasha is the current reigning social Queen of the non-US territories. She is as well known as Paris Hilton or Beyonce in Moscow and London. She is currently pregnant with Roman Aboramavich’s baby – who is the wealthiest man in Russian and owns the world’s two largest yachts.

Dasha grew up in Los Angeles (Pacific Hills ’99) and moved to Russia and then London when she was tapped to edit Pop Magazine (think US weekly meets Rolling Stone). Dasha put herself on the map by turning an old bus station in Moscow into a gallery for modern art. It is called the Garage Centre for Contemporary Culture (GCCC).

Dasha is in and out of L.A. all the time with the likes of Andrea Casiraghi (heir to throne in Monaco) and they eat at Mozza Ostera and the Beverly Hills Hotel Polo Lounge. Dasha has a US-based clothing line called Kova & T.

The reason why Dasha co-hosting this event is so important is because she has a proven ability to penetrate the art world and make it exciting. She had NO background in art before she transformed the Garage. She had no experience with buying and collecting art before she recently started. The art world does not accept new-comers from Russia who are dating billionaires. But she is completely respected because her choices are impeccable.

IF Dasha returns to L.A. she will focus her energy on REDEFINING the art world for young people. Venice. Aside from street art – there is nothing at all interesting about the art culture in L.A. It’s boring and basically sucks. IF Dasha makes a move to focus her energies on Los Angeles once more, we will have an art culture BOOM OUT OF NOWHERE that will be on par with major film premieres, the Oscars, Laker’s play-off games, and other spectacular events L.A. is known for. Muccia is well-known for collaborations with architects, designers, filmmakers, artists and photographers worldwide -even L.A. based celebrities and party promoters like her friend Amanda Demme, who often handle invites and guest lists for her store parties on Rodeo (look out for the Prada book launch on Rodeo this Friday). Muccia is friends with all the L.A. coolies and is often in Los Angeles. Ergo, MOCA now has a formula. A community of incredibly hip, chic, and famous artists, designers, celebrities, art buyers and gallerinas are about to POP in L.A.Collecting, understanding and being involved in art is about to become as important as it is for ALL Angelenos as it currently is for certain social sets in New York. I am not saying Maastricht will have to move to the L.A. Convention center – I’m calling a new era in art and the way it’s handled in mainstream living, as exemplified by celebrities, films, parties and society in Los Angeles.

“Fashion film” is a genre which not too long ago was barely on the radar and is now booming! The launch of “A Shaded View on Fashion Festival”, the newest fashion film festival, will open Paris Fashion Week this weekend and is the new “must-attend” for editors and buyers and the new “must-submit” for every fashion house and designer. Festival creator, Diane Pernet has defined “fashion film” into 3 categories: music videos, commissioned works by designers and film inspired by clothes, and made independent of the brand. Diane Pernett is co-editor in chief of Zoo magazine and runs the only recognized fashion film website, A Shaded View on Fashion.

“Fashion film in 2010 is what music videos where in 1983″ says Griffin of PRESENT FUTURE FILMS‏, and director of Rodarte‘s 2008 video. Watch it on Griffin’s website http://www.presentfuture.net/. Griffin is en route to Paris today to represent the film in Diane’s festival for Rodarte’s designers, Kate and Laura Mulleavy. Rodarte’s film is meant to represent the darker turn they took for their fall ’08 which was inspired by Japanese horror films. (3:32 mins)



The three day film festival opens Paris Fashion Week for the second year in a row and is called “A Shaded View On Fashion Film“. Griffin’s film, “Vox Humana”, stars L.A. Native Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley fame and has a special cameo from another L.A. Native, Kenneth Anger who is also a legendary avant garde filmmaker. Rodarte is one of several major brands to be recognized in the festival for their participation in the new genre. Others include Gucci, House of Waris, MATTHEW WILLIAMSON/H&M (which stars Eva Herzigova & Vincent Gallo), Gareth Pugh, Galeries Lafayette, Sergio Rossi, MAC Cosmetics, Rick Owens, Jeremy Scott, Yohji Yamamoto and oddly enough – Wonderbra. *(all videos can be viewed here)

The Wonderbra film stars Dita Von Teese, who just had a party in London last night to launch the “Party Edition” bra. The film shows a bunch of scientists all looking for the cure under microscopes and then Dita comes in with lab coat and snakeskin Louboutins to solve the crucial problem. (2:16 mins)

Griffin’s Rodarte film was also just shown at Nick Knight’s “Fashion Revolution SHOWstudio exhibition,” which closed British Fashion Week, and will run through the end of the year, Dec 20, 2009. Photographer Nick Knight has worked with Vogue, Kate Moss, Dior, etc. and also runs the fashion/photography website SHOWstudio.com. Nick Knight is another name to watch in fashion film. A popular piece from Nick Knights’ show is his Brad Pitt short film in which Brad violently throws paint on a blow-up wall photo of himself and reads poetry.

“Flora by Gucci”, directed by Chris Cunningham and starring Gucci model Abbey Lee was also selected in Diane Pernet’s upcoming fashion. Chris is an English music video film director and video artist who is most famous for his work with the the late Stanley Kubrick on the then-unfinished project A.I., which was picked up by Steven Speilberg. Fashion film began in the 60s with pioneering projects like William Klein’s Qui Etes Vous Polly MagGoo and William Claxton’s Basic Black starring Peggy Moffitt (not on my youtube playlist, view here) and trend offers viewers an ever deeper level of insight into the artistic side of fashion. Nick Knight, along with fashion designer Alexander Mcqueen, have done loads of fashion film collaboration. The genre has lurked in the cult and industry depths of art but is now receiving it’s place in the fashion industry spotlight -perhaps largely due only to the recent financial crisis which has made the less expensive forum more appealing than a full-blown show or a traditional print campaign.

The trend of film in fashion is further being popularized by Chanel No.5′s recent mini-film, starring Aurdey Tautou, that shows her searching for, and finally finding, her lost lover on an old fashion train.

Tom Ford could have had an edge into the coming genre as he, himself, is an aspiring director. This year, we will be able to see his first try at film in “A Single Man” starring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore and Ginnifer Goodwin. The stylized suspense drama follows a widowed man around Los Angeles for a day and was screened at the Venice film festival this summer and opens in theatres soon.

“Starring” by designer Jeremy Scott – which was in Diane’s festival last year – is inspired by TV soap operas and the gorgeous women who inhabit them, featuring Asia Argento, Tori Spelling, Lisa Marie, China Chow, Amber Valletta, Liz Goldwyn, & Monet Mazur.
