Pics from last night … Chanel: Her Life

If you happen to be by the Soho House (in LA) this weekend, don’t be surprised by all the little pink ‘CC’s in everyone’s pictures up on the photo wall … for tonight Chanel took over the top floors of the members-only club to help celebrate the new book ‘Chanel: Her Life’ by Justine Picardie (a new Truffle fave) …A lovely talk between the author and Liz Goldwyn, whose grandfather Samuel Goldywn is discussed in the book for his friendship and early recognition of Chanel, was held in the Soho House screening room (avec some slides from the book) and was followed by a garden dinner on the roof with endless wine, champagne, burrata salads, paella, pizza and more. The regular ‘photo boudior’ in the Soho hallway was re-styled for the party with the brands’ trademark double ‘CC’s for guest pics (click thru slideshow above to see). Gift bags included a signed copy of the new book and a bottle of the house’s signature perfume, Chanel No. 5. Author Justine told the Truffle she’s been collecting notes and keeping journals in preparation of the book since 1998. ‘Chanel: Her Life‘ is a beautiful read marked with illustrations by Karl Lagerfeld.

“Starring” Part 1 (Part 2 continued below)

In 2007 Jeremy Scott shot this short film with Beverly Hills/Los Angeles natives Tori Spelling, China Chow, Liz Goldwyn and Monet Mazur who’ve learned from the best. This is film was “inspired by TV soap operas and the gorgeous women who inhabit them,” according to Jeremy Scott, who wrote and directed this little gem of genius.  Monet Mazur plays a housewife, Tori Spelling plays a home-wrecker / gold-digger from Kentucky, Liz Goldwyn plays twin sisters, China Chow plays the scheming maid in this 15 minute film shot in Beverly Hills … the film also stars  Asia Argento, Lisa Marie and Cameron Richardson, and Amber Valletta who makes a special appearance for a mid-show commercial.

The film is also produced by Beverly Hills/Los Angeles natives … Brandon Kraines of Stereo Lab films and Eillot Johnson. The “locations” are actual houses in Beverly Hills owned by some of the above mentioned people. DYI – six of the above-mentioned went to my high school, are my friends and / or cousins. 

“Starring” Part 2

Gad midsommar! What better way to spend Midsummer, the oh so magical Swedish holiday, than to eat, drink, and be merry with Jeremy Scott and Kanon Organic Vodka at the Sunset Marquis Hotel. The North Villa Gardens at the Sunset Marquis were the perfect setting for this ethereal luncheon, honoring the very important Swedish holiday marking the astronomical beginning of Summer which also celebrates fertility, magic, and love. I couldn’t have asked for a better Midsummer thanks to great company, most delicious food (SMH, who knew?!), and specialty drinks for our 3 course luncheon.

I must confess that at one point, whilst hand making a floral crown (Thanks HonestlyWTF!), I felt like I had been transported to a big lush green field in Europe with a blazing bonfire complete with the typical large group of people holding hands and dancing around a traditional maypole.

Midsummer Eve is more of a European holiday slash custom to celebrate the summer solstice which falls between June 21st and June 24th. Each culture has a different date, name, and celebration for Midsummer, but the culture who is most known for celebrating MS are the Swedish.  In Sweden, Midsummer’s Eve is comparable with Christmas Eve + New Years Eve and is considered to be the greatest festival with a lot of dancing, food, alcohol, love, and magic.  Going with tradition, Swedish girls take bouquets/floral crowns they gathered during the day and put them under their pillows in hope of dreaming of their future husband. Legend has it that if the girl does dream of her future husband, she is supposed to be able to shake her floral arrangement and a piece of his hair will fall off.  UM, you KNOW I put my gorg hand made flower crown under mah pillow.

MOCA’s exhibition will emphasize Los Angeles’s role in the evolution of graffiti and street art, with special sections dedicated to cholo graffiti and Dogtown skateboard culture. The exhibition will feature projects by influential local artists such as Craig R. Stecyk III, Chaz Bojórquez, Mister Cartoon, RETNA, SABER, REVOK, andRISK.

A special emphasis will be placed on photographers and filmmakers who documented graffiti and street art culture including Martha Cooper, Henry Chalfant, James Prigoff, Steve Grody, Gusmano Cesaretti, Estevan Oriol, Ed Templeton, Larry Clark, Terry Richardson, and Spike Jonze. A comprehensive timeline illustrated with artwork, photography, video, and ephemera will provide further historical context for the exhibition.

The exhibition will open with a skate ramp designed by pro-skater Lance Mountain and artist Geoff McFetridge. Skate demonstrations by the Nike SB skate team will be held onsite for the duration of the exhibition.

As part of its exhibition sponsorship and ongoing community collaboration initiative, Levi’s® will host the Levi’s® Film Workshop at MOCA, offering a diverse schedule of programming that celebrates the craft of filmmaking and explores the exhibition’s subject matter. Access to the Levi’s® Film Workshop’s resources is open to all and free of charge.

THIS IS A HAPPENING! I consider a great LA night when a convergence of local talent is pooled to create a memorable shared experience; last night MOCA delivered … IN SPADES! After the red carpet and cocktail hour where I never quite made it into the exhibit titled ‘The Artist’s Museum’, organized by Rebecca Morse (then again, I didn’t make it to the exhibit last year as well….); guests proceeded into the tent that was erected in the middle of Grand Avenue downtown LA for the MOCA Winter Gala envisioned by artist Doug Aitken. Rachel Bilson, Chloe Sevigny, Mila Kunis, Elodie Bouchez, Kate Bostworth, Peter Marino, Kristen Dunst, Ginnifer Goodwin … flanked by their publicists and BFF’s at the Chanel table, Chanel fine jewelry being a sponsor for the evening; needless to say plenty of sprarkly bobbles and lace abounded at the longest table in the room.

And about that room … Mr. Aitken interactive aspirations for the evening carried over into the decor of the tent; the walls were painted in a geometric black /white pattern which gave the illusion that the walls were in fact three dimensional.

Also on the walls hung poster art contributed by Bruce Nauman, Raymond Pettibon, Alexis Smith, Laura Owens and several others. I loved the light sculptor that hung above us amidst ‘exposed’ white piping which was also patterned in geometry, designed by architect Barbara Bestor.

There was a bit of eating in between socializing among the many who’s who in the room … my favorite union I dubbed the Grey Table/ #51; not only for the fact that our former Governor Davis was at the helm, but his fellow table mates included Ed Ruscha, super star architect Frank Gehry and their respective partners-all silver haired!

Plenty of artists were in attendance and what a treat to be in their company … Jeff Koons, Roson Crow, Liza Lou, Mike Kelley, John Baldesarri and Catherine Opie - WOW!

Opening remarks by our lovely hostess Maria Bell were followed by new MOCA director Jeffrey Deitch (tho he did attend last year’s gala he was not yet ‘officially’ posted); who introduced performer Devendra Banhart, Beck and Caetano Veloso - who ever brought this talent together on the same stage is genius! They alone left us all swooning …

But wait folks there’s more!

Onto the live art work by Doug Aitken titled WE, which included: farm auctioneers, drummers, the LA Gospel Choir and my ‘ultimate cherry on the top’; a cattle whipper …

Strategically mapped throughout the room; we had pistol quick bidding by the auctioneers, thumping rhythm courtesy of the dozens of Tabla drummers, and chorus splendor by the Choir all in tandem requiring the audience to follow the performance in the fashion of a tennis match!

The grand finale was worth the wait for sure; but first I must share a childhood memory that accounts for my great enthusiasm for this particular piece … my cereal of choice growing up was Kellog’s Sugar Corn Pops (nutritious as there really is corn in the ingredients … ); at the time the box was dominated by a full length photo of a genuine American Cowboy in full gear; hat, jeans, chaps and rope … Sooo when the cattle whipper started his syncopated fire cracker snapping, I was done in … as were all for cheers and hoots followed!

The lack of an official after fete did not deter guests such as Cameron Silver (looking every bit the warrior in a Lesage vest under his dinner jacket), Rachel Zoe, Lisa Eisner, Shiva Rose (super hot in Mark Fast!), Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale from splintering off to Soho House …

Our lil posse opted for a stop @ the local liquor post and a pal’s cozy haven in Hancock Park where we warmed our toes fireside stretching out the evening and enjoying each other’s company …

WHAT: Cocktails to celebrate Tod’s new Beverly Hills boutique which features a new “home” design concept unlike any of our stores throughout the world. To commemorate the re-opening, we collaborated with two renowned Italian pioneers with monumental achievements in the entertainment industry: Dante Ferretti; the Academy Award-winning production designer/art director and Milena Canonero, the three time Academy Award winning costume designer. In homage to Hollywood, Ferretti transformed the VIP showroom on the third floor of the boutique into an elegant, sophisticated lounge area reminiscent of 40’s supper clubs Ciro’s and Macombo – complete with an original 1946 rock-ola jukebox and lacquered paneled walls with amber mirroring. Canonero, in the spirit of Hollywood, designed a “Script bag” which launched exclusively in the Beverly Hills boutique.

The evening celebrated the arrival of the Museum of Contemporary Art’s (MOCA) newly appointed Director, Jeffrey Deitch and benefited Jeffrey’s first exhibition to be unveiled in June.

I’m sure (or guessing) most of you know Waris Ahluwalia, actor and jewelry designer extraordinare. Waris is the definition of cool, don’t believe me?  Look up “cool” in the dictionary. You might remember Waris from the movies The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Inside Man, or Darjeeling Limited, or know him from seeing his picture at all the hottest NYC spots. Not only is he funny, kind, and an awesome jewelry designer, but he also has some seriously cool style…Who else do you know that could wear a summer knit suit with white Birkenstocks and pull it off so effortlessly? Guests drank sparkling water, wine, and champagne while eating pretty and delish finger foods; my favorite was a mini scallion pancake with a cucumber on top. Waris walked around with a handful of Waris Love’s You pins, which I thought was the cutest touch EVErrrr!

If you have been reading the Daily Truffle for a few months, you know that the subject of art in LA (or lack of it) is very important to us.

Spending a lot of my childhood in NYC, and being exposed to museums and amazing exhibits, I developed a liking for anything art related at a very early age.

I am now pleased to say that within the past few months, LA has progressed significantly.  Saturday night alone there were 2 shows focused on photographers; however we still want moreeee!

One of the forces that has helped LA’s progression is Prism Gallery on Sunset Blvd. You may remember Prism Gallery, as it played host to the after party for Moca’s 30th Anniversary Gala.

Another thing I like about is Prism is that it is the product of young minds.  The space is perfect, and I really love that in LA you can go to an exhibit opening and see a diverse crowd of young adults, heavily interested in the works.

In case you don’t already know (where have you been?), here is some info on Prism:

Located on Sunset Boulevard, Prism is housed in a three story architectural space on the western end of the Sunset Strip. The mission of the project space is to become a cornerstone of artistic experimentation, carving a new niche for the arts here in Southern California. The long-term exhibition program, featuring national and international artists, promises to be vibrant and thought-provoking as it works with creative minds to cultivate a challenging and diverse aesthetic experience for the public. The space will also look to integrate lectures and film viewings to create a well-rounded multidisciplinary venue. Alongside the exhibition space, the project space will also house a bookshop with a curated selection of texts and products.

Saturday night, before the nights festivities, including The Weinstein Company‘s party, at the new Soho House, and 2nd night of Trousdale Lounge, my friend, Rachel Chapnik, and I went to check out Nobuyoshi Araki‘s new exhibit at Prism Gallery on Sunset Blvd (put on by Nadine Johnson and Associates).

Nobuyoshi Araki’s: A Perspective, is a veryyyy interesting and thought provoking exhibit of 70 photographs spread across 2 floors.  While the subject of these photos may be too risque, others will thoroughly enjoy them and take a lot away from the experience.

Nobuyoshi is Japan’s most controversial and well known photographer, who has recently shot Lady Gaga in his signature bondage style for Vogue Homme, and counts singer, Bjork, as one of his biggest fans.

I like how Araki took something that is “taboo” and made it so artistic, real, and in some cases beautiful, as if to say not everything of this nature is wrong or perverse, etc.  Yes, there were some images that were hard to look at, but I appreciated the work, detail, and thought that went into all of them.

I say real because most of the pictures were not airbrushed, so stretch marks, cellulite, veins, and other imperfections were visible.

The photos that were in color were amazing, in both bright and vibrant and soft and pale colors.  It became clear that Araki paid very close attention to shadows and highlights.

Guests drank white white, beer, Coco Vita, and other refreshments.

After, most of us headed to Trousdale, where I saw a lot of friends, and everyone drank and danced the night away !

A few on going trends Rachel and I noticed throughout the night:

Most people wore all black

5 or 10 attendants sported a 90s grunge look

About 15 percent of the chic guests had their jeans/pants rolled up in a 50s sort of flood pant style

This intriguing large glass structure had hundreds of small pictures spaced evenly in the middle of the 1st floor of the gallery.  The presence of the photo mural as a whole was strong but when you got in closer, each picture was so different and very detailed.  The photos were of all different genres,I’m guessing an accumulation of Araki’s work over time.

Food served: I don’t think anyone noticed because everyone was obsessed with quaffing the Dom Perignon champagne!
Celebs: It was A-list – Tom and Katie, Quentin Tarantino, Sofia Coppola, Harvey Weinstein, Stephen Dorff, virtually the entire cast of Star Trek – Chris Pine, Zach Quinto, John Cho, Adam Lambert, and party crashers Lindsay Lohan and her mother.
Friends I saw: Nico Golfar, Lady Victoria Hervey, Nathalie Walker, John Flanagan, Cameron Silver, Rick Yune
Clothes that stood out: Adam Lamberts, Diane Kruger and Zoe Saldana came fresh from the Critic’s Choice Awards and looked stunning.

Giant billboards of Liz Goldwyn hang outside Le Bon Marche and at bus stops all over Paris

Another project from friend and L.A. Native Liz Goldwyn (Westlake, El Rodeo) … Le Bon Marché commissioned Liz to create an installation for their Paris store to accompany their California-themed fall campaign, which also includes independent classic car culture decor, Beverly Hills street signs and merchandise from L.A. designers. Photo (left) shows announcements in Paris of Liz’s installation, will be on display inside the store from August 21st-October 12th, 2009. Our friend Starr Elizabeth Haymes was in Paris this week and sent in the pictures. Liz sent me some more photos just taken in Paris this week …

Liz keeps u guessing with her on-going fashion-oriented art projects … who even knew these concepts were options!? How cool! You can read more about her work on her website. Le Bon Marche’s tapped Liz to contribute these installations to the California-themed fall at Le Bon Marche in addition to the store’s own decor and sales campaign, which includes Beverly Hills street signs and designs from Current/Elliott, J Brand, William Rast, James Perse, UCLA, Disney Couture, Kitson, King Baby jewelry, Bonnie Young children’s wear, Ugg boots and L.A. Eyeworks shades.

My intention was to create a “love letter” to my hometown city, Los Angeles. The “Musical Palm Tree” windows were inspired by a longtime daydream of mine. Driving around LA in the magical sunset hours, listening to music and watching the rows of palm trees dot the sky, I would imagine musical stave bars overlaid on top of the trees. The palm leaves became musical notes and I would fantasize about the soundtrack they would reveal.

Photographer Todd Cole shot panoramas of palm trees in LA, which were then arranged according to a melodic pattern I designed.

I approached “Money Mark” Nishita to create the score for the windows. I wanted a joyous song, perhaps one that could make tears turn into laughter. We were inspired by California classic pop; The Beach Boys, Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” and girl groups like the Shangri-la’s, who sang of heartbreak but over driving, upbeat tempo.

An interior installation, called “LA at Night”, consists of a cube structure, inside of which, 5 films play simultaneously, synchronized and symphonic. The films were shot on HD in Los Angeles in the dead of night. The footage includes images of my Underwater Ballet billboards, a public art project shown in Los Angeles in April-May 2009, which consisted of 86 digital billboards within the LA landscape.

These are inter-cut with time-lapse shots of freeways and blown out car headlights, which were layered to create a kaleidoscopic, ‘jeweled’ effect. The images together form a meditation on the nighttime landscape of Los Angel
es; a sky lit by artificial lights beaming from advertisements and car culture. The soundtrack contains no traffic noises at all; rather it follows a meditation, using breath, wind, a low hum, and bells.

“L.A. at Night” interview with Liz Goldwyn from LEXPRESS

Look up today while you’re driving to see a sneak-peak of LA filmmaker, and L.A. Natvie, Liz Goldwyn’s next film “Underwater Ballet”. 86 digital billboards across Los Angeles will loop a series of still images from the 6 minute film in anticipation of it’s May 1st release in – get this – Times Square!! Liz Goldwyn is a Los Angeles based filmmaker. Liz’s first film, Pretty Things, is a documentary showcasing 20th century burlesque queens, and premiered on HBO in 2005 and the CBC in 2006. Liz has amassed an extensive collection of burlesque costumes from l900-1960.

Stats about Liz: Born: Beverly Hills. Residences: London, Los Angeles, New York, La Jolla. Education: Harvard-Westlake, El Rodeo, Concord (MA). Occupation: Filmmaker, artist, jewelry designer.

Her book on the subject, “Pretty Things: The Last Generation of American Burlesque Queens” was published by Harper Collins in 2006 and is the first book about the history of burlesque costume and the queens who wore them. Liz is pictured right autographing copies of her book at a book signing at the Tower Bar in the Sunset Towers.

Liz worked in Sotheby’s newly created Fashion Department after graduating from art school in New York and was a global consultant for the cosmetics company Shiseido. She used to write for French Vogue and in 2002 Liz launched her line of one of a kind jewelry, that was sold at Barneys and Kaviar & Kind. Liz gave me an antique-style charm bracelet with gold-painted seashells for my 27th birthday. Liz also has a collection of vintage sweater clips and head pieces for Opening ceremony, newly opened on La Cienega.

Underwater Ballet will run in its entirety on Spectacolor HD, Clear Channel Spectacolor’s hi-definition display in New York City’s Times Square. The film will air twice per hour commencing at 12:00 noon on Friday, May 1st and until 12:00 midnight on Wednesday, May 6th. The film will show at 10 minutes past every hour and again at 40 minutes past the hour. The first-ever billboard movie premiere is a great example of the reaches brands seek in order remain fresh and innovative. Clear Channel’s collaboration with Liz and Dior follows in suit with many other fashion houses and major brands. This year Prada has invited fashion icons to come in-house to 4 of their flagship stores in London, Paris, Rome and Tokyo and art-direct the whole interior for the season.

The Cartier Foundation scouts new talent and emerging artists and funds, houses and shows their works. Hermes hosts galleries parties and installations for artists every quarter. Apple exclusively uses emerging musicians from Los Feliz and Brooklyn for their iPod commercials. Even the Cuban Companies has the Cu
ban Companies Foundation – specializing in grants for the arts – and run by Mark Cuban’s former-layer brother, Brian Cuban. This new type of “art marketing” helps brands get in touch with potential clients and appeal to current clients by being well-rounded and on-the-cusp. Liz’s art film highlights the up-and-coming art of underwater ballet and features ballerina Deanna Beasom, in clothes from Juan Carlos Obando, whose New York Fall 2009 show Liz styled at Bryant Park.
