#LAnatives: Designer Kimberly Ovitz (Brentwood ’01) & her Spring 2010 Collection

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Family friend Martin Scorsese shows support at Kim

Kim Ovitz

I got an email from Liz Keene at Harrison & Shriftman last fall inviting me to a private sale for designer Kimberly Ovitz who was literally handing some of her best pieces for next to nothing, as designers often do when they have extra sizes and cuts that weren’t not sold to retail stores. The clothes = amazing! My friend bought a gorgeous white tube dress and we oooh and ahhhed over the layered fabrics on jackets, dresses and vests, and the dead-on cool, casual, comfy, perfectly L.A. attire on rack after rack.

I didn’t need to hear her name to know we were dealing with an L.A. native.

As an Angeleno native hunter, I recognized the name immediately as an being alumni from one of my alma mattas - John Thomas Dye. But that’s not where her L.A. pedigree ends … She is also the daughter of Hollywood agent Michael Ovitz, whom she tells me was instrumental in her early dedication to working and mastering all angles of the business  in her industry.

An equestrian since the age of 9, she took all sorts of jobs as early as 14, with J. CrewHerb RitzW MagazineChanel and another of our favorite L.A. native’s Yael Aflalo (Beverly ’95) who had a line called “Ya Ya” at the time. An art history degree from Brown backs her solid industry experience and from her father, Kimberly also learned valuable business management skills and inherited his incredible passion for all the arts – from performance to photography, sculpture to painting.

For her Spring 2010 Presentation, held at Mac Milk Studios in New York, Martin Scorsese, a good family friend, attended to show support for her third season. Her fourth season – Fall 2010 – has already made it’s way through New York Fashion week with a strong presentation this past February.

Kim grew up riding English and competing for 10 years in hunters and jumpers and this is the main source of inspiration of her work, following along in the lines of other equestrian themed greats like HermèsGucci and Donghia Leather.

Kim had two horses forever until she sold them a few years ago, though she still tries to ride as often as she can and visits her mother’s ranch in Ojai, CA often for inspiration ~ in fact this is the site of where her spring 2010 lookbook was  shot (see photos below)!

The best selling item this season so far has been Kim’s Valmore cut out dress, which you can buy from Net-a-Porter online here. Kimberly Ovitz on Net-a-Porter

As a fellow L.A. native, we also asked Kim a few basics we ask all our fellow L.A. school alumni friends …

JOHN THOMAS DYE ELEMENTARY & BRENTWOOD SCHOOL ‘ 01

2. Favorite high school memory

ALL THE PHASES OF STYLE I WENT THROUGH FROM 7 TO 12 GRADE.

3. Favorite thing about growing up in L.A.

HAVING THE OCEAN, MOUNTAINS, AND DESSERT AT YOUR FINGER TIPS AND OF COURSE THE WEATHER.

4. Favorite place to have meetings in L.A.

BLUE PLATE

5. Favorite place to have dinner in L.A.

Notes from an Oscar Party ~ Thursday, March 4th ~ Larry Gagosian re-opens expanded gallery in Beverly Hills

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Here are some thoughts on Oscar week i’ve had tonight …

Slideshow:
Fullscreen:

My mom and I agreed the Gagosian opening was delightful, and rare to see such an ecclectic crowd in Los Angeles from the way up to the way down. We saw friends, celebrities and other party circuit regulars:

  • Gallery owner Larry Gagosian
  • Artist/photographer and honoree of the evening, Andreas Gursky
  • Academy Awards host & actor Steve Martin
  • Vanity Fair biographer Bob-Colacello
  • Prince Farhad-Farman-Farmanian
  • Puppies! Puppies! Puppies!! I love art! Where else can you bring dogs?! Not only did a disabled man come with a gorgeous golden retriever but there were also 2 or 3 girls holding little dogs
  • Caradoc and his sister Sonse, an art-dealer from Paris
  • Jeff Katzenberg (CEO of Dreamworks and court side seat holder at the Laker’s game is also hosting the The Night Before Party this year, known as “THE” party of the season, which benefits the Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation – which runs and pays for a retirement home in the valley for SAG actors who dont have the funds to retire properly)
  • Tracy Bjelland (SupperClub membership director) hobknobbing with director George Hickenlooper who has just wrapped production on a bio-pic on Jack Abramoff – an L.A. native and former lobbyist, currently incarcerated for defrauding American Indian tribes and corruption of public officials. The film stars Kevin Spacey as Jack Abramoff and is called Casino Jack (2010). The film also stars Kelly Preston and Jon Lovitz and is scheduled to come out later this year, close to coinciding date of Jack’s release – December 1, 2010.
  • Lauren Brokaw with friend Rachel Chapnik
  • Publicist Nicky Wyman
  • Stacey Bendet (deisnger for Alice+Olivia)
  • Sam Orlofsky - of the Gagosian gallery
  • Emily Smith AND Paula Froelich posing for pictures together!! (Emily was at New York Post and then took over Paula’s job at Page Six when Paula left last year to go freelance)
  • Designer Manuele Malenotti (designs for Belstaff)

  • Brian Grazer observed Andreas Gursky’s satellite arial photos of Earth with his wife and New York society grande dame Louise Grunwaldhis daughter Sage is also a photographer
  • Harvey Wesintein (hosting a company party for Weinstein Saturday at the SOHO house)
  • Designer Madga Berliner
  • Barbara Davis and grandson Brandon Davis
  • Fellow artists John Baldessari (conceptual artist) and Ed Ruscha (Pop art artist)
  • Elizabeth Von Gutman who works for the Advertising Agency: The Saturday Group
  • John Waters (director) chatting with Adrien Brody
  • Lisa Love (West Coast editor of Vogue) with an adorable little girl in a striped dress I am guessing was her daughter?
  • Rodarte’s Kate Mulleavy
  • Gela Nash-Taylor & John Taylor (Duran Duran) and the parents of little hipster and Cobrasnake muse Atlanta de Cadanet Taylor
  • L.A. native and famous author of many a L.A. tale – Bret Easton Ellis (Less than Zero, The Informers)
  • Former Dior Homme designer and photographer (and our Beverly Hills neighbor) Hedi Slimane
  • Benedikt & Lauren Taschen (of the Taschen book stores)
  • Diane von Furstenberg (starred at my wrap dress  no doubt trying to determine if it was hers) with Tatiana Von Furstenberg and Alexander von Furstenberg
  • VeraWang who last night hosted a dinner with Vogue for her new store opening on Melrose (Reese and Rene were there)
  • Jamie Tisch, Steve Tisch
  • Jared Najjar (owner of Prism gallery on Sunset) with friends Nes Saban,  PC Valmorbida (Austrailian artist and it boy who held an openeing at Jared’s gallery last fall) and Stavros Niarchos, Jr (whose father is the late Greek shipping tycon)
  • Michael & Eva Chow who hosted the after party/dinner at their restaurant Mr. Chow down the street on Camden Drive

The Gagosian gallery just finished a massive expansion and now has three major rooms, a deck on the roof and some smaller nooks and crannies. The architect is world famous Richard Meier (Getty, Museum of Televison and Radio). Tonight was not only the opening Larry Gagosian‘s new and improved space but also the opening of his newest exhibit featurng the work of German photographer Andreas Gursky, who holds the record for most expensive phototgraph ever sold at auction in 2007 for over 3 million dollars at Sotheby’s. The most famous of his photos are composites and colored-in collages of large scale scenes, including a drug store, the Chicago stock exchange and a Madonna concert! Other famous work are his series of aerial shoots of Earth designed to bring perspective to the viewer of space and distance. I saw the Beiring Straight and the Hawaiian islands in on of the satelitte photos where my grandmother and uncles lived – who were in major distress earlier this week with Tsunami warmings resulting from Chile’s earthquake.

Outside the party I noticed an obscene amount of white Audi clean diesel SUVs along side the usual throng of armored black SUVs. But there were a lot  more tonight due to their being no valet which confused me at first but then I thought how charming it was that people could then stroll down Camden Drive past Christies (wait for it – Christies is busy tonight hosting an auction and party with Vanity Fair and BMW for The Art of Elysium at Palihouse tonight) and past Teuscher to Mr. Chow (daughter China is an L.A. native) where the after party was held …

As were leaving, we literally fell on top of yet another Oscar party at Louis Vuitton on Rodeo, just one block east.

I got a bbm from mon amie at the Mayor’s house. She had spotted white clean diesel Audis reading TDI on the side too!! Did you see one too?! I then realized it’s a gi-normous marketing campaign – I love a good marketing campaign but always feel a little had if I dont hear it from a first-hand source and am duped by it on the street.

Down the street in Hancock park, lanes were closed heading East for four blocks in all directions of the mayor’s house on Irving, as he was hosting the ritiziest party of the eve …  My friend at Villagrigosa’s party – which was sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter and Bing – tells me there was a protest ensuing across the street on Irving – city workers – some laid off – protestes the lavish affair.

What do think? I can’t decide. At first I heard there was so much traffic control and loads of cops on bikes, and the tv news vans were camped out front and it all just seemed like too much. Mayor Bloomberg can do this without the scrutiny but I am not sure Villarogsa is quite at the point where he cant flutter around with celebrities and act like a socialite.

Theatrically speaking, it’s all very Gotham City/Bruce Wayne to have a Mayor who throws the best parties in town but politically speaking I give it a thumbs down.

Mayor Villaragosa told Ch 7 news he is supporting an industry that creates great income for the city. Protesters say it’s a slap in the face. Jeremy Renner (nominated for the Hurt Locker) who was there told Ch7 it’s a huge concern but so are all the people dying for our country and its all a matter of perspective.

*Jeremy Renner is currently a topic of interest for canoldeing with Jessica Simpson at Guy O’seary‘s house last night a party Guy hosted for the film, The Hurt Locker – which has nothing to do with the party he will house for Demi Moore and Madonna on Saturday night, 24 hours before the Academy Awards.

My little adorable friend Lauren and I bbm-ed about Art of Elysium at the Pali house, Dior at the Chateau, etc, etc. Deciding on Sushi we called it a night and came home to blog. Tomorrow we will be at QVC party at the Four Seasons which is actually going to air live on QVC at the same time! So tune in and maybe you can watch us try out Cindy Crawford face toner or the new brand to QVC, Lilly & Van apparel (Lilly is the god daughter of Lilly Pulitzer and Van is the grandson of Douglas Fairbanks Jr.)

Oscar week is a crazy phenomina when all sorts of cool, unusual things happen – like Susan Sarandon hosting a ping pong tournament (at the Mondrian) but by far the most hocking thing that happened today is former governor Sarah Palin and daughter Willow showing up at my childhood classmate, Melissa Lemer ‘s Silver Spoon gift suite and getting free earphones. Sarah Palin also appeared on Jay Leno March 3:

Other parties today?

  • 3rd Annual Women In Film Pre-Oscar Cocktail Party Private Residence
  • 3rd Annual Essence Black Women In Hollywood Luncheon

Other parties yesterday?

  • GLOBAL GREEN USA’s 7th Annual Pre-Oscar Party
  • Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences Presents An Evening with “Modern Family”
  • MANIFESTEQUALITY OPENING NIGHT PARTY

How could you not LOVE L.A.!? How?

Take the Tinsley Mortimer tour of New York Fashion Week

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Miss Tins has been busy this week in New York and we decided to take a stroll with her through Fashion week in honor of her upcoming show “High Society” which airs March 10th on the CW!!

First, a tad of history so we are all on the same page:

Tinsley Mortimer (née Tinsley Mercer) went to Lawrenceville Academy in New Jersey, a boarding school (where I applied and almost went, chose Putney instead and) where she met her future ex-husband, Robert Livingston “Topper” Mortimer. She went on to Columbia, Vogue, and  Harrison & Shriftman. He went on to Guggenheim Partner. She has a sister, Dabney Mercer, a capsule collection with Samantha Thavasa, and her own clothing line called Riccime by Tinsley Mortimer. She has also made two cameos on Gossip Girl. Tinsley was also a “beauty ambassador” for Christian Dior in 2007 - and designed a cute little line of Dior-by-Tinsley facial blotting papers. She developed a pilot for MTV in 2007,  which was not picked up and also hosted a fashion segment for Plum TV. This Spring we will see her in a reality show called “High Society”, which has just recently finished filming and will air March 10. She dated Constantine Maroulis for the show and ended their relationship as soon as filming finished. We noticed her up at Sundance this year with sister Dab, and faux beau Const, and then down at Super Bowl. Now, on to Fashion Week!

Friday, February 12th 2010: Tinsley hosts a kick-off party for fashion week at the W Hotel’s backstage lounge at Bryant Park. Samantha Thavasa, the Japanese accessory brand for which Tinsley designs a capsule collection gave out pink and black Fashion Week Survival gift bags. Included Items in the Samantha Thavasa survival kit were: Antibacterial hand tissues, Kleenex, Gum, Wisp toothbrushes, Bliss triple Oxygen face mask, and a gift certificate to the members-only shopping site Ru La La. She went on to attend the Charlotte Ronson, Adam, Herve Leger, Luca Luca, La Perla Ecco Domani, Malan Breton shows, the Alice & Olivia and Marchesa Fall 2010 presentations, a launch party for My Fashion Database and a special screening with Donna Karan for “Happy Tears.” On Thursday she will also walk in the Richie Rich show.

Is Paris Hilton the Dr. Dre of reality TV stars?

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Ever noticed that almost every reality star is FROM L.A.? You may not have noticed if you didn’t go to school with ten of them — but we did and we are here to take you on a deeper look at all the L.A. Natives from Beverly High, Crossroads (Spencer Pratt, Roxy Olin, Whitney Port), Buckley (Paris Hilton, Kim Stewart, Nichole Richie), and Malibu High (Brody Jenner, Chad Rogers) who have single-handedly created a world of reality shows between them and their friends – ALL STARTING WITH PARIS.

In 2004, when I was at The Lounge on a Thursday, or a Monday at Joseph’s (thank you Bolthouse), Paris would strut in with Kim Stewart, Nichole Richie, Caroline d’Amore, her sister Nicky Hilton, Kim Kardashian and possie. The paps out back Jen Rosero use to hold at bay with her giant fist would DIE over Paris coming out – cause she’s model tall and model thin and model pretty; add in a household name like Hilton and you have a celebrity in the making.

Enter Untitled Management – the “IT” Management company of the day who was sister companies with Maverick Films (Madonna) who was still in it’s infancy and later turned into Mark Morgan films (my old boss – love Mark) who is responsible for a little series called TWILIGHT. Jason Moore at Untiled Management was very looped in, very charismatic, all over town, knew everyone, etc and basically turned local celebrity Paris Hilton into household name.

Paris is like the Dr Dre of reality stars because for every person she makes famous, they make three people famous, and they make three people famous! Paris even has a mentor who brought her up (not really but) Jamie Johnson paved way for it to drool over “children of” on TV and was too ahead of his time, with his sort of weird, kind of amazing doc Born Rich (2003), about NY kids.

  • From Paris, The Simple Life was born and Nicole Richie got famous, from Nicole, Rachel Zoe (her stylist) got famous and got her own show The Rachel Zoe Project. Taylor Jacobson (Beverly Hills High), is Rachels assistant on “The Rachel Zoe Project.” Also, from Nicole Richie, the much loved Adam Goldstein aka DJ AM (RIP) got famous and was eventually given his own MTV show Gone Too Far which was aired after his death :(
  • From Paris, her mother Kathy Hilton got famous and was given her own realty show called I Want To Be a Hilton on NBC.
  • From Paris, her aunts Kim and Kyle Richards became recognizable to the casting directors of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills who immediately decided to build the cast around Kim and Kyle Richards. Kyle brought on her bff Lisa Vanderpump (love her!) and Lisa brought on Adrienne Maloof and Adrienne brought on Taylor and Camille.
  • From Paris, Kim Stewart got famous who is the daughter of Rod Stewart and older sister of Sean Stewart. Sean Stewart was cast on Celebrtiy Rehab which also featured L.A. native Seth Binzer (Crazytown and I think went to Beverly but I know for sure he was in CBS ;) his tag name was “Back”). He was later cast of Sons of Hollywood with Randy Spelling (John Thomas Dye) and David Weintraub, all LA Natives. Tori Spelling also landed a show with her husband Tori & Dean.
  • From Paris, Nicky Hilton got famous and from her, David Katzenberg (Harvard-Westlake) her bf got famous – watch for his new MTV show HARD TIMES.)
  • From Paris, Caroline d’Amore got famous and she had a little Miami show she hosted briefly but also got famous for being hot, being a hot Dj, and being – BY FAR – the sassiest girl on the catlwalk every year Smashbox had LA Fashion Week, and at every To Be Free show (when Spin Shoppe and The Alliance use to host), etc.
  • Simple Life paves the way for Filthy Rich cattle drive - Courtenay Semel and Kourtney Kardashian are cast.
  • From Paris, Kim Kardashian got famous because they use to go out a lo. Soon Keeping up with the Kardashians is born. Kim paves the way for her sisters to become stars and they branch out with Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami. Then Kim’s friends and sometimes publicists Jonathan Cheban and Simon Huck got the showThe Spin Crowd based on their company Command PR.
  • Keeping up with the Kardashians paves the way for Pretty Wild with Alexis Mieiers from (or maybe not) The Bling Ring (who robbed Orlando Bloom, etc.).
  • From Paris, Brody Jenner got famous. They use to hang out a lot and were friends from high school. Brody is Kim Kardashian’s step-brother and Spencer Pratt is his best from from Crossroads high school in Santa Monica. Spencer was sort of masterminded the entire Princes of Malibu show (remember that? re watch it – its good and very truthful about Malibu Colony). After the Princes of Malibu, Brody was seen on The Real OC all the time with his friends 3 promoter buddies Taylor Mosher (LA native, promoter and designer for ArchAngel and known as “Sleazy T” on The Hills), Ryan Cook (the adorable Canadian promoter with blonde curls, always on The Hills), and Frankie Delgado (who I love, also a promoter and a regular on The Hills). A little side not but Jared Najjar used to be the financier behind Brody and Spencer’s success and helped them start all start Archangel jewelry. Jared recently opened Prism gallery on Sunset and has a lot of support from modern art world royalty like Dasha Zhukova and PC Valbormida and even hosted the after for the annual MOCA gala during it’s first year. From The Hills, Lauren’s boss at People’s Revolution, Kelly Coutrone got her own spin -off show Kell on Earth.
  • From the Real OC, The Hills was born. Spencer Pratt was responsible for getting his friends from Crossroads (high school) in Los Angeles on the show - Whitney Port, who later brought on Roxy Olin and his sister Stephanie Pratt (Crossroads).
  • Then The Hills segways into The City and Whitney brings along bff Roxy Olin (also a Crossroads girl)- on which Olivia Palmero, already made famous by www.socialightrank.com (now defunct), becomes a reality star
  • The City with Olivia Palmero paves the way for High Socity with Tinsely Mortimer
  • LA / Malibu native Chad Rogers, a realtor at Paris Hilton’s dad’s company Hilton & Hyland and friend of Paris, gets a show -Million Dollar Listing - with two other realtors Josh Flagg and Madison Hildebrand - all of whom happen to also be LA Natives - coincidence? I think not!
  • Paris’ new show on Oxygen, ”The New Untitled Paris Hilton Project,” will feature her new gang of closest friends Brooke Mueller (Charlie Sheen’s ex), Jennifer Rovero (Hilton’s photographer, and former Playboy model and ex-girlfriend of Fred Durst) and fellow socialite Allison Melnick. Allison - party promoter, celebrity wrangler and bff to Paris – has had many cameos on reality shows already, including P Hil’s My New BFF.
