Kanon Vodka & Sophomore’s Chrissie Miller have a question to ask you … Truth or Dare!?

Last night, I went to go check out Kanon Organic Vodka, Chrissie Miller (founder of Sophmore) and her design partner Madeleine von Froomer (Proenza Schouler alum) new short film Truth or Dare which debuts their fall line of t-shirts, starring Chloe Sevigny, Chanel ambassador Jen Brill, writer Lesley Arfin, tattoo artist Scott Campbell and actor PJ Ransone and shot by Cass Bird; screened for the first time at Paul&Andre’s in L.A.

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the invite for this party for a few reasons:
1. Chrissie Miller in LA with Sophomore is very un LA, it is actually the opposite, being very NYC… We LOVE that!  The people mixed with the atmosphere was very LES in NYC, which I wish there was a lot more of. So far, P&A’s has def tried to bring a lil more of the NYC artsy/eclectic vibe to la, which especially worked at Olivier Zahm’s Purple Magazine Oscar Party, held here 3 weeks ago.

1.5 Chrissie is very creative, and has done the fashion film far before it was the cool new thing to do.  I love how she incorporates her style, the New York vibe, and her friends into a cool video, all while showcasing her line.
2. Kanon Vodka just can’t help but be involved with and bring the most chic and interesting crowd to their events… I keep having to remind myself that this is an alcohol company … Who are you guys?? *side note* Last Coachella, my friend Yvan (Facehunter) filmed the funniest/cutest/most amaze balls short video for his blog, during the Kanon Pool party and around the festival (If you know Yvan, this video is so quintessentially..HIM!)  Kanon really pays attention to what’s new and hot in all areas of fashion, music, photography, and lifestyle.  I could go on and on about the above mentioned, but for your sake, I think I’ll stop!

When I asked Chrissie why she decided to do something in LA, she said that since she just completed her short vid she thought LA, land of movies was the appropriate place to show it, and at her close friends new spot, Paul&Andre’s.  Normally the darkest spot in LA, Chrissie told us she had the lights turned up, so she could see who came to her partay; GOLD star on that one sister!

The deets:

Truth or Dare started at 10 P.M. sharp! The cast included included the ever so adorable Jen Brill (Chanel ambassador), Chloe Sevigny, Scott Campbell, Drea de Mateo, Shooter Jennings, Leslie Arfin, and other lovely New Yorkers.

Drinks? My fav drink of the night was the Kanon Krush, as seen above. I love Kanon drinks, as they use fresh ingredients such as fruit and herbs instead of unhealthy junk.

In true b-day spirit, I should be including silly photos of Adam and some of the crew from way back when (middle school, gasp), but I won’t. Not something I’d normally document, however, I thought important to highlight seeing so many family friends & LA natives for over ten/fifteen years, which you might call rare (There were a few friends that I had not seen in over 7 years)!!

THIS IS A HAPPENING! I consider a great LA night when a convergence of local talent is pooled to create a memorable shared experience; last night MOCA delivered … IN SPADES! After the red carpet and cocktail hour where I never quite made it into the exhibit titled ‘The Artist’s Museum’, organized by Rebecca Morse (then again, I didn’t make it to the exhibit last year as well….); guests proceeded into the tent that was erected in the middle of Grand Avenue downtown LA for the MOCA Winter Gala envisioned by artist Doug Aitken. Rachel Bilson, Chloe Sevigny, Mila Kunis, Elodie Bouchez, Kate Bostworth, Peter Marino, Kristen Dunst, Ginnifer Goodwin … flanked by their publicists and BFF’s at the Chanel table, Chanel fine jewelry being a sponsor for the evening; needless to say plenty of sprarkly bobbles and lace abounded at the longest table in the room.

And about that room … Mr. Aitken interactive aspirations for the evening carried over into the decor of the tent; the walls were painted in a geometric black /white pattern which gave the illusion that the walls were in fact three dimensional.

Also on the walls hung poster art contributed by Bruce Nauman, Raymond Pettibon, Alexis Smith, Laura Owens and several others. I loved the light sculptor that hung above us amidst ‘exposed’ white piping which was also patterned in geometry, designed by architect Barbara Bestor.

There was a bit of eating in between socializing among the many who’s who in the room … my favorite union I dubbed the Grey Table/ #51; not only for the fact that our former Governor Davis was at the helm, but his fellow table mates included Ed Ruscha, super star architect Frank Gehry and their respective partners-all silver haired!

Plenty of artists were in attendance and what a treat to be in their company … Jeff Koons, Roson Crow, Liza Lou, Mike Kelley, John Baldesarri and Catherine Opie - WOW!

Opening remarks by our lovely hostess Maria Bell were followed by new MOCA director Jeffrey Deitch (tho he did attend last year’s gala he was not yet ‘officially’ posted); who introduced performer Devendra Banhart, Beck and Caetano Veloso - who ever brought this talent together on the same stage is genius! They alone left us all swooning …

But wait folks there’s more!

Onto the live art work by Doug Aitken titled WE, which included: farm auctioneers, drummers, the LA Gospel Choir and my ‘ultimate cherry on the top’; a cattle whipper …

Strategically mapped throughout the room; we had pistol quick bidding by the auctioneers, thumping rhythm courtesy of the dozens of Tabla drummers, and chorus splendor by the Choir all in tandem requiring the audience to follow the performance in the fashion of a tennis match!

The grand finale was worth the wait for sure; but first I must share a childhood memory that accounts for my great enthusiasm for this particular piece … my cereal of choice growing up was Kellog’s Sugar Corn Pops (nutritious as there really is corn in the ingredients … ); at the time the box was dominated by a full length photo of a genuine American Cowboy in full gear; hat, jeans, chaps and rope … Sooo when the cattle whipper started his syncopated fire cracker snapping, I was done in … as were all for cheers and hoots followed!

The lack of an official after fete did not deter guests such as Cameron Silver (looking every bit the warrior in a Lesage vest under his dinner jacket), Rachel Zoe, Lisa Eisner, Shiva Rose (super hot in Mark Fast!), Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale from splintering off to Soho House …

Our lil posse opted for a stop @ the local liquor post and a pal’s cozy haven in Hancock Park where we warmed our toes fireside stretching out the evening and enjoying each other’s company …

Fendi launch party for their new store in the Beverly Center – Chloe Sevigny to host along with LACMA’s Avant Garde

LACMA has many councils, clubs and boards you can join but the Avant-Garde is of particular interest to us here at The Truffle. Set up as a feeder group for 20 and 30 year olds to move onto the Directors Circle, the Board of Trustees or the Acquisitions Committee one day, the Avant-Garde is treated by LACMA as the next generation of philathropy in Los Angeles.

I have been to a few Avant-Garde events including a tea and tour for the recent Renoir exhibit in the BCAM last spring on top of a a private party night before with LACMA’s President Circle and other major patrons of the arts.

This weekend the Avant-Garde is at it again and will be the cherry on top of Lynda & Stewart Resnick‘s immense Gala to open their new Resnick Pavilion that they single-handedly built with the help of architect Renzo Piano who also built the BCAM in ’08 and intended this addition to serve as the “Baby Piano” to the BCAM’s grand.

A cute L.A. tie-in you already know if you live in Beverly Hills is that Stewart & Lynda Resnick own POM Wonderful and grow pomegranates in their front yard orchard in Beverly Hills on Sunset Boulevard that can be seen from the street.

If you drive on 6th & Fairfax today – you will see preparations going on behind the tarped fences for the Gala this Saturday, orchestrated by LACMA event planner J. Ben Bourgeois, named the “Museum Gala Master” by LA Times. The Deliveries Only entrance of the museum is jammed with florists and caterers and 3 major tents can be seen from the street.

A long hallway tent connects the new Resnick Pavilion to the main Gala tent where Christina Aguilera will perform for event chairs Shelli Azoff, David Bohnett, Eva Chow, David Geffen, Wendy Goldberg, Bobby Kotick, Michael Milken, Jane Nathanson, Carole Bayer Sager, Terry Semel and Florence Sloan, and all their friends and the usual LACMA suspects who will attend including LACMA president Michael Govan and his wife Katherine Ross. Tickets to this dinner run $5000 to $10,000 a piece and there are still some left. I hear the Silver Tables are all sold out but there are other levels left if you feel the desire to get a last minute group together.

While the Gala is definitely the place to be this weekend, may I direct your attention to tent number 3 where the Avant-Garde will host the after party – with a performance by Abigail and Lily Chapin aka “the Chapin Sisters.”

The invitation for the after party reads like a Daily Truffle miracle with L.A. natives galore representing from Harvard-Westlake,  Crossroads, Brentwood, Buckley, Campbell Hall and Beverly.

Also slated to the host the after party are Lynda and Stewart Resnicks’ children – Jason Sinay, Ilene Resnick and Bill Resnick and their significant others.

A few other stand-outs on the after party host committee include super-model/designer Erin Wasson, Jason Bateman, Chloe Sevigny, Giovanni Ribisi, Band of Outsiders designer Scott Sternberg, and Australian artist PC Valmorbida. All names can be seen below on the invitation below.

Now, if you read Vogue – and you should – Andre Leon Talley wrote a magnificent piece in the September issue (2010) about the actual exhibitions (there are 3) which will be housed in the new pavilion:

• Olmec: Colossal Masterworks of Ancient Mexico
• Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail, 1700-1915

Obviously, fashion one was the one of interest to Andre; his tour was caught on tape, in which Vogue West Coast Editor Lisa Love comes by (her office is just down the street on Wilshire, also where I work!) – see their sneak peek at the items on display here: Vogue Magazine shoots Fashioning Fashion at LACMA.

Just a final quick note, one of the coolest things about this new one-story, 45,000 square foot addition is that is has all-natural light from vents and slats in the ceiling. This should make environmentalists happy but is also sure to be the envy of 5th Avenue apartments (or any large space where light is on the perimeter). All natural light is a designer’s dream, though quite a challenge for the curator who must consider changing light.

About the Chapin Sisters:

Abigail and Lily Chapin are singing, songwriting sisters who have been performing under the name The Chapin Sisters since 2004. They are knows for pristine harmonies and haunting melodies that have gained comparisons to sister acts of old and Appalachian family groups, yet their songs and arrangements have a very contemporary aspect, with elements of pop, blues and psychedelic rock. Their first full-length record Lake Bottom LP was a collaboration with their other sister, Jessica Craven, who is now taking a leave of absence to spend time with her new baby. Produced by Thom Monahan (Lily’s, Devendra Bandhart, Vetiver) and Mike Daily (Whiskeytown, Grace Potter), the record was critically acclaimed and was named one of LA Weekly’s Top Ten Records of 2008.

Abigail and Lily and co-producers Jesse Lee (Gang Gang Dance) and Louie Stephens (Rooney) retreated to an old family farm in rural New Jersey where they put together a studio and recorded Two. This record incorporates lush keyboards, layered percussion, electric guitars and warm, rich vocal tones, in addition to the staple acoustic guitar and three part-harmonies that the sisters are already known for. Two will be released in the US & Canada on September 14th via their own label, Lake Bottom Records (Thirty Tigers/
RED).

This year, The Chapin Sisters have been busy touring as part of She & Him’s band and opening many of their shows. They have also begun headlining their own club shows.

Ro-dar-te for Tar-jay

So, tomorrow is the day that Sabrina and I have been waiting for.  I’ve been anxiously checking the Target website every ten minutes, to see if they have uploaded the clothes for purchase.. It is 9:18 pm here so 12:18 a.m. NYC time, which means that it is December 20th, 2009. (My keyboard will be doing over time tonight, so tomorrow I shall give it a break.)

All of this hype and commotion started with…..

August 5th, 2009 Target announced that Rodarte would be there next designer for the Go International division.  Laura and Kate Mulleavy, Rodarte, have decided on 55 pieces which will include everything from high waist tights, holiday dresses, lacy cardigans, fax fur, to knee highs, belts, jean jackets, and much much more! The prices range from 10-80 $.

I hope they look like this tomorrow !

The collection incorporates a rich mix of patterns and fabrications and everything from sequins and bows to faux fur. The key with Rodarte is layering,” said Target spokesperson Joshua Thomas.

The most interesting aspect of this collection for me, is how they drew inspiration from the movies Rosemary’s Baby, Harold and Maude, and Bonnie and Clyde.  I have always been surprised why more designers haven’t taken inspiration from Mia Farrow or Ruth Gordon’s characters in Rosemary’s Baby.  I LOVE these movies and adore the designs in each film!  (I do not think this is the time or the place to discuss my love for Roman Polansky, Director of Rosemary’s Baby.)

Love her or hate her, random tween internet sensation Tavi Gevinson, had a part in this partnership: Being the muse for the collection, attending the official shoot, filming an interview with the Mulleavy sisters, and having a dedicated page in Teen Vogue, about the relationship between the threesome.

Kate and Laura are LA natives… kinda.. The girls are from Pasadena, Ca.  Kate was born February 11th, 1979, and Laura was born August 31st, 1980. Both girls received liberal arts degrees from the University of California, Berkely in 2001.  Laura and Kate went to New York in February of 2005, with 10 hand sewn pieces.  A few days after the sisters had been in New York, they were on the February 3rd, 2005 cover of Women’s Wear Daily. And as they say, the rest was history..

Chances are you have seen Rodarte on the cover of a major international publication, as it has graced the covers of over 20 !

To name just a few accolades and awards: June 2006 and 2007 led to nominations for CFDA Swarovski Emerging Womenswear Designer award.  In June of 2008, Rodarde was awarded the CFDA Swarovski Emerging Womenswear Designer award and this year, they were chosen to win the CFDA Womenswear designer of the Year.

I haven’t bought anything recently from these designer collaborations (thumbs down), but I have an amazing jacket from the Erin Fetherston Target line and a few things from the Luella Bartley collection that I heart.

The annoying thing about this situation is that it is supposed to come out everywhere on December 20th, 2009…. not come out everywhere but LA before the 20th.  According to Racked LA, the Rodarte for Target know it alls, the Target in Eaglerock, CA had received the whole shipment on December 8th and sold out. New York and San Francisco had Target to Go pop up shops last week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m, in which one could select a few pieces from the collection, and pick it up wrapped a few minutes later.

I just spoke with friend, fashion lover, and former friend from college, Megan Perez.  She just informed me that the collection arrived in Dallas yesterday, December 18th, 2009. Noooo faiirrrr !!!! I’m going to have a tantrum any minute, be lucky you don’t have to witness it.  Megan bought the leopard dress with the bows on the back and said that it fit well because she has an hour glass body and the skirts style is body con.  I have not seen or heard anyone talk about Rodarte making swimwear for this collab, but Megan told me that there are different styles, mostly boho chic.  Ms. Perez is going to go back for the mustard colored cardigan and a few accessories.

Why is it LA the last to receive this collection? Grrr.

Rodarte is available in LA at Opening Ceremony, Rodarte, Maxfields, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and elsewhere at Kirna Zabete, Jeffrey, Dover Street Market, Collette, Harvey Nichols, Ikram, Bergdorf Goodman, Holt Renfrew, 10 Corso Como, etc.

Rodarte for Target will be available (I hope sometime tonight) at Target.com

Soooo many of my favorite people: Stylists, editors, fashion designers, crushes, creative directors, models, musicians/bands, authors, royalty, and just straight cool people happen to be English. Not only should she be given an award for using bows all of the time and for having the cutest name ever, but she also deserves an award for her creativity, originality, and her mentality of being fearless and a bit kooky.

spring slash summer 2010 fashion show

Unlike other high end designer brands, the customer who wore Luella was all about looking fashion forward and having a good time.

I loved Luella’s collections because they they never copied slash followed any upcoming trends, yet they always felt so current and new.

Something about this brand always screamed I‘m cute, english, and I follow the beat of my own drum, which has made me an “it” girl.
