Director Guy Moshe looked to LA artist Jeremy Kenyon Lockyer Corbell to complete a series of artwork for the LA premiere party of his new martial arts / adventure film BUNRAKU. Instead of your usual premiere and rote after party, a unique approach was taken to translate the film into an artistic experience. And where better to host an art show than Room 64 of the Chateau Marmont, loosely called the Penthouse although more the observing guest will notice it is not on the top floor. 

FILM NOTES …

Demi Moore plays the sexy mistress of Ron Perlman whose character is the most powerful man east of the Atlantic sea in a world where bullets have been outlawed and the only legalized defense are your bare hands … Outlaws and samurais Woody Harrelson, Josh Hartnett and Gackt (who has a massive cult following) ban together to defeat the warloard. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Woody Harrelson in something like this (or at all for the matter) but it’s mindful of Natural Born Killers. The visually charged, colorized fight scenes, mercenary characters also remind us of QT’s Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill. “Bunraku” actually means  a traditional form of Japanese puppet theater, also incorporated in the film. The art produced by Jeremy, who also consulted on the choreography for the fight scenes, was inspired by the warrior-esque nature of the film. Jeremy has also consulted for I AM NUMBER 4 and UFC video games.

PARTY NOTES …

At the party … director Guy Moshe along with Josh Hartnett, Ron Perlman and Kevin McKidd from the film, Jeremy Corbell’s ever supportive and talented wife – artist Katrina Bea, Jonny Matlick from Svedka Vodka (a sponsor for the party) and his publicist Mandy Safenowitz of Shadow PR, Katrina Wan who was tapped to handle PR for the film, Andres Izquieta (one of Jeremy’s BFFs) from Five Four Clothing nnd his friend Angelo Sotira who owns DeviantArt. Pony sneakers were given to guests as they left the party. A room off the hallway was full of all styles and sizes where guests were stumbling over each other trying them on and deciding between the trademark white or black and some of the newer styles. Chateau food and beverage / events princess Casey was around as usual to make the party flowed smoothly, there was enough food, and the bar was full. Ian Rowan (pictured below) is our current favorite Chateau bar-keep; was kind of enough to make us something special (we can’t tell you the recipe but we can tell you that – if you see him there next time you go – he will make it for you if you ask for it by the name – “The Bartender”).

Cool chicks and festive tunes set the tone for the Alexa Chungfor Madewell Fall 2011 launch fete at the Chateau. Co hosted by InStyle; guests mingled poolside and got mani’s c/o fave air brush master. Art of Elysium and Lucky Brand brought down the house at Eveleigh on Sunset last night - the somewhat still new restaurant is perched across the street from Il Sole with stilts holding up the dining room like a treehouse. The HL Group packed the grassy front yard entrance and country farmhouse inside to fete the charity and denim maker. Inside we spied publicist RJ Rousso with Lindsay Albanese and Taylor Dane (DJ Mia Moretti and violinist Caitlin Moe played ‘Tell it to My Heart’ in her honor), Teymour Boutros-Ghali with Nic Bini who has designed some the Lucky Brand stores and a friend of Patrick Herning, VP of the HL Group who was tapped to run PR for the fete. Also spotted … Art of Elysium founder Jennifer Howell, Lucky Brand CEO Dave DeMattei, Joe Kapsch editor of the Hollywood Reporter’s website THR.com, Creative Director Patrick Wade & Style Director Karin Cole from Lucky Brand, David Blogett of the HL Group, Amy Smart, Modern Family star Sarah Hyland, and Bill McComb, the CEO of Liz Claiborne which owns Lucky. Adorable Lucky Brand jeans came in gift bags. Paparazzi swarmed outside waiting for indecent exits.

Maria Cornejo previewed her fall line for Supper Club members at Frederic Fekkai on Merlrose Place, just a few doors down from Zero + Maria Cornejo (Maria ‘s store). The salon is located on the second floor of their retail space, with a colonial style balcony; wood floors and uniformed maids add a chic touch. Supper Club members Tava Smiley, Sean Stone, Gol Moeini were recruited to model the clothes as a surprise to guests – they spent the day in hair and make-up at Frederic Fekkai for their ‘show.’

Artspace Warehouse x Hanna Cousins

Artspace Warehouse opened a new show tonight for LA artist Hanna Cousins whose artworks reflect the fusion of her Swedish-American upbringing. Hanna’s mother runs Sous next door to Artspace Warehouse owned and operated by Claudia Deutsch. Hanna brought along friends Vanessa Senning (LA native, Marlborough) and Jane Abzug; Hanna is also starting a clothing line.

Summit Entertainment hosted an early screening for the Seth Rogen/Joseph Gordon-Levitt flick ’50/50′ which opens this weekend. George Kotsiopoulos was tapped by Escada to present their fall/winter ’11 collection at the SLS Hotel last night too …  PS ARTS was the charity attached. Ink and Osaka restaurants both opened last night and this week respectively as well.

Why we love Carrera: Not only do they have fun parties at our favorite places – Chateau, Eveleigh, Sundance, etc. – they also have a brand history pedigree, and we do like a pedigree here at the Truffle. Carrera was originally linked to Porsche for racing glasses and also made ski goggles in their early days, which my parents use to buy by the boatload in Vail and Tahoe along with their Bogner ski suits and heated boots (remember those??).

These are my favorite pair of Carrera sunglasses which you can buy right now at Diavolina. Tres chic, no? Carrera makes their avitors in colored frames as well – white, black and (I espesh like the) red.

A big hit at the Carrera Escape party over the weekend were their cat eye frames. Theses are called  ’Butterfly’ cat eye sunglasses. Love them.

Remember when people use to say “let’s do lunch” … ? Well, I think tonight I heard the replacement phrase for that while at an after party for the Foundation Polo Challenge played today in Santa Barbara. The after party was held in Room 64 at the Chateau, more commonly known as the penthouse even though it’s not the top floor.  ON his way out, a friend I’d not seen in ages came flying by at the elevators, without stopping, grabbed me, kissed me, pointed his finger and said “I am SO calling you tomorrow” …

The party was hosted by the Duke of Argyll - the social ambassador for Royal Salute Whiskey who throws international glitzy after parties for the brand’s polo team – aptly called Team Royal Salut. Team Royal Salut won 5 to 3 on Saturday afternoon with the players comprised of Prince William who has been in town on a royal visit, Glen Holden Jr, Andy Busch of the Anheuser Busch family, and Santi Trotz. Prince William scored 4 out of the 5 goals that brought the team to victory which led to an on-going topic of conversation at the after party: “I wonder which teammate tossed the Gentleman’s Agreement to let Will get ALL the goals  …”

BAFTA aka the British Academy of Film and Television Arts planned this event to promote up-and-coming British talent in the industry. Prince William is president of BAFTA  and Nigel Lythgoe is the BAFTA Los Angeles Chairman. A couple of the BAFTA Brits to Watch showed up at the Chateau after party including Gugu Mbatha-Raw(“Larry Crowne”).

The next morning – Sunday, July 10, 2011 – Prince William and Kate were over at producer Steve Tisch‘ house for a reception to mark the launch of the US Patrons Circle of Tusk, an African wildlife conservation charity which strives to preserve Africa’s natural heritage and culture, of which Prince William has been Royal Patron since 2005. Tusk’s US donors, Reese Witherspoon, Catherine Keener, Disney CEO Bob Iger and his wife, LA Huff Post editor Willow Bay, Kristin Gore (daughter of Al Gore), Peter Morton & Linda Evangelista, asset manager Willy & Eileen Ma, Tusk CEO Charlie Mayhew MBE, TUSK USA Director Meredith Ogilvie-Thompson and President of Jaguar Land Rover Andy Goss. On the list … Charlotte Ronson (the designed of the JC Penney line “T Heart Ronson”) and her sister, DJ Samantha Ronson, and their friends including several LA natives: sisters Kidada Jones and Rashida Jones, sisters Nicky Hilton and Paris Hilton, Monet Mazur. For those of you not familiar with the above … Charlotte (a designer) and Samantha (a DJ) are twin sisters and daughters of writer/socialite Ann Dexter-Jones; their step-father is Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones. Kidada (a designer) and Rashida (an actor) are daughters of Quincy Jones and both attended the Buckley school in the valley. Paris and Nicky (daughters of realtor/socialites Rick & Kathy Hilton) also went to Buckley on and off and know the Jones through school and growing up in LA. Nicole Richie (daughter of Lionel Richie) also went to Buckley.

Charlotte started her line with JC Penney around the time collaboration between stores like Target and H&M were winding down their famous collaborations with major celebrities and brands like Isaac Mizrahi, Madonna, Lanvin and Viktor & Rolf. JC Penney picked up on the trend a bit late but chose wisely as Charlotte Ronson has mucho brand cache among the younger set.

PARTY #2 ….

Moving west last night … We at the Truffle dare not cross the 405 unless we are going to Vicente for dinner or the Malibu Colony. However last night we made a one-time detour to the Santa Monica Promenade.

On the list … MOCA’s director Jeffrey Deitch and Maurice Marciano, one of the four Marciano brothers who founded Guess, teamed up to host the re-opening of Guess’ flagship store and spread the hype about MOCA’s current exhibit Art in the Street.’ The Bumbys were also present, clad in their usual bandana-masks and hat. The Bumbys, for those who don’t know, are two a performance artists who make an honest and fair assessment of your appearance at parties by typing it out on an old Brother computer and giving you the card. They have been the latest fad at Hollywood parties in the last year.

Another party fad we’ve noticed at Hollywood parties is live graffiti art. Last night, Guess and MOCA hired street artist (and friend of the Truffle) Chase to conduct live graffiti art next to the red carpet in front of the party. On the inside, they also had an electronic graffiti board we also saw at the T-Mobile party in Beverly Hills earlier this year.

But back to MOCA, we covered the opening of Art in the Street at MOCA this spring and loved the exhibit – full of well known and obscure LA and non-LA street artist work. MOCA has been doing a series of promotional parties – though they feel anything but promotional. So far they have all been exclusive, cherry-picked crowds at sophisticated laid-back venues. Last month, MOCA and Jeffrey teamed up with LEVIS to screen a documentary film at SOHO House and host an after party a mile East at the notorious Levis showroom, located in a clandestine house on Sunset Blvd next door to the Château Marmont. Blink twice and you’ll miss it.

PARTY #3 … The final party of the eve was the premiere of True Blood – who by the way – throws pretty amazing parties. You can credit that to HBO who understand what it takes to please a pampered crowd.

On the list … Stephen Moyer and wife Anna Paquin, Alexander Skarsgard & girlfriend Kate Bosworth, Joe Manganiello with fiancée Audra Marie, Kristin Bauer van Straten, Ryan Kwanten, Perrey Reeves (on HBO’s “Entourage”), Amanda Seyfried (who was on HBO’s ”Big Love”) and more all gathered at the ArcLight Cinerama Dome. Afterwards there was a party that included palm-reading witches and plastic fangs for guests. The new season of “True Blood” premieres Sunday on HBO.

We’ve noticed a new trend in Hollywood this week … LA’s biggest museums are hosting back to back parties this week for retail store openings. Restoration Hardware teams with LACMA for their new store opening on Beverly Blvd. … Meanwhile on the other side of town MOCA is helping Guess re-open their new flagship store on 3rd Street Promendade, as part of their ‘Art in the Street’ exhibit. The Bumbys are expected to preform their usual honesty’s-the-best-policy routine …

Pilot news: Aaron Sorkin and John Krasinski team up with HBO for a Chateau Marmont miniseries based on the book, Life At the Marmont by the former co-owner of the establishment,  Raymond R. Sarlot and Fred Basten.

Bottle service: How hard is it to get a table around Hollywood these days? Well bottle prices or at least minimuns are on the rise. We at the Truffle don’t do bottle service but we sometimes hear from others what it takes to be granted access if you don’t know someone (who likes you). The bottom line is … you must add to the clubs bottom line. You can do that in a number of ways – our personal favorite is to make their club fun by dressing well and having a good time. That way it’s fun for others, you make the club look good, and the promoters & owners invite you back (yes, my friends, there is more to having an active social life than being hot). For others who have yet to master that art, we hear $450 is a new acceptable rate to charge for a single bottle at some places in Hollywood but that you can still find a $250 bottle rate at places outside that area like The Wilshire hotel in Westwood. If you want a table and you want to sit down at places like Beacher’s Madhouse, if you are a group of men … a 4 bottle minimum can be standard.

New Clubs: Happy Birthday to long time friend of the Truffle Jason Scoppa who had his birthday at newly opened “The Sayers Club,” which he opened in collaboration with Sam Nazarian of SBE last week. He is teaming up again with Alexi Yulish to handle Tuesdays, Friday and Saturdays – the same two who made Green Door and Bardot cool.

New Clubs: We hear Jeffrey Best (of Best Events) and JT Torregiani (formerly of Dolce Group) have a new club in Hollywood cooking for an August opening … more to come on that.

New Clubs: Redbury Hotel will open it’s upstairs bar this week (Thursday). Alexi Yulish, Jason Soppa and Walter Macredy (who was the former host at Chateau Marmont and then Palihouse) are teaming up on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Kills killed it for me twice this weekend, and as corny as it sounds, you KNOW it’s true! Deleon Tequila‘s 2nd Anniversary soiree is happening now in the lobby of Chateau Marmont (we LA folk normally just say Chateau). How cute being that their first anniversary party was also heldin LA at Chateau last year.

Deleon was started by Brent Hocking who is now the CEO; Harry Morton is an investor, hence why you see Deleon allllll over Pink Taco.

The annual DGA awards usually sets the tone for the Oscar best director each year. This year best feature director went to Tom Hooper for The King’s Speech . After the awards several guests  including Darren Aronofsky, Harvey Weinstein, Tom Hooper and Sofia Vergara went from the DGA’s straight to the Entertainmetn Weekly’s pre-SAG Awards Party (presented by L’Oreal) on the terrace of the Chateau Marmont for an intimate party – 300 guests – gathering with cocktails, food buffet and passed appetizers.

2011 InStyle Golden Globes Beauty Lounge

Welcome to the 2011 InStyle Golden Globes Beauty Lounge! Come one, come all (but only if your a celebrity) to be primped and pampered for all the pre-parties, post parties and red carpets!

One of my favorite Hollywood fixtures, Stefanie Keenan, was shooting the party. She use to be a staff photographer at Patrick McMullen photo agency and left a few years ago to start her own photo agency. She is the only photog I know that could double as a super model. Stephani is married, funny and always jokes about her right “camera arm” being twice as big as her left.

I hooked up with RJ Williams (the Eloise of the Four Seasons as he lives and works in the hotel) and Tracy Behr of Young Hollywood in the lobby and walked over to the lounge held on the north side of the hotel in the Palm Room.

I am now a huge fan of L’Oreal after visiting the lounge. They have new packaging that is super chic and new products with lots of thought! I was also impressed by their brand integration as they had several commercials playing during the Golden Globes ceremony to really nail it home. L’Oreal equals Hollywood. Got it!

A few other brands who got involved with sponsoring parties this year who made the most of their presence include InStyle, Audi, smartwater and Grey Goose. While InStyle sponsored this beauty lounge for celebs, they also got together with Warner Brothers to host a viewing party in the Beverly Hilton hotel so spill over from the awards show also held in the hotel would be close by next door. Audi did their usually transportation rounds chauffeuring celebs between functions and Grey Goose sponsored a bar in the E! News one-on-one room where celebrities go to be interviewed after they win a Globe. Grey Goose aired commercials during the ceremony and also sponsored CAA’s pre-party for the Globes at Soho House last Friday and the Critic’s Choice Awards after party the same night.

We often get a lot of flack when we post parties ahead of time … it’s our favorite thing to do but it causes a lot of PR firms, celebrity wranglers and other friends of ours here at the Truffle to get 500 extra calls checking to see if there is space left on their lists. We are always hesitant to do it, however, since our good friend Matt Donnelly – reporter extraordinaire, went and popped the cherry this morning on the L.A. Times with a full blown roster of fetes for the Golden Globes weekend (nice Matt, lol)  - we decided we could go ahead and do our usual party list as well.

We are most excited for the Access Hollywood Gift Lounge at the Sofitel tomorrow but other good parties include: In-Style Beauty Lounge, BAFTA‘s usual tea party and HBO‘s luxury lounge – all at the Four Seasons (this a step in the right direction for BAFTA who has always done their parties at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in the past which is kinda, eh. #renovateme). Weinstein‘s party is at Bar 210 (#RIPtradervics) in the Bev Hilton and the In Style/Warner Brothers Viewing Party, HBO’s after party, Fox and the NBC/Universal party are also in the hotel. The actual awards are held here in the hotel as well from 5pm to 8pm so these parties are super convenient. Other parties from Matt’s list include Paramount, W Magazine (on Friday at Chateau produced by Cara events hosted by W editor Stefano Tonchi) party and Art of Elysium / Vogue party (on Saturday).

Levi's model, dinner, Chiara, Jewel

Levi’s recently had a dinner in their L.A showroom to talk about their new Shape What’s to Come campaign and invited The Daily Truffle along with Treehugger, E! News, bloggers, stylsits and celebs to come. The showroom itself, located in a charming house just East of the Chateau on Sunset Blvd, and has gardens, a living room, an attic, bathrooms with bathtubs in each one and rugged all American Levi’s paraphernalia everywhere. Inside the party, we were seated next to a Roberta Cruger from Treehugger, Ashlan Gores from E! News, stylist Jessica Paster with her friend and client Jewel, executives from Levi’s and Chiara Clemente who was in from Italy to introduced a documentary commissioned by Levi’s which showcased 8 inspiring Gen Y women (selected from 50 entries) who have bucked the norm of doctor, lawyer, business person and used social media to build networks, customer bases and platforms for awareness of their work. Subjects featured include:

1. Katie Spotz (23, Ohio, who was recently named one of Glamour magazine’s women of the year) who rowed solo across the Atlantic Ocean, raising awareness and $100,000 to promote access to clean drinking water in developing countries.
2. Priya Lakhani (27, London), runs a forward thinking soup kitchen making one-meal-soups for homeless in India.
3. Emily Cummins (23, UK), has developed a step-by-step guild for a build-it-yourself powerless fridge for third world countries which is ‘powered’ by dirty water but keeps contents dry, hygienic and cool.
4. Ashley Rhodes-Courter (age 25, Crystal River, Fla.), who overcame an abusive childhood in foster care and is now a voice and advocate for the thousands of children in America’s foster care system today

Chiara’s sister Nina catered the affair with waitstaff clad in denim aprons and laptops set up around the garden featuring the latest from their new Shape What’s To Come campaign featuring “new millennia” icons who are making a difference such step-by-step instructions for a build it yourself powerless fridge and our co-host for the evening Katie Spotz who rowed across the Atlantic (for real). The Levi’s showroom is a charming little abode with a pitched roof and all the features of a home. Chiara is mid-way through post production on a documentary on all the ladies featured on the site and will premiere at the first ever TED women’s conference in December.”

Elle Fanning and Chateau Marmont star in Sofia Coppola’s new film “Somewhere”

No, that's not a castle, its LA's own Chateau Marmont.

This movie screams, “I’m too f%ck*g cool for school”.

Why you ask?

First off it’s a Sofia Coppola (honorary LA native) film, which guarantees amazing cinematography and original music/+ soundtrack.  (I happen to love her movies, but to those who don’t, at least you get the above mentioned) Sophia’s boyfriend head ups the one and only, Phoenix, which did the original music along with a brilliant song by Jullian Casablancas, lead singer of the Strokes (curbside listening service available below).

I also think the cast is pretty frecking cool…. Elle Fanning, Benicio Del Toro, Michelle Monoghan, singer C.C. Sheffield, Simone designer Katie Nehra, Coppola cousin and lead singer of Rooney, Robert Schwartzman (Winward 01), Taylor Locke (Crossroads), Sonja Kinski (Whatever happened to her? She used to be a girl about town) Laura Ramsey, and super model Erin Wasson, whom I loveee.

I am not a Stephen Dorff fan, but maybe this movie will change my mind, and the minds of others :-/

Let’s not forget that Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia’s dad, and brother, Roman Coppola, executive directed and produced this film.

SOMEWHERE WILL BE OUT IN THE US ON DECEMBER 22ND 2010, BUT if you happen to be in Italy in September, you better  go see it…. I will have my eyes on you !
