If you happen to be by the Soho House (in LA) this weekend, don’t be surprised by all the little pink ‘CC’s in everyone’s pictures up on the photo wall … for tonight Chanel took over the top floors of the members-only club to help celebrate the new book ‘Chanel: Her Life’ by Justine Picardie (a new Truffle fave) …A lovely talk between the author and Liz Goldwyn, whose grandfather Samuel Goldywn is discussed in the book for his friendship and early recognition of Chanel, was held in the Soho House screening room (avec some slides from the book) and was followed by a garden dinner on the roof with endless wine, champagne, burrata salads, paella, pizza and more. The regular ‘photo boudior’ in the Soho hallway was re-styled for the party with the brands’ trademark double ‘CC’s for guest pics (click thru slideshow above to see). Gift bags included a signed copy of the new book and a bottle of the house’s signature perfume, Chanel No. 5. Author Justine told the Truffle she’s been collecting notes and keeping journals in preparation of the book since 1998. ‘Chanel: Her Life‘ is a beautiful read marked with illustrations by Karl Lagerfeld.

This last week at Paris Fashion Week, Fall/Winter 2011 has definitely been one for the books !

• Where were you last Thursday? I was en route to get lunch with my bffer Sabrina and will always remember that day as the day I heard my god/hero, Balmain’s Christope Decarnin, left in office one day in January and never returned.  On the way to lunch I read that he was in a mental hospital, which i’m not going to lie devastated me ! I was probably not enjoyable to eat with (Sorry Sabrina!), as I was hooked to Twitter, reading tweets and opinions on why/how Christophe did not show up to his Balmain F/W 2011 show.  We later found out that dear Christophe had just been released from the hospital, most likely due to depression and exhaustion.

• Everyone has heard this by now: John Galliano was suspended, then fired for making racist anti-semite remarks on film.

Haider Ackerman

• All eyes on Haider Ackerman’s F/W 2011 collection, as Karl Lagerfeld has mentioned Ackerman as a possible replacement at Chanel in the future.

• Rumors about Hannah MacGibbon not staying for much longer at Chloe.. I hated her F/W 2011 collection, so I’m not mad at that rumor !

• Upon attending Miu Miu’s show today, there is talk that Hailee Steinfeld might be the new muse for Miucca !

• Givenchy head, Ricardo Tisci, god/hero, has been semi-confirmed to take over for Galliano at Dior, as quoted by Derek Blasberg (at Katy Perry’s concert in Paris). Mr. Elbaz, Mr. Wu, and Mr. Tisci were the top contenders for Galliano’s replacement.

Ricardo is synonymous to me with Givenchy, so this does upset me, but at the same time I hope he can shake things up at Dior with their RTW and accessories…. Get Dior out of their horrid clothing slump.

*Side Note* Ricardo is designing the cover for Jay Z and Kanye West’s album, as well as doing cover art for their single H.A.M.

This is all too much for me, someone give me a drink and take me shopping !

GET BETTER CHRISTOPHE, I LOVE YOUUU!

THIS IS A HAPPENING! I consider a great LA night when a convergence of local talent is pooled to create a memorable shared experience; last night MOCA delivered … IN SPADES! After the red carpet and cocktail hour where I never quite made it into the exhibit titled ‘The Artist’s Museum’, organized by Rebecca Morse (then again, I didn’t make it to the exhibit last year as well….); guests proceeded into the tent that was erected in the middle of Grand Avenue downtown LA for the MOCA Winter Gala envisioned by artist Doug Aitken. Rachel Bilson, Chloe Sevigny, Mila Kunis, Elodie Bouchez, Kate Bostworth, Peter Marino, Kristen Dunst, Ginnifer Goodwin … flanked by their publicists and BFF’s at the Chanel table, Chanel fine jewelry being a sponsor for the evening; needless to say plenty of sprarkly bobbles and lace abounded at the longest table in the room.

And about that room … Mr. Aitken interactive aspirations for the evening carried over into the decor of the tent; the walls were painted in a geometric black /white pattern which gave the illusion that the walls were in fact three dimensional.

Also on the walls hung poster art contributed by Bruce Nauman, Raymond Pettibon, Alexis Smith, Laura Owens and several others. I loved the light sculptor that hung above us amidst ‘exposed’ white piping which was also patterned in geometry, designed by architect Barbara Bestor.

There was a bit of eating in between socializing among the many who’s who in the room … my favorite union I dubbed the Grey Table/ #51; not only for the fact that our former Governor Davis was at the helm, but his fellow table mates included Ed Ruscha, super star architect Frank Gehry and their respective partners-all silver haired!

Plenty of artists were in attendance and what a treat to be in their company … Jeff Koons, Roson Crow, Liza Lou, Mike Kelley, John Baldesarri and Catherine Opie - WOW!

Opening remarks by our lovely hostess Maria Bell were followed by new MOCA director Jeffrey Deitch (tho he did attend last year’s gala he was not yet ‘officially’ posted); who introduced performer Devendra Banhart, Beck and Caetano Veloso - who ever brought this talent together on the same stage is genius! They alone left us all swooning …

But wait folks there’s more!

Onto the live art work by Doug Aitken titled WE, which included: farm auctioneers, drummers, the LA Gospel Choir and my ‘ultimate cherry on the top’; a cattle whipper …

Strategically mapped throughout the room; we had pistol quick bidding by the auctioneers, thumping rhythm courtesy of the dozens of Tabla drummers, and chorus splendor by the Choir all in tandem requiring the audience to follow the performance in the fashion of a tennis match!

The grand finale was worth the wait for sure; but first I must share a childhood memory that accounts for my great enthusiasm for this particular piece … my cereal of choice growing up was Kellog’s Sugar Corn Pops (nutritious as there really is corn in the ingredients … ); at the time the box was dominated by a full length photo of a genuine American Cowboy in full gear; hat, jeans, chaps and rope … Sooo when the cattle whipper started his syncopated fire cracker snapping, I was done in … as were all for cheers and hoots followed!

The lack of an official after fete did not deter guests such as Cameron Silver (looking every bit the warrior in a Lesage vest under his dinner jacket), Rachel Zoe, Lisa Eisner, Shiva Rose (super hot in Mark Fast!), Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale from splintering off to Soho House …

Our lil posse opted for a stop @ the local liquor post and a pal’s cozy haven in Hancock Park where we warmed our toes fireside stretching out the evening and enjoying each other’s company …

Brass knuckles have been influencing fashion. Designers from Karl Lagerfeld to Forever 21 have developed brass knuckle rings this season – an interesting way to combine fashion with rage. 

I myself decided to arm up for spring with a trip to F21 which cost me $3.80 for the ring, $3.00 for parking and $42.00 for take-out from the Luxe!

Van Cleef & Arpels has done a similar concept to the brass knuckle rings in the past where their rings wrap around one finger and then under and over another …

Fantastic Plastic? Miuccia Prada wanted her collection for Spring Summer 2010 to reflect a girl who would go from work to the beach. Overall, I enjoyed this collection because most pieces seemed very wearable and the silhouettes felt fresh. I thoroughly enjoyed the colors selected for this seasons designs because they were not your average spring slash summer colors. The colors chosen reminded me of the palette that Marni usually sticks to. I did not like the skirts or dresses at the end of the show with the dangling crystals. Maybe if they had been mixed into the show differently I would have liked them better.

This post is however not about the clothes, it is about the re- occurring theme of plastic, vinyl, and crystal accessories. What caught my attention about the accessories of this collection, was the repetition and cohesiveness of the designs. The shoes, sunglasses, and purses all fit together beautifully… Where there was a green pair of sunglasses, there was a crystal shoe with green accents waiting. Personally, I would never use a plastic purse of any style, unless MAYBE going to the beach. (I do not need the world to see what I am carrying around. My earliest memories of this style purse is from the workers on breaks outside Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdales. It is a rule for them that they must use purses where one can see all of the contents of the bag so one is no easily able to steal.) For runway use, I thought the purses were very cute and tied the whole look together of hip business gal goes to the beach. The only shoes that I really disliked were the half grandma half stripper clear shoes with the dangling crystals…I prefer to keep the chandelier pieces attached to the chandelier in the dining room ! Aesthetically, I thought it looked way tacky that you could see the velcro strips on each shoe, especially if you are going to be paying a hefty fee.

Chanel did a line very close to this a few seasons ago including all styles of handbags, shoes, jewelry, and sunglasses.

To clog or not to clog?

Love em or hate em, clogs will be the biggest shoe trend of this Spring/Summer  (like the gladiator hype of 2010) so says Mary-Kate Olsen, Alexa Chung, Rachel Bilson, Jennifer Garner, Michelle Williams, etc.

Whose fault is this you may or may not ask? Mainly Karl Lagerfeld, and the lovelies at Chanel for flooding the Chanel Sp/Su 2010 fashion show with these historic shoes.

From Camilla Skovgaard to Steve Madden and Chanel and Versace to Urban Outfitters, clogs have started to dominate most all stores…. Wether we like it or not!

The good, the bad, and the ugly:

You can virtually spend anywhere from $40-$700, depending on your budget.

Clogs can be very comfortable.

These shoes will not look good on just anyone or with anything.  Mostly everything looks good on models, hence why they are models….You could put a paper bag on my best friend, Sabrina, and it would look  Do not think that this applies to everyone !

Errrr, these shoes look pretty similar to crocs, but with wooden heels.

What do you think my dear truffler? Will you be wearing clogs this season?

Hmmm….Me you ask? I don’t think so… I think I will leave this for the indigenous Dutch people and the long legged beauties trotting along at Chanel.

I got an email from Liz Keene at Harrison & Shriftman last fall inviting me to a private sale for designer Kimberly Ovitz who was literally handing some of her best pieces for next to nothing, as designers often do when they have extra sizes and cuts that weren’t not sold to retail stores. The clothes = amazing! My friend bought a gorgeous white tube dress and we oooh and ahhhed over the layered fabrics on jackets, dresses and vests, and the dead-on cool, casual, comfy, perfectly L.A. attire on rack after rack.

Meet your Chanel Ambassadors !

What do these Museialite’s (muse+socialite….I have copyrighted this word so beware) say about being Beauty Ambassadors ?

Jen Brill said she basically sold her soul to Karl.  I wonder what future hubby Terry Richardson has to say about this!

Erm.. This is very hard for me, because as some of you know, Chanel is my #1 or #2 favorite design house in the entire world. I have been waiting months for this show, and was less than impressed. I am aware that these clothes took hours/ weeks to make, but they are lacking the overall “couture” look.

My mother told me if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. I do have a few nice things to say, so I will just stick with those

One of the most anticipated shows of the couture season is the Chanel Haute Couture show in Paris, France.

Karl’s inspiration didn’t come to Karl Lagerfeld in a vision or a dream, like usual —more of “an electronic flash in my head at five o’clock one morning. Silver and pastel,” he said. “It’s the first time in my whole career I’ve done a collection without black or navy. There’s not one gold button.”

I appreciate that Karl went “outside” his box, but I miss Chanel’s LBD!

I have seen half of these skirt-jacket suits many times before.

This show gave me an adult futuristic Sailor Moon // fancy baby doll vibe. Most of the garments look either really young, like something a school girl or a baby doll would wear long ago, or something a grandma might rock. The shoes, accessories, and tights, reminded me a lot of the futuristic nightclub, Liquid Silver, in the movie Tank Girl.

There were some looks that I really enjoyed, and hello, what more could I ask for than a bow in every girls hair !

Chanel now produces 6 shows per year.

Haute Couture = French for “high sewing” or “high dressmaking” refers to the creation of exclusive custom-fitted clothing. It is made to order for a specific customer, and it is usually made from high-quality, expensive fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finish, often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques.

Many top designer fashion houses, such as Chanel, use the word for some of their special collections. These collections are often not for sale or they are very difficult to purchase.

To earn the right to call itself a couture house and to use the term haute couture in its advertising and any other way, members of the Chambre syndicale de la haute couture must follow these rules:

• Design made-to-order for private clients, with one or more fittings.
• Have a workshop (atelier) in Paris that employs at least fifteen people full-time.
• Each season (i.e., twice a year), present a collection to the Paris press, comprising at least thirty-five runs/exits with outfits for both daytime wear and evening wear. – Wikipedia

When I was younger, I did not understand why design houses wanted to spend tons of money and time on a hand sewn gown that would just be sent down the runway for less than five minutes, and then put into the archives. The older I grew, the more I appreciated these shows and saw them as the true art form that they are.

Today, an estimated 200 women buy regularly from the Paris couture, where a Chanel suit takes 150 hours to make, requires three fittings, and, with a smattering of embroidery by the fabled Lesage, can edge toward a $100,000 price tag (elaborate evening gowns can soar beyond that figure). A best-selling Chanel suit may be ordered by ten or fifteen clients, though chez Lacroix, for instance, only one model of each evening dress is sold per country. Guiding them in their choices are the vendeuses, or salesladies, who, with their directrice de la couture, coordinate the client’s requirements with the fitter and her seamstresses to make them a reality. This relationship “is a question of trust,” says Dior’s ineffably chic directrice, Catherine Rivière. “You need to know her body,” adds Raffaele Ilardo, Dior’s head tailor. “She knows you know every fault and every quality. The show was at the Pavillion Cambon Capucines, a former bank on the ‘le’ rue Cambon. (These shots are of the Pavillion, but not on the day that Chanel used it.)

Guests included Claudia Schiffer, Kanye West and Amber Rose, Alexa Chung, blogger Tavi Gevinson, Charlotte Gainsberg, Clemence Posey, Anna Wintour, Hamish Bowles, and Caroline Siber.

“It” models: Anja Rubik, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Snejana Onopka, Lara Stone, Magdalena Frackowiak, Liu Wen, Siri Tollerod, Heidi Mount, Kasia Struss, Isabeli Fontana, Jenny Sinkaberg, Baptiste Giabiconi, and Freja Beha Erichsen.

Guests sat on what it looks like to be silver couches with rainbow colored CHANEL embelishments.
