“The sbe Brothers Carnival”

SBE launches winter carnival in the parking lot of Industry night club on La Cienega every Sunday from 2pm to 6pm, and then moves inside the club until 10pm, starting this weekend through February :)

We are told the carnival will feature games and rides and “freaks”. The club is still open for regular hours Sunday night and the parking lot will be cleared for the rest of the week for regular parking.

Follow up book to “Less Than Zero” available for pre-order now. L.A. Native author Bret Easton Ellis (Buckley ’82) penned new book “IMPERIAL BEDROOMS and also has a Gus Van Sant film, Showtime soap & T.V. series.

This “brat pack”-esque writer of the 80′s who encapsulated the rich, Los Angeles, vapid teenage dilemma so well in “Less Than Zero” is due in for a sequel. The follow up book  second follow up book, 25 years too late but oh well, the cover and synopsis have been revealed and is out June 2010 although is available for pre-order now.

“Imperial Bedrooms” synopsis Per Random House:

Twenty-five years have passed since the events chronicled in Less Than Zero, and Clay Easton, now a successful screenwriter, has returned from a brief stint in New York City to Los Angeles, where he’s helping to cast his newest movie, The Listeners. But the more things have changed, the more they stay the same, and Clay is soon drifting around in his familiar old circle. There’s his vulnerable former girlfriend, Blair, and her husband, Trent, now a high-powered agent but still a bisexual philanderer; and the parties they host at their Beverly Hills mansion are filled with Hollywood types of various levels of fame and fortune and power. There’s his childhood friend Julian, a recovering addict running an ultra-discreet, high-class escort service, and their old dealer Rip Millar, reconstructed and face-lifted nearly beyond recognition, who nowadays is involved in activities far more sinister than those of his notorious past.

But Clay has demons of his own, and they threaten to destroy him once he becomes involved with Rain Turner, a gorgeous, much younger actress whom he has promised a role in his movie, exploiting her as best he can until he grows emotionally attached. Before long he realizes she has mysterious connections to not only Julian and Rip but also Kelly Montrose, a producer whose gruesomely violent death is suddenly very much the talk of the town. And as Clay’s life spirals out of control, he is forced to plumb the dark recesses of his character and fully come to terms with his capacity for betrayal.

As bleak and stylish as the era-defining Less Than Zero, Imperial Bedrooms will be the book of the season for Bret’s devoted fans and should also win him a whole new generation of readers.

The Canyons (TV)

Bret’s ‘dark soap opera’ project has been picked up by Showtime. Pere www.thisisnotanexit:

Showtime announced that they’ve picked up a project called The Canyons – a dark soap opera type show developed by Bret Easton Ellis. The pay cable network has ordered a script for the project, about a group twenty- and thirtysomethings in Los Angeles. It centers on a 29-year-old magazine editor who escapes his hard-partying New York life by following his best friend and a new girlfriend across the country, only to find himself virtually isolated when his friend is killed in a mysterious accident.

The six main characters – including an art gallery owner, lawyer, event planner and a closeted bartender – deal with career and relationship issues. They encounter violent situations and anxieties that are briefly manifested as monsters and other apparitions that may or may not be real.

Ellis said he developed the idea during one of his “dark periods” living in a Los Angeles hotel while looking for a home. “I had a feeling that the world was coming to an end, which I still think it is, and was making fear-based decisions, which were getting me into worse situations. I wanted to write a soap based on fear and anxiety in L.A.”

After having problems developing the script, Ellis brought in former GQ editor Dave Kalstein, who worked with him on an action drama that networks were hesitant about developing.

“It’s very much like Michael Mann’s L.A.,” Kalstein said of the project, adding that the title is not only a reference to Los Angeles but also a “metaphor for the chasm people have in relating to each other.”

Dave Kalstein attended Buckley with Bret and has written a book called “Prodigy” that is a futuristic tale of prep school breeding and the best “developmental drugs” money can buy.
