We thought we’d give our Trufflers a run-down of the 75+ year old relationship between the Giants and another team …

So the story goes — Steelers owner Art Rooney and Giants owner Tim Mara bonded over a string of bets at the racetracks back in the 1930s — the bets were so successful for Art that he named his son after Tim Mara.

Two generations later, Tim Mara’a grandson Chris Mara would marry Art Rooney’s granddaughter, Kathleen and they would go on to have 4 children — Conor, Daniel, Kate and Patricia — Patricia would later changed her name and become known as Rooney Mara, or the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Patricia Rooney Mara aka Rooney Mara is currently nominated for a Best Actress Oscar and is the love child of two of the biggest football families in America’s history. This is what we would call Football Royalty …

THE STEELERS (ROONEY) v THE GIANTS (MARA)

While Art Rooney founded the Steelers in 1933 when the N.F.L. was still developing, Tim Mara purchased the Giants franchise for $500 in 1925.

The Giants became a successful team while Art Rooney took the Steelers through 40 loosing seasons between the 1930s and 1970s before they finally won three Super Bowls in five years in ’76, ’79 and ’80.

The Rooneys are the first family of Pittsburgh; the way the Kennedys are the first family to Boston. The five children of the Steelers football dynasty had to debate (and fight a little) over ownership of the Steelers — eldest son Dan ultimately got control and passed along the team to his son Art Rooney II who is the current President of the Steelers; Dan is currently the Chairman and the US Ambassador to Ireland under the appointment of Obama.

Art Rooney, Jr. was the director of player personnel at one point.

Art Rooney, Sr. also held some other family business which went on to the other children — one of them being Yonkers Raceway which his son Tim (the one named after Tim Mara) now owns and operates. Pat and John ended up working primarily in other family business.

Collectively the family owns 80% between all the members while the other 20% was bought in an agreement by their relatives, the McGinley family.

John Mara, Rooney’s uncle and eldest grandson of Tim Mara (and eldest son of Wellington) is the current co-owner & president of the Giants.

Rooney’s mom is named Kathleen McNulty Rooney, just like her grandmother (Art Rooney’, Sr.’s wife. She married Tim Mara, Sr.‘s grandson — Chris Mara. Their children are: Connor, Daniel, Kate and Patricia.

Older sister Kate Mara, who has appeared in 127 Hours with James Franco and other films, had a pre-Super Bowl guest role this weekend on Royal Pains.

Patricia Rooney Mara – named for both sides of her football family legacies — shortened her name to Rooney Mara after her acting career kicked off.

Rooney, in addition to being an actress, has an active foundation she started in Kenya.

Pomellato struck publicity gold when they joined forces with We Need to Talk About Kevin star, Tilda Swinton. The cutting edge fashion icon has been making the rounds on the awards season party circuit, and also all the talk shows … andddd countless premieres and screenings for her film — and she’s been spotted topped off with Pomellato jewels every step of the way! A grand move also to those in the fashion universe who have come to see Tilda as a fashion leader. Though not nominated for an Oscar, up until the January 24th Oscar nominations announcement, she was a serious contender and still she has had enough face time in the press to make her a household name. Her recent walk on the SAG red carpets for Sunday’s show at the Shrine, where she wore a white Lanvin dress with a Pomellato ‘Tango’ brown topaz ring, came back to back with Monday night’s Pomellato grand opening on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

Whilst at dinner last night we were told this so called “Persian Jersey Shore” was done taping and is set to air under the name “Shahs of Sunset” on Bravo. No date known as of now. For our readers living out of L.A., Sunset refers to Sunset Blvd in Beverly Hills where many mansions have been built, torn down and re-built with the notorious ‘Persian mansions’ … In one case, a house belonging to a royal Persian family on Sunset burned to the ground — much speculation circulated over the cause of the fire.

This show probably would have been better in the 80s but whatever, for us in Beverly Hills — this is amazing. For some background on the Persian community in Beverly Hills, we refer you to this 2009 W magazine article which includes many friends of the Truffle.

Update: January 23, 2012 :: Bravo just released info about the show so we have added it for you here … Cast members include: Golnesa “GG” Gharachedaghi (29, Persian princess), Mike Shouhed (33, real estate agents recovering from the financial crisis), Sammy Younai (35, real estate developer), Asa Soltan Rahmati (35, singer), Reza Farahan (38, gay real estate agent), Mercedes “MJ” Javid (30-ish, party girl real estate agent).

Although there were many points of interest at this year’s Sundance, the most fascinating and moving element was hands-down the new Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) produced documentary about the West Memphis Three which is directed by Amy Berg (who won an Oscar for her preist-molestation film Deliver Us from Evil in 2006) and is titled: West of Memphis. Moreover, the biggest star of Sundance, and biggest shock was one of the West Memphis Three, Damien Echols, who came along with Peter Jackson and several of the parents of the murdered boys that led to his possibly false imprisonment and death sentence in the 90s. Damien was joined in Sundance with his wife whom he met and married while on death row. The doc is aptly timed with the release of the West Memphis Three from prison this past August although it’s been in the works for ages. Peter was also with his wife who co-produced the film- the couple has been providing financial and public support for the defense since seeing Joe Berlinger’s 1996 documentary Paradise Lost for HBO about the case. The situation is only going to get bigger and bigger, as Berlinger’s follow up in a series of three HBO documentaries, “Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory,” was just nominated for an Oscar yesterday.

UPDATE (February 1, 2012): Deadline Hollywood is reporting Colin Firth has signed on to join Reese Witherspoon to co-star in Devil’s Knot, based on investigative reporter Mara Leveritt’s 2003 book Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, to be directed by Atom Egoyan (The Exorcism Of Emily Rose). Colin will play private investigator Ron Lax who offered his services for free to the defendents in 1993 and who helped find the DNA in the knots that bound one of the victims that cast suspicion on the stepfather of one of the 8-year old murdered boys. Filming begins next summer in Louisiana, and other big names are expected to join the cast in smaller roles.

Joe Berlinger‘s first two docs about the WMT were Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (1996) and Paradise Lost 2: Revelations (2000). Both investigate publicly known details of the court case that has caused most of the world to conclude the trial was unfair, the Arkansas legal system doesn’t work and three innocent men went to jail while a guilty man is still unaccounted for.

Joe Berlinger is also the executive producer for for last 5 seasons of ICONOCLASTS (2006-2010) one of my favorite shows which places massively famous people in a two way interview. Over the weekend, our friends who were running the GREY GOOSE sponsored Blue Door on Main Street, home to several premiere post-dinners and after parties including Arbitrage (Richard Gere), For a Good Time Call (Seth Rogan), Celeste & Jesse (Rashida Jones), and more, hosted a party and discussion panel for ICONOCLASTS where they also announced the green light of season six.

For A Good Time, Call … premiered at the Eccles Theater in Park City earlier on Sunday night. Per Deadline.com, Focus Features just acquired Jamie’s feature debut, ‘For A Good Time Call’, for a little over $2 million. We took note of the cocktail napkins being passed around which were branded for the film and looked into it — turns out it was not the work of some marketing firm but instead was the director of the film who made them and even hooked up a rather lude voicemail from “Katie & Lauren” (named for film writers: Lauren Miller and Katie Anne Naylon) on the end of the 855 number which still works despite having too many digits.

Major drama report: E! Online reports: Tracy Morgan Hospitalized at Sundance – The former Saturday Night Live star was being honored at the Creative Coalition Spotlight Awards. According to the Hollywood Reporter and TMZ, the 43-year-old funnyman was escorted outside after giving his speech. At that point, Morgan collapsed. An ambulance was dispatched to the scene and Morgan was brought to Park City Medical Center. The comic is a diabetic and received a kidney transplant two years ago. Morgan’s film Predisposed, which also stars Jesse Eisenberg and Melissa Leo, is being screened at the festival. Morgan’s rep could not immediately be reached for comment. Story developing…

@THR — “He is with his fiance and grateful to the Park City Medical Center for their care. Any reports of Tracy consuming alcohol are 100% false,” added Morgan’s rep. Morgan, who received a kidney transplant two years ago, stars in the film Predisposed, which is screening at the Sundance Film Festival. The Creative Coalition is a non-profit charity for the arts and entertainment community. The Spotlight Initiative Awards have been given out since 1995 and “celebrate the art and craft of independent filmmaking, and honor those who leverage the platform of the silver screen to make a difference in the world.” The other recipients this year included actress Kate Bosworth, actor and artist Common, actressAnnaLynne McCord and filmmaker Stacy Peralta.

6:30PM at the Eccles theatre: Arbitrage premiere and after party at GREY GOOSE Blue Door … Friend of a friend of the Truffle Nick Jarecki wrote and directed this film starring Richard Gere, Tim Roth, Susan Sarandon, and one-to-watch Brit Marling.

A few of our friends were spotted at the Playboy x Bombay Sapphire party at the Blue Iguana. The Imaginative Filmmakers Spotlight dinner short film presentation (winner: Andy Nguyen). Event host Anthony Mackie was joined by guests including: Nia Vardalos, Scott Wolf, David Burtka, Edward James Olmos, Tiffany Hines, Questlove, Marshall Lewy (Writer, Director California Solo), and Sheldon Candis (Writer, Director Luv).

Also, the talk of the town regarding the Arbitrage premiere seems to have been surrounding Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter who was cast in the movie by director friend Nicholas Jarecki. Surprisingly, his two scenes actually amounted to a substantial role, which he did a fine job of. The movie, starring Richard Gere who turned up to the after party casual dressed with his wife Carey Lowell, is for sale. Gere and Lowell chilled in the VIP lounge after arriving with Jarecki. Other guests included Laetitia Cast, Brit Marling and Jamie Johnson.

Point of interest: There are 27 bars on Main Street. Most have been there since the 1800s when Park City was a silver mining town. The mines have since been sealed shut as they were dug too deep and flooded and shut down and later sealed off to prevent teenagers from partying and getting lost inside.

In honor of Jason London’s hosting this week, @mcguins and @mattbilinsky selected Jason’s 1993 classic Dazed & Confused as the Sunday movie of choice. DT: How and when was #SMTA conceived?

McG: One night @mattbilinsky essentially proposed to Twitter that he was bored and threatened to “live tweet” Lethal Weapon 2. At the encouragement of @mcguins and @charliebro, both of whom got in on the Leo Getz joke action, he did just that.

It was hilarious and I hit him up on Twitter proposing that we make this a regular thing, starting with Lethal Weapon. I picked a name and time and we got a half dozen friends on board and the rest was history.

DT: What has the general response been from the Twitterverse and from your followers?

McG: Well, we have had some unfunny followers unfollow, because it does clog peoples timelines. However, we’ve also gained cool followers who are awesome.

Things have just consistently been building. After a successful first week, where many randoms joined in, we proposed the next week we do Karate Kid. Bilinsky tweeted that all we needed was for @williamzabka [Willliam Zabka played Johnny from the Cobra Kai's in the original Karate Kid] to join. This was big, as Zabka, who played Johnny of ”BRING EM HOME IN A BODYBAG, JOHNNY” fame from Cobra Kai started following Matt and I. We stalked him and over a convincing DM thread, I got him to commit to joining us the next week. The best part (you can see a screenshot of the convo on my facebook) is that Zabka said we could pencil him in but he has bowling Sunday nights. Zabka brought 2 other members of Cobra Kai (2 dudes in the actual movie) and @tedstryker from KROQ (our biggest fan) joined with Chris Kluwe who is the Minnesota Vikings kicker. Randomly @mrbelding from Saved by the Bell showed up, at which point I tweeted “Whoever bought @mrbelding the $100 Dimples gift certificate to get him here, I owe you $50!,” which he ignored. So now we have weirdo KK fanatics, Saved by the Bell fans and a large contingent of Vikings fans, what the hell? Ha

DT: Explain this Mission Impossible photo we found on your Facebook page?

McG: Stone Rokk and I we were at an early imax screening of Mission Impossible and wanted to #smta it because it was the day after we did Top Gun, but there were no phones allowed in theatre as the movie had not yet been released.

DT: What films have you #smta-ed?

McG: Well, last week it was Dazed and Confused but going back to the beginning … Lethal Weapon was week 1, Karate Kid was week 2, and Top Gun was week 3 … for that one, about 8 of us met in my living room. The funny thing is that most all of these people (including Bilinsky) were merely acquaintances of mine. The hilarious ones that rose to the top of the funny list, I now like. So here I am with 8 virtual strangers in my living room that I met on the internet: awesome.

Could this get any weirder? Yes.

Someone walked into my house and I looked up and it was…Chaz Bono?! Wtf? Ha. [David] Arquette showed up unannounced and brought his pal Chaz.

Now this is hilarious on many levels, but we were at a comedic impasse for a minute, as EVERY Top Gun joke, at it’s core, is a gay joke. We just went with it. Chaz was a great sport, and David brought some gooood jokes. Nothing malicious, of course, all just tongue in cheek. So now we have a DWTS fan base? This is so random.

In three weeks, our joke twitter party that two acquaintances thought of and organized on the internet, is going viral. The goal is to get it trending.

DT: If you could have any actor actress or celeb join in, who would it be and why?

McG: For the actor/actress question, the more obscure the better. The movies are old classics that are as bad as they are awesome for the most part. To me, getting Damone from Fast Times (we are working on this) is as good as getting Sean Penn. Think of who you see walking down the street and freak out on. For me, it usually isn’t someone successful, but rather someone obscure and awesome. I would probably get a little weepy if Anthony Michael Hall joined. That’s my guy.

The number one commentator we want is Brett Easton Ellis, who just kills it with his tangential thoughts on Twitter. We will get him.

I used to not understand Twitter and found it pointless and annoying most of the time, but I have to say, I really enjoy it now. It is so funny because the nation sends virtual fan mail to people and a lot of the time, they see it. For a good time, search a person of note’s name, people say the crazzziest shit to them.  It’s a trip, the Zabka thing really showed me the power of the pen internet cold-call, and it can be used for way bigger gets.

This whole thing really shows the beauty of social media. It can honestly be used to break down the barrier between celebs and their fans – allowing a deeper and more personalized view of content and culture. That is a huge part of what we’re trying to do with this. Its a great way for people to discover new and more personalized info about things they love (in this case, old films).

DT: To fill the rest of the world in on your genius sense of humor, explain to our readers what other social media antics you are involved with … for example explain Michael Bolton and photo bombing.

McG: I do this stupid thing with @stonerokk, my good friend who is hilarious, a key member of #SMTA, whose name is also Michael [Michael Stone aka DJ Stone Rokk]. Whenever we see each other in a goofy tone, we say “hiii miiichael.” So one time I did this on Twitter and looped in @michaelbolton, saying “hi michaels!!” We got this nerdy response saying, “I think you mean the other Michael Bolton, try @mbsings” HA! This guy is done for. So we started lighting up “the other Michael Bolton,” who has the most esoteric nerdy tech programming computer tweets ever, but refuses to use another twitter name, telling him how great he was in Office Space, etc. He got pissed and begged us to leave him alone- like he isn’t asking for it with that Twitter name. So we went harder.

Long story short: he blocked us. So Stone and I started a campaign getting everyone on Twitter to tell @micahelbolton what big fans they are, etc. One Wednesday, I made it his birthday, because why not? And everyone started hitting him up, etc. The best get was @americanair, who @stonerokk and I have a special relationship with, who told its 350k followers to tell @michaelbolton how much they loved him. This guy must be so pissed.

The photo bomb is newly popular, but when you are 6’7 and leave the country a lot, this is one of the things you do best. I attempted to get both the Black Student Union and the Asian Alliance yearbook photos at my high school, but got cut out by the editor. The trick is my height. Anyone can walk behind someone taking the photo and make a face, but it is usually more obvious or obstructed. I have the benefit of being a foot above most people with cat like photo bomb reflexes and can do it with a fluidity like the world has not known. The thing is that I have been doing it for over a decade, but I seldom see the results.

Little families in Tokyo, behind the guy on the rickshaw in rural China, behind the local tribesman in Africa while learning about malaria. The best find ever was when I got tagged on Facebook by some random, months after the Super Bowl, and some girl wrote, “here is me and X and Evander Holyfield at the Super Bowl with some creepy leprechaun behind us.”

So some guy who knew my name saw this and tagged me in it – Epic.

The thing about the photo bomb is that I see maybe 10% of them, you have to do it for the love of the process.

Just the thought that in 20 years some Asian family may notice me peaking over them for the first time makes me all tingly, knowing my legacy is forever.

A key component of the photo bomb is the sleeping celebrity.  Rev Al Sharpton and Danny Bonnaduce- neither stood a chance. I’m like Freddy Krueger, once they are asleep- it’s a fucking wrap. Even Quentin Tarentino isn’t impervious to the McG photo bomb, watch out … Though one of my favorites really is the APB [African Photo Bomb] though.

A Braid Bar in WeHo ?! Gittt out … Why is this so hard? The service takes 15 minutes, costs $25 ($40 with shampoo) and there are a million different braids to pick from. Our friends at BMF Media, Domain and LFB Media Group banned together to bring celebs, influencers and press to the Wella Beauty Bar pop up lounge at NINE | ZERO | ONE salon — a permanent salon located in a castle-esque building off Santa Monica Blvd in what was once a library in L.A.’s early days.

The braid bar is a permanent amenity at the salon, but temporary sponsors also came in for the two day event such as Fake Bake tanning, shelves full of Schick Quattro for Women and Bio-Oil (known to prevent scarring if you apply the cream at the time of the scratch), a photo booth, UV Vodka (and UV Vodka cupcakes) and catering from the Little Door Next Door. We also noticed a major sponsor was the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau which is kind of amazing, no? We just heard they are sponsoring some things in Sundance as well which begins this Thursday, January 19th. Another sponsor of note was Teleflora, owned by Lynda & Stewart Resnick, who built the new wing at LACMA last year — aptly named the Resnick Pavillion. (They also literally have an orchard at their Sunset Blvd home in Beverly Hills (specifically a pomegranate orchard which is semi in relation to their other company POM which makes pomegranate juice — we put a picture of their house down below)).
