Tales from Will & Kate’s Polo Match & After Party at Chateau Marmont

Remember when people use to say “let’s do lunch” … ? Well, I think tonight I heard the replacement phrase for that while at an after party for the Foundation Polo Challenge played today in Santa Barbara. The after party was held in Room 64 at the Chateau, more commonly known as the penthouse even though it’s not the top floor.  ON his way out, a friend I’d not seen in ages came flying by at the elevators, without stopping, grabbed me, kissed me, pointed his finger and said “I am SO calling you tomorrow” …

Sundays are better spent playing polo, and by playing I mean watching. Unless you are Tamsin Lonsdale or  Ebe Sievwright (pictured above) … in which case you are part of the action. Tamsin has been bringing groups of friends out to the California Polo Club on Sundays to take lessons and watch her friend and fellow brit Ebe Sievwright play with his teammates. Yesterday, we went to join them and took some pics.

Lotus Cars Massive Brand Relaunch Steals the L.A. Auto Show

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Slideshow:
Fullscreen:

The history of Lotus Cars is quite a fabled one. Founded in 1952 by British engineer Colin Chapman, it is arguably one of the most famous names in Formula One racing, having been the chariot for the likes of Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Emerson Fittipaldi, Mario Andretti and Ayrton Senna. They have been an active competitor in F1 for 36 years (1958-1994) with 7 constructor champion titles. Lotus’ racing pedigree in F1 is rivaled only by Ferrari, who started racing just a few years earlier. Incidentally, Lotus finally returned to F1 this year after a long hiatus.

Lotus has also been very influential as a consultancy and technology development company for the automotive industry. They were involved with designing the DeLorean DMC-12 (the car from the Back to the Future series), providing suspension design for several manufacturers (remember those “Handling by Lotus” emblems on Isuzus?), and powertrain development (Ecotec engine) for GM. They also provide the chassis and about 40 percent of the components in the Tesla Roadster!

After being owned by GM and the former owner of Bugatti, since 1996 Lotus has been controlled by Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd, also known as Proton, a Malaysian car company.

Most of us know or think of Lotus from a single model, the Esprit, which was produced in several iterations between 1976 to 2004. The body was originally penned by renowned Italian automotive designer Giorgetto Giugiaro with engines ranging from an underpowered 4 cylinder to a turbocharged V8 in its final version. Most of us remember the Esprit from Pretty Woman as well as Basic Instinct, The Rookie, Taking Care of Business and of course, it’s debut in The Spy Who Loved Me. This car was the subject of many posters hanging on the walls of young boys all across the world, who dreamed of owning the British alternative to a Ferrari or Lamborghini.

Ever since the slow demise of the Esprit for the US market in 2003 in the face of tightening US government regulations, Lotus then became a niche manufacturer with the introduction of the super compact sports car the Elise for the US market in 2005, followed by the Exige. These cars were very light, agile, and relatively reliable since they were using Toyota engines. At a price of around $50,000, the Elise and Exige were popular choices for people who wanted a street-legal sportscar to take to the racetrack or the local back roads without breaking the bank.

When we received the invitation to the Lotus launch party for the LA Auto Show last Friday, we didn’t quite know what to expect. However, we knew something had to be brewing when we discovered they hired Harrison & Shriftman for PR, the best in the business. Coincidentally, the day before the party, we ran into our friend Blair Chang, a star residential broker for architecturally significant properties and professional race car driver in the Patron Cup, who asked us if we were attending the Lotus event. It turns out that the party was to be held at a home in Stone Ridge Estates designed by Blair’s business partner Billy Rose.

Words cannot describe the 11,000+ sf architectural tour de force nestled at the top of Mulholland, but the good news is that it is on the market, and can be yours for a paltry $17.5 million. Check out the link here for pictures of the venue.

http://roseandchang.com/3350stoneridge

Anyway we digress. Upon entering the party, it became clear that Lotus has decided to make the bold and costly move of resurrecting and positioning itself as a premier automotive and lifestyle brand, similar to what Ferrari has done over the last 10 years. The party was intimate, exclusive and no expense was spared to entertain the guests, which comprised of some of the most prominent socialites and actors in town. Two separate bars were serving premium liquor and wine, with hors d’ oeuvres by Wolfgang Puck catering. Lotus cars, old and new, were placed across the yard, with a video over the pool showing vintage race videos and the new Lotus models.

As our “plus one,” we decided to bring along our buddy Tom Chan, owner of Lucent Motors in West LA for some colorful insight into Lotus’ new direction. Tom is arguably the most revered exotic car expert in Los Angeles. If you’re into cars, chances are you have heard of his shop or are one of his customers. He specializes in the repair, restoration, and customization of luxury and sporting automobiles including Lotus. In fact, both Tesla and the local Lotus dealers take their cars to be aligned and configured by Tom on his state-of-the-art laser alignment machine, since they do not have those capabilities in-house. As such, Tom is an expert on modern Lotuses and probably works on at least 1 or 2 a week in between attending to a line of Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bentleys or other cars that are queued up in his shop by eager owners who usually wait 2 weeks on average for an appointment.

I spoke with Jennifer Rogers this week – she is the great-granddaughter of Will Rogers (actor and Beverly Hills‘ first mayor). This weekend she will host, along with Dennis Quaid, Barneys New YorkVeuve Clicquot and Max Studio, a polo tournamnet to raise money for the Will Rogers Ranch Foundation which provides extra funds for her great grandfather namesake park and polo fields in the Palisades – where I, and many of my friends, learned to ride.

EVENT UPDATE!!

The WRRF’s 1st Annual “Dog Iron” Polo Cup & Champagne Brunch was held at the Will Rogers State Historic Park in the Pacific Palisades, California.  300 guests gathered to celebrate the life and memory of Will Rogers with tribute events including: two polo matches (Barney’s New York vs. Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers and Fair Hills Farms vs. MaxStudio.com), a Veuve Clicquot Champagne Divot Stomp, the “Dog Iron” Polo Cup Awards Presentation, and guided tours of the Ranch House.  Honorary co-chair Dennis Quaid—who rides his horse at the State Park on an almost daily basis—was onsite for a celebrity “Throw-In” of the game ball for the Dog Iron feature match between Fair Hills Farms and MaxStudio.com.

Will Rogers’ great granddaughter Jennifer Rogers-Etcheverry says, “Given the current budget crisis facing the state of California and its impact on our State Parks, our fundraising efforts are more important than ever.  The funds raised from the “Dog Iron” Polo Cup and Champagne Brunch will help ensure that the scenic trails, the tours of Will’s historic home, and the equestrian atmosphere will continue to entertain and serve the public as they have for the last 66 years.”

Already she has been able to use these funds to spiffy up the visitors center and adda gift shop, which will break ground this weekend.

The Will Rogers Polo Club has been playing polo almost every weekend from April through September for the past 60 Years. The historic polo field is the only polo field in Los Angeles and the Will Rogers Polo Club and California State Parks have worked extremely hard in keeping polo in Los Angeles.

The results from Sundays’ match are as follows:

Dog Iron Polo Cup Match #1 - Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers vs. Barney’s New York – Barney’s New York team won with 6 goals – team was: Leigh Brecheen 2 goals, Chuck Stanislawski, Ardeshir Rhadpour (4 goals, 4 defensive stops, also won for MVP), Joanna Wyszecki (0 goals). Pioneers defeated with 5 goals – team was: Erik Wright (2 goals), Soheil Goel (1 goal), Sean Goel, Malik Ibrahim (2 goals).

Dog Iron Polo Cup Match #2 - MaxStudio.com vs. Fairhills Farms - Fairhills Farms won with 9 goals – team was: Graydon Brittan 4 goals (Bella Doche-best pony), Erik Wright (5 goals, also won MVP), Brent Lantz, Gina Padilla. MaxStudio.com was defeated with only 8 goals – team was: Andrew Bossom (1 goal), Domingo Questel (4 goals), Bill Davis (3 goals), Hannah Taylor

So what’s next for Will Rogers polo?? You can always go to the free games on the weekend – the schedule is packed through October and can be seen on their website here: http://www.willrogerspolo.org/schedule.html

Trophies for the Will Rogers Ranch Foundation's Dog Iron Polo Match & Champagne Brunch on August 15, 2010 in Pacific Palisades, California.

And coming October 1oth, Nacho Figueras (captain of the BlackWatch team and the face of Ralph Lauren Fragrances) who has made it his quest to popularize the old sport of Kings, who along with Veuve Clicquot and Prince Harry, revived polo on Governors Island (a famed old polo haunt in Manhattan) will come to play a free 2,500 person exhibition match at the Will Rogers Park Will Rogers on October 10th, also sponsored by Veuve Clicquot. So far Prince Harry is not involved but he was also not on the roster the second year in Governor’s Island and did end up showing to support his polo pal Nacho.

“We are pleased to host Nacho Figuera on Oct 10! We have had many renowned polo players including Memo Gracida, not only play on our field but coach as well. We are proud to have amateurs, beginners, professionals all join us. And of course viewing the matches are always free to the public. So everyone please come and join us!” – Felice Densa, Will Rogers Polo Club

As one of the nation’s most beloved and adored Americans in the 1920s and 1930s, Rogers was an actor, cowboy, humorist, writer, entertainer and unofficial diplomat for the United States of America.  Also an early supporter of aviation, he tragically died in a 1935 plane crash in Barrow, Alaska at the age of 55.  That day, his loss was honored with radio and movie theaters going dark.  In 1944, his wife Betty Rogers donated their Pacific Palisades ranch home to the state of California to serve as a public and lasting memorial to her late husband—now known as the Will Rogers State Historic Park, located at 1501 Will Rogers State Park Road, Pacific Palisades, California.

“Dog Iron” is the working brand for the Dog Iron Ranch in Lake Oologah, Oklahoma, the birthplace and childhood home of Rogers.  When he set roots in California and developed the Will Rogers Ranch, he brought the “Dog Iron” brand with him and used it for all livestock and ranch activities.  The historic polo field at his ranch home is the only grass polo field left in Los Angeles, and was graded by Rogers himself for friends to enjoy, including Clark Gable, Walt Disney, and Spencer Tracy.

Audi’s 2010 Super Bowl party: Kellan Lutz, Taylor Lautner, Jessica Alba, Rob Lowe & Hilary Swank

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

I am officially over Sundance, Grammys and the Globes and before I gear up for New York Fashion Week, Valentine’s Day and Oscar week, I think we can all use a much appreciated breathe of fresh air from some down home, salt of the eath, all American, ma and pa, mom’s apple pie, firemen and cowboy, little league and hot dog, Walmart, team spirit, blue states, fly-over states, painted chests and foam fingering, good old fashion FOOTBALL!

Yes it’s Super Bowl Sunday in two days and while the rest of America is gearing up for a day of nachos, beer and cheese, my friends are flying down to Miami in private jets to host and attend the weekend’s hottest parties, sponsored by brands who are vying to get their spot in the sunshine from the 100 Million viewers who tune in. As someone who simply CANNOT pay attention to football unless there are a million other reasons to, I am particularly grateful to Audi, Coach, Cafeina, Tao, Maxim, Venus Williams, Pete Wentz, and Tide Febreeze who have given me something to care about and who understand the art of a good party and thankfully hire the right people to do the inviting! (ehem BNC, Michelle S, Ashlee A, Nick D).

Jessica Alba, Taylor Lautner, Hilary Swank, Kate Walsh, Tinsley Mortimer, Kellan Lutz, Rob Lowe (with his son who he is bringing to the big game on Sunday), Lance Bass, Osi Umenyiora of the New York Giants, and Chad Henne of the Miami Dolphins are all in Miami tonight to attend Audi’s kick off party at the W Hotel in South Beach. They were all shuttled in by Audi Q7 TDI clean diesel SUV – Audi’s new green car. Audi will also feature another new green car – their eco-friendly A3 TDI in a Super Bowl commercial premier during the Super Bowl. FYI – I live (LIVE!!) for commercial premieres! LIVE! The Audi commercial is a tongue-in-cheek spot with an updated classic song by Cheap Trick.

Jessica Alba, who had her daughter Honor is with her, says she’s pulling for the Saints – her father is a longtime Reggie Bush fan. (The little one will not attend the game – the stadium is too big for little girls!)

Kate Walsh and Hilary Swank have an on-going battle to see who could text the fastest – Hilary says she can text with her eyes closed without any mistakes. Lauren Brokaw, a Daily Truffle blogger, can do this too while talking and walking. I’ve seen it, and it is syck! Take that Swank! They should all enter LG’s national texting competition this year. Dorks. http://www.lgtexter.com/

Next stop?

1.) Maxim party

2.) Tao Miami at the the W

3.) Nick D’Annunzio’s parties at Cafeina – Feb. 5 & 6

4.) Coach’s Sake and Sushi party at The Townhouse

5.) Tide and Venus Williams product launch for Febreeze on the tennis courts at the W with Pete Wentz and Solange Knowles

Obsession of the Moment: Elephant Polo! Nepal just won the Championships!

Nepal Wins World Elephant Polo Championships

elephant poloVia New Tang Dynasty Television.

After a week of competition, host nation Nepal claimed the first prize against Thailand. Teams from all over the globe came to take part in this special tournament including Scotland, the United Arab Emirates and Austria.
[Peter Prentice, World Elephant Polo Association]:
“We have supported this country (Nepal) with Elephant Polo ever since 1982 and will continue to do so. And this year in fact is the biggest tournament we have ever had -twelve teams competing in these championships and three new countries coming to the frame- so we are very excited about this year.”

Two British adventurers started up the sport about thirty years ago. The rules of the game are similar to horse polo. But drivers control the elephants, to let the players concentrate on their extra long polo sticks.

[Creel Price, Australian Team Captain]:
“These beasts they love it, they’re out there…they love it. They actually know what’s going on. If the ball gets under them they know exactly what to do -not put their foot on the ball- its just incredible what they do. You can tell they genuinely love the competition and although it’s interesting, some of them don’t get on with each other and they’re playing against each other in some ways.”

No more than three elephants are allowed at a time in one half of the pitch. This is to avoid the animals’ herd instincts of huddling themselves into a crowd.

Thailand kicks off elephant polo tournament

31-03-2008 From Agence France-Presse

CHIANG RAI, Thailand(AFP) – Buddhist monks sprinkled holy water and draped garlands over the necks of 28 elephants at the start of a week-long polo tournament on Monday.
After the blessing, the elephants were treated to a sprawling buffet of fruit and vegetables ahead of the first match in a tournament to raise money for conservation projects to protect the beasts.

Seven teams from 15 countries are competing in the tournament. The elephants are actually handled by professional trainers, who guide the animals by kicking and prodding their heads with metal hooks.
The players, who ride on the back behind the trainer, wield a long mallet to whack the ball across a 100 meter-long (330-foot) field.
Each team has three players, and the games consist of two seven-minute chukkas of playing time, with a 15-minute break.

The seventh annual tournament is taking place at the luxury Anantara Golden Triangle resort, on a ridge overlooking the misty hills of neighbouring Laos and Myanmar.
“The elephant polo tournament is a charity event to help elephants,” an organizer at the hotel said.

Proceeds from the event benefit the National Elephant Institute, which promotes elephant conservation.
Thailand has an estimated 4,000 elephants — 2,500 domesticated and 1,500 in the wild — sharply down from about 50,000 in 1950, according to polo organizers.

Little Girl Pony “Zenyatta” Beats the Boys at Breeders’ Cup

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare
A lady never pushes back, and that is what a princess pony like Zenyatta does as well. Her trainers were worried she wouldn’t stand up against the boys who are trained to rough-house through-out the race. Little Zenyatta simply backs off when the boys push her around. Yesterday marked the most important race in the Breeders’ Cup – the Cup Classic – and Zenyatta’s trainers prepped her all month, sending her to school just to learn how to push the boys back. But she wouldn’t do it. Click to Continue Reading
