Obsession of the Moment: Miniature Lap Giraffes like Gregor Sokoblovsky, from the DirecTV commercials

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

This is the greatest thing we’ve seen since the Bronx Zoo Cobra started a twitter page. From the Sokoblovsky Farms website: ”Petite Lap Giraffes are very funny animal that require special care. They need lots of love. Hugs and kisses every day. Otherwise they make tears.” Now we can all have miniature lap giraffes’ just like Gregor Sokoblovsky, the Russian billionaire, from the DirecTV commercials.

Bonded Pair & Facebook Sensation Need a Home

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

A bonded pair of puppies rocked the adoption chat boards and Facebook rescue groups this week when one of the pair threw his arm around the littler one just as their photo was snapped.

The picture has become an internet sensation and rescue groups immediately rallied to keep these two together and away from purebred puppy hunters who might unknowingly tear them apart.

A “bonded pair”, for those who don’t know, refers to a set of animals that have been raised in the same household and would endure extra trauma from being separated. See their story in photos here.

This bonded pair consists of one German Shepherd puppy who smells like peanut butter and a one- yr-old white Australian Shepherd who came into the Orange County pound last Tuesday, looking more like they were meant to arrive at the Malibu Colony.

Amanda Reno (Beverly High alum, celebrity stylist who is busy in prep for the Emmys this week and sometimes Daily Truffle contributor) and her pound puppy partner-in-crime Amy Asher set their alarms for 4 AM the morning after hearing of their whereabouts, to beat the lines of brand new purebred puppy-hunters seeking Pekingese & Pomeranians & the likes.

They sat in front of the Orange County gate with weekly trashy magazines and coffee in hand, and spent the next several hours until the pound opened at 8am educating the six families, who came for the smaller German Shepherd puppy, the concept behind a bonded pair and their intention to save them together.

Once Amanda and Amy had the two puppies, who they named Sandy and Danny (a la “Grease” – as in the song from the movie “We go together …”), the girls raised $1000 overnight towards the care and foster of the two pups.

The two have now been microchip-ed, fixed, given shots and have clean little white teeth. Amanda and Amy told me the two cuddled in the back seat of the car the entire car ride home. The older of the two is very careful with the little one, who literally can’t wait for life. Neither dog has any issues or agression – they are simply perfect perfect perfect.

When Sandy and Danny first came in, she had hot pink nail polish on her toes – and he had green on his, leading Amanda to think they must have belonged to a little girl.

Because of a little, fuzzy photo that started circulating early last week on the internet, these two dogs have acquired quite the following on Facebook and other websites. The world is watching to see where they land; Amanda will be overseeing the rescue effort herself and expects a competitive turnout from families with large homes from the Westside to Malibu to Bel-Air, etc.

They are now safe in foster care of avid rescuer Diana Ybarra, who makes trips all around the state to transport dogs and other animals to and from her Bakersfield ranch. Diana recently pulled 20 dogs who were set to be euthanized in a Mont Clair shelter and flew them, a pit bull, and 7 other dogs on a private jet to adopting families in Oregon. Katherine Heigl’s rescue foundation often flies dogs around the country as well, especially if there is a better adoption rate for a certain breed in other parts of the nation. For instance, Chihuahuauas are a low commodity in LA, but hot, hot, hot in New York.

*$1000 is a miracle to raise on cue in the adoption world. A million families would pay good money for such a pair; the thought of a time crunch breaking up a happy puppy home was so alarming to the rescue community that Janna Kohl (of the Kohl’s stores) donated $600 immediately.

If you have an interest in these ready to go pair, email Amanda Reno at areno4@yahoo.com and check out their photo diary from the Orange County Shelter to the Bakersfield ranch on Facebook.

Tails of a Hollywood stylist dog rescuer: Rescuing “BELLE” and styling “CARMEN”

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

As a stylist here in Los Angeles, where I was born and raised (Beverly Vista, Beverly High), I spend a lot of time at fittings, shopping and finding perfect hiding gems for my clients to wear on the red carpets. The second I am done with that, I’m at my computer checking on that Boxer in Baldwin Park shelter, networking chihuahuas or volunteering at rescue events. Here is what’s gone on this week:

I spent the whole day at a pet adoption at Pan Pacific park on Beverly and Gardner across from Spot Pet Store, put on by Los Angeles County Care and Control in partnership with Animal Advocated Alliance. The adoptions went AMAZING today! No pup went back to Baldwin pound (where they were all from)!

Baldwin pound has been getting lots of support lately due to friend, actress and fellow animal supporter Denise Richards volunteering at this pound and adopting from this pound (you can see all her rescues dogs in episodes of her show on E!, she had an unbelievable number of pets that were prominently featured in the first episode). At the time of her show she had3 cats (Max, Billy, and Stan) and 11 dogs (Tina, Hank, Wally, Luke, Scarlet, Lily, Emma, Olivia, Sugar, George, and Lucy – a Boston, Frenchie, Chihuahua, Pug, Lab, and two Cavs) and 2 pigs (Charlotte and Bert).

Scott Harper, a trainer from The Biggest Loser, just adopted from Baldwin as well :)

As a side note - Kim Bassinger has adopted 13 puppies from Los Angeles pounds!!

I loved seeing a super rad couple adopt a german shepard mix today…girl was in chanel ballet flats with a killer chanel bag and guy was super groovy..get into it…only hip people adopt! fact!

So many dogs to network and find homes for. for as many that are safe tonite…there are thousands who are not. please educate yourselves and spread the message. ADOPT DON’T SHOP.

BELLE our new rescue, being fostered by Stephanie Chao, is a little girl, 3 years old – All shots and micro chipped. Will be fixed soon and avail to love forever. I spent the day with BELLE and she will be an amazing pup for anyone. …  She got her first bath today!!!!! Parties interested in permanent adoption of BELLE, contact me amandareno@dailytruffle.net

Humane Society’s Genesis Awards @ Beverly Hilton Hotel ~ Pierce Brosnan, Melanie Griffith, Antonio Banderas, Teri Hatcher

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Though animal lovers and philanthropists ourselves, Dr. Chiu and I hadn’t fully realized the magnitude of love and support the entertainment and news media industry has for our furry, flying, chirping, sea-swimming friends until we attended the highly-acclaimed 24th Annual Genesis Awards on March 20th 2010 at the Beverly Hills Hilton. We were humbled, saddened, inspired, and enlightened as we celebrated animals in television and film and confronted instances of animal cruelty throughout our country. The passion of writers, producers, directors and others in the Industry in raising public awareness of animal rights issues is incredible and their awards well-deserved. The Human Society of the United Statescontinues to make phenomenal progress in animal rights legislation across the Nation, including the passage of 121 new animal protection laws in 2009 involving puppy mills, factory farming, animal fighting, and fur labeling.

Embarrassingly so, this event was particularly memorable because I shared my very first gourmet Vegan meal with 700 animal rights activists, who probably would’ve had my head had I asked for butter. Luckily, every bite was more delicious than the previous and I licked my gold-plated plates clean. Who would’ve guessed that a vegan dessert could be this decadent: “Exotic Tropical Fruit with Coconut Cream and Dark Chocolate Leaf served in a Martini Glass”?! Such dishes by Chef Tal, author of The Conscious Cook: Delicious Meatless Recipes That Will Change the Way You Eat, and Vegan Chef to the U.S. Senate and Oprah were beyond amazing. For a long moment there, I seriously contemplated converting to veganism.

Other highlights of the evening included chatting with both celebrity and everyday animal rights luminaries in the VIP reception and after-party. From the enchanting Tippi Hedren, 20-year Genesis Awards presenter and 2010’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and the incredible Keely Shaye Pierce, 2-time Genesis Award winner, I learned that with increased visibility comes increased social responsibility. Even the Los Angeles Firefighter Joe St. Georges, who rescued a dog from the dangers of our L.A. River, and the 2 gals who went undercover to shut down Hump, a Santa Monica restaurant illegally serving whale, taught me that everyday provides at least one opportunity to make a difference for animals. Compassion for animals indeed crosses all social boundaries.

In case you’re wondering, I wore a custom-designed Badgley Mischka gown, which to my knowledge, harmed no animals in its production. My leather Louboutins were tossed, in exchange for a pair of animal-friendly satin Casadei pumps. No leather clutch for me either; I accessorized only with diamonds and aJudith Leiber satchel. (Negative social impact of diamonds and child labor is a different topic that we would have to discuss another day). I believe Dr. Chiu wore a Yes Saint Laurent suit, Hermes scarf, and also Lassie-approved shoes and beltsJ He even left his leather wallet at home and carried cash in his pockets! Baby steps, right?

To borrow from Dug, the dog in Up (which won for Outstanding Feature Film), “To the Human Society: I have just met you. And I love you.”

Among this year’s celebrity presenters and attendees were Antonio Banderas, Kristen Bell, Pierce Brosnan, Emily Deschanel, Jessalyn Gilsig, Ginnifer Goodwin, Melanie Griffith, Teri Hatcher, Tippi Hedren, Jon Lovitz, Maria Menounos and Moby.

The 24th Genesis Awards will air on Animal Planet on Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25.

The event is sponsored in part by Market Development Group, Inc.,Prai Beauty Group, Tenet, Deluxe, Honda, Euro RSCG, and Bernheim Promotion.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s largest animal protection organization — backed by 11 million Americans, or one of every 28. For more than a half-century, The HSUS has been fighting for the protection of all animals through advocacy, education and hands-on programs. Mr. Winston

Mr. Winston wishes you Happy Holidays and a great New Year!

As some of you know, I am an avid animal rescuer as well as very active with raising money and doing charity work for all furry creatures.  Saving and helping animals is my main passion in life. I won’t go on and on like I usually do about this topic… I want to make this a happy post, not a depressing but true one !

While buying Holiday presents at PetCo today, I decided to dedicate a post to all of the animals out there.

I believe that having animals as pets is the best thing that someone can do for them self.  I personally could not live without my doggies.  (One of my dogs, Bow, turned 5 years old today.  Bow was my companion and never left my side for a few years while I was sick…. We loveee her !:) )

My furry fam: Bow, Lily, Minnie Mouse, and Winston

Here are a few presents I bought:

Cute sparkly mouse and ball for my friends cat Falcore

Falcore was adopted from the South La shelter a few months ago.

Gingerbread man for Charlie Normie

Oddly enough, my sister, has a dog named Charlie and Charlie is the sister of one of my dogs, Minnie Mouse.  They are both rescues from a decrepit trailer park in Palmdale, Ca.  (My sister and her two little girls had a b-day party for Charlie a few weeks ago…It was the first dog birthday I have ever attended, lol)

Presents for Schumey and Jasper

Aw baby jasper

Baby Jasper

These toys are for Jasper and Schumi, who are both only a few months old.

Jasper was actually just rescued a few weeks ago.

Baby Schumi!

Here are a bunch of other toys/accessories I bought for other friends and family :)

Faux slipper for Griffin

I have a friend whose dog ALWAYS steals his slippers.  It is quite comical because he doesn’t want to eat them, he just enjoys getting the slipper out of the closet and playing with it.  It would highly amuse me if I put this slipper in my friends closet and Griffin just happened to bring it out of the closet and play with it.

Kong aka the baby sitter

Ok so this is the best invention for dogs out there.  Kong’s can keep a dog occupied for hourrsss !  You can put peanut butter, this dog cheese wiz stuff, or these edible stick things that go inside. My dogs will sit there and try to get out/eat the peanut butter for what seems like forever.  If I know I’m going to be away from home for awhile, I put one of these stick things in it and when I come home whichever dog is still trying to get it out and eat it.

Because I have four dogs who are mostly all different sizes, I have multiple size kong’s.

Another good thing about this wonder is that it is rubber so it cannot get dirty and it bounces for added fun :)

Audrey and Eldad's incredible and fascinating book

This is such a fantastic present!  I give a lot of these books out as stocking stuffers and everyone loves them.  Every book sold helps Audrey and Eldad save more animals, helps get the word out about how poorly animals are abused and how a bath, a meal, and some love can change them instantly.  I also keep a few books in my car and hand them out to people occasionally.

Ok, so we all get a bunch of really crappy gifts from people that are just giving to give, recycling gifts, or just have different taste than you.  I have tried in the past few years to tell those certain people, “Hey, lets donate to each others charities this year instead of gifts”.  It has so far only worked a few times, and of course I still get stuck with a ton of things i’d love to throw away ;-)

There are two ways you can help if you are at Petco on Doheny, or i’m sure any Petco.  There is a big bin that the West Valley La Animal shelter has put out with a list of about 20 things that they need for the babies. The other way to help is to donate money at the register for an animal charity when asked.  I donated today, and was given a very cute t-shirt for my donation.

If you are able to help with donations or bringing food, blankets, crates, or toys, please contact any of the following foundations/ rescue groups:

♥La native Audrey Spilker Hagar and husband Eldad Hagar’s amazingggg organization Hopeforpaws.org

♥Any of the Los Angeles animal shelters – North Central, South LA, West LA, East Valley, or West Valley.

♥Animaladvocatesalliance.org or NolaSinger@hotmail.com

♥Much love animal rescue

NOW GO GIVE YOUR FURRY FRIENDS SOME HUGS AND KISSES !

Merry Christmas and from two weeks ago Happy Hanukkah !

It’s all Disney’s fault.
(RIP Roy Disney, he died today, December 16th, 2009)

My favorite thing to read everyday is New York Magazine’s: The Cut. While doing my daily reading, I came across this new post about Anna Wintour as Anna Wintermouse and Karl Lagerfeld as a mouse. My face instantly lit up and I believe the words that came out of my mouth were, ” Ahhhhh omfg, this is the cutest thing ever.” Chanel + Mice = me with a huge smile! It was at this time that I decided the fair and beloved readers of the Daily truffle needed to see this !

Amy Odell, writer for The Cut, says in this post, ” However the whole thing gives us an idea: an animated feature like Ratatouille but with mice doing fashion things, like going to Mice Fashion Week, instead of food thing.” I think I should send this article to John Lasseter, head of Disney Pixar :) (I have a major Disney obsession)

I showed this adorable article to a friend and she was less than amused.  I began to ponder why I have such a thing for cute mice….. and then it hit me: Ever since I can remember, there have been mice in compromised situations and I have always wanted to help them, be it real life or animated films slash books.

When I was around seven, I told my mother that when I grew up I was going to buy all the pet stores in the world so that people could not buy mice to feed to their pet snakes….that or just kill snakes worldwide (If you have read previous articles of mine you know I HATE snakes.)

Aw !

Aw !

My dad and sister hate all rodents (Caroline does too).  A few weeks after we moved into our new house, many years ago, my mom saw a rat in our backyard and my dad called his realtor because he wanted to move (We did not move).  My dad has a strange man named “George (Horhay) ” who comes to our house and changes various mouse traps… This upsets me every time.  To this day, I still buy my dad rubber rats that squeak, toy mice for cats, and mice that you pull a string and they run around the room, just to bother him :)

I have always loved these adorable little creatures because of the movies I have seen over the span of my twenty four years; I have always wanted to help them out of there scary situations.

The new pet for Los Angeles urbanites? Barnyard animals!

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

HollandLop

With proper care, some barnyard residents can transition to city dwellers

By Ann Herold

Los Angeles magazine, October 2009

Belgian d’Uccle
CHICKEN

This bantam is available in a beautifully speckled pattern known as “mille fleur,” hence its nickname, the Millie. The hen is docile and can be unusually tame.

Khaki Campbell
DUCK

Developed in England by Adele Campbell, it’s equally at home on land and doesn’t require a pond to be happy. A prolific layer, it’s also quiet and sweet.

Rex
RABBIT

An especially good-natured, intelligent rabbit with short, velvety fur, the Mini Rex weighs about 4 pounds, while the Standard Rex can get as large as 11.

Nigerian Dwarf
GOAT

Coveted as a superior dairy producer for its high-butterfat milk, this animal also makes a great pet because of its gentle, affectionate personality.

Holland Lop
RABBIT

This droopy-eared charmer has a kind temperament—it won’t bite the kids—and compact size (three to four pounds), making it the most popular of bunny breeds.

Araucana
CHICKEN

Prized for its rarity and the blue coloring of its eggs, the South American native settles well in an urban yard but is not as easily tamed as other species.

Cochin Bantam
CHICKEN

Not a high-volume layer, it makes up for low productivity with its friendliness. The hen takes to human handling and will mother other members of the flock.

Chinese Painted
QUAIL

Also called the Button quail, it comes in several color mutations and lays the spotted eggs prized in Asian cuisine. While easy to care for, it may live only two years.

Red Wiggler
WORM

The species known as Eisenia fetida is a smart addition to the compost pile: It can consume its weight in organic matter every day and is a prolific procreator.

To purchase the chickens featured here, contact reputable hatcheries such as the Connecticut-based mypetchicken.com, which accepts small orders. For rabbits, start with rabbitrescue.com. Quails are carried periodically at independent pet stores such as Birds Plus (818-901-1187), in Van Nuys, and Andersen’s Pet Shop, in Montrose. The ducks may be ordered through the family-owned cacklehatchery.com, but the minimum order is 15 birds. The Nigerian Dwarf Goat Association is an excellent source for breeders. Red worms are sold at Sunset Boulevard Nursery, in Silver Lake.

Pet AirwaysI can’t count the times my friends have had to skip trips or drive somewhere to avoid putting their pets through the traumatizing experience of flying in the luggage cabin. But now I am hearing an airline has set up to properly take care of dogs while flying them to their destination. What a useful service at last! This jitney kennel, goes between LA and NY with stops in between like Denver, Chicago and DC. Like a four star hotel with a Fed-Ex business plan, you can track your pet, upgrade amenities and all for a reasonable rate of $149 each way.

The "Pink Dolphin" is finally caught on film!!

UK’s The Gaurdian is reporting a rare pink bottlenose dolphin has been spotted again today in Lake Calcasieu, an inland saltwater estuary, north of the Gulf of Mexico in south-west Louisiana. The albino dolphin was first spotted last year. http://www.guardian.co.uk/ Tuesday 3 March 2009 . The animal has been recorded on video by local charter boat Captain Erik Rue, 42, below.

Regina Asmutis-Silvia, a senior biologist with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, said: “I have never seen a dolphin coloured in this way in all my career.” While this animal looks pink, it is an albino which you can notice in the pink eyes. Albinism is a genetic trait and it unclear as to the type of albinism this animal inherited.

Possibly related to Amazon “pink dolphins” (pictured below), this one is an amazing anomaly. Technically an albino, it has reddish eyes and glossy pink skin.

A different dolphin species, the endangered Amazon river boto (Inia geoffrensis), which lives in South America , is sometimes called the pink river dolphin because of its appearance.

Journey of the Pink Dolphins: An Amazon Quest is a meticulous account of the natural history of this species: it is also a poignant portrait of the magnificent, joyful, troubled country of Brazil. Sy Montgomery is an exceptional writer, balancing a vibrant curiosity and eye for local color with a crooked sense of humor.

Borneo's clouded leopard declared a new species

A bizarre type of animal that has been spotted on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo was, till date, thought to bea cousin of a leopard. But, on Thursday, the WWF has confirmed it to be a completely new cat species.

American researchers have determined that the two populations of leopard and this new species diverged some 1.4 million years ago. To make this finding, they compared the DNA of this new leopard with its mainland cousin, as per the conservation group.

The new species seems to be the largest predator in Borneo, having the longest canine teeth in comparison to its size of any cat. The animal can grow as large as a small panther.

It has been estimated that there are 5,000 to 11,000 of these animals left in Borneo’s rain forests. And, these animals seem to be threatened by logging. The rain forests are believed to hold a number of more undiscovered species, as per WWF.

The clouded leopard was first described in 1821 by a British naturalist named Edward Griffith. At that time, no notice was made of the physical differences between the mainland and island populations (and it was still years before genetic analysis was available to scientists). So mainland and island leopards were combined as one species under the scientific name of Neofelis nebulosa. Today, in light of the genetic evidence, the mainland cat will retain the scientific name Neofelis nebulosa (below) but the island populations will be classified under the new name, Neofelis diardi (above).

Bernese Mountain Puppies

My favorite kind of dog!! If I am ever to take on the enormous responsibility of a pet – this will be my first second and third choice. These Bernese mountain dogs remind me of my days in the Swiss Alps – they come from the Swiss mountain dog family which includes the infamous rum-baring rescuing St Bernard, Appenzell and a few others. Classified as work dogs, they make great pets and friends!

My Miniature Pony "Maholo"

When I was 12, my father picked me up a miniature pony while on business in the mid-west, and had her crated back to Beverly Hills! He was as darling as you think – I named him “Maholo”, meaning “thank you” in Hawaiian, my mother’s native land. This tiny version of every little girls’ dream was so sweet and so cute … If you are ever to buy a miniature pony, please do your research – it would be incredibly irresponsible of me to tell you how fantastic a pet they are without mentioning the how incredibly frail and prone to sickness they are. In order to keep one happy and healthy, they require constant upkeep, health check-ups, plenty of room, attention and love. Best to keep them inside to prevent sickness and picking up germs – they do make fabulous in-door pets … well, except for the scratches on hard-wood floors.
