New York Report: Library Honors Lions – Ethan Hawke, Steve Martin, Christina Ricci, Ivanka Trump, Amanda Hearst, Bee Shaffer

After a Halloween weekend as both a Princess (sadly at some point I lost my tiara) and French maid (I managed to hang onto my duster), Monday was a bit soon to hit the dance floor.  However, in the spirit of philanthropy, I rallied. Sponsored by Asprey London and held in the grandeur of the New York Public Library, this year’s Library Lions Gala honored writer, playwright, screenwriter Steve Martin; The Tipping Point author Malcolm Gladwell; actor, novelist and screenwriter Ethan Hawke; noted scholar and widely acclaimed leader of The New York Public Library Paul LeClerc; and novelist Zadie Smith. NYC: Mick Rock Book Launch Party at John Varvatos Store (Formerly CBGBs) with Jimmy Fallon, Alexandra Richards, Jamie Burke, Charlotte Ronson

rock photographer Mick Rock and Jimmy Fallon

It was an eclectic crowd, young and old, and all walks of life who came this Monday to pay homage to legendary 70′s rock photographer Mick Rock who was celebrating his new book “Exposed” on the Bowery.  Actor Jimmy Fallon, Charlotte Ronson and singer Bebe Buell (Liv Tyler’s mom) were just a few who came to to his gallery show at The Morrison Hotel Gallery (presented by Creem Magazine and Russian Standard Vodka).  His photos are sexy, hot and pure rock and roll but the open bar is dead and I have 45 minutes to kill before the after-party. NYC: Sothebys “Nude” Art Auction & Party Benefiting the New York Academy of Art

Eric Fischl painting "Beach Scene With Pink Hat"

Who can resist a party called Take Home a Nude? Titillating yes.  Scandalous no. The reality is it was an art auction and cocktail party of nude art work held at Sotheby’s benefiting the New York Academy of Art this past Monday, October 18, 2o10.  The event raised $800,000.00 for the Academy’s extensive scholarship programs.

The Eric Fischl watercolor went for $75,000 to a private bidderTop Chef’s Padma Lakshmi won Kim McCarty‘s Swirl for $12,000 (from the silent auction), Alex White won Donald Baechler‘s Skull for $6,000.  The Will Cotton custom portrait went for $44,000 (bidder was private) Will Cotton painted Katie Perry in the nude for her Teenage Dream album cover and also served as an art director for her California Gurls video.   Aby Rosen won John Currin‘s Glana for $15,000.

"Teenage Dream" album cover by Will Cotton

Apparently the art was inspiring.  When I was running late, the  girlfriend I was meeting ran into a male acquaintance of hers and sparks flew….  She and I walked around a bit, checked out the art, and when we were ready to leave he came back over and asked her to dinner.  I guess what I’m trying to say is that instead of taking home a nude she ended up taking home a date… that is unless they got frisky later.  I’m digressing…

Attendees included honoree artist Eric Fischl; Co-Chairs Chanel CEO Maureen Chiquet, husband Antoine Chiquet, Samantha Boardman Rosen and Aby Rosen; NYAA Board Chair Eileen Guggenheim, NYAA President David Kratz, Glenda Bailey, top NYC realtor Serena Boardman, gallery owner Mary Boone, writer Amanda Brooks, writer Bob Colacello, Dr. Fred Brandt, actor Ben Gazzara, Padma Lakshmi, designer Nanette Lepore, Nicole Miller, actress Gretchen Mol, designer Cynthia Rowley, fashion writer Helen Lee Schifter, model Hana Soukupova, Jamie Tisch, and Allure Magazine‘s Linda Wells along with participating artists Will Cotton, Donald Baechler and more.

NYC: Orianne Collins Store Opening, Ferragamo party and more

Orianne Collins

New York, NY – October 15, 2010: Last Thursday despite gusting wind and rain I headed uptown for the opening of OC Concept Store for what seemed like  a fun store opening and after party.  The highlight of the occasion? Swiss born entrepreneur Orianne Collins who is also singer Phil Collins ex-wife.  Her store showcases not only Orianne Collins Jewelry but also features a number of other luxury jewelry designers, watches, leather goods, art and  men’s accessories in a 3,400 square foot space designed by architect Christophe Pillet.

model Selita Ebanks @ Ferragamo party

I was a late arrival as I had another cocktail party at the Ferragamo store on 5th Avenue in conjunction with W Magazine benefiting New Yorkers for Children. The event was hosted by Chiara Ferragamo, model Selita Ebanks, Natalia Echavarria, Nicole Esposito, Julia Macklowe, Maggie Betts and W Magazine‘s Karla Martinez

I heard OC Concept had been a mob scene earlier.  Guests at the store opening included foxy Tamara Mellon of Jimmy Choo, actress Abigail Breslin, NBC’s Dan Abrams, designer Catherine Malandrino, Andrew Saffir & Daniel Benedict, Paper Magazine’s Peter Davis, Lady Liliana Cavendish, textile designer Olya Thompson, and Swiss Consul Sabine Ulmann Shaban

I was looking forward to the after party at Rouge Tomate which is practically across the street from her new store. I was excited because I was told Bob Sinclar was going to be DJ-ing and speed painter Franck Bouroullec was performing.  I started to notice an interesting trend.  Loads of British accents around me and I realized it must be the Phil Collins connection. I’m utterly charmed by a proper one not the pub variety mind you.  It’s also the dry wit that gets me.  Regardless, Orianne turned what should have been a dark and stormy night best left indoors into an amusing adventure uptown.

From the mean streets of the West Village.  Xox

Fall 2010 Fashion: Cynthia Steffe channels Eloise at the Plaza

Eloise makes me think of my sister, Wendy, and my tons of trips to New York per year as a little girl.  My sister’s favorite childhood book has always been Eloise at the Plaza.  We are 16 years apart, and when I was a little girl she would always read/tell me about Eloise, and I could never get enough!

I spent a lot of time in NYC as a child, and always wanted to meet and play with Eloise and her dog Weenie.  I would anxiously eat with my family at the Palm Court, hoping to get a glimpse of Eloise.  I also was known  for dragging various members of my group over to see her portrait.

Upon looking at the pictures from Cynthia Steffe’s Fall 2010 collection, I immediately thought of Eloise, and NOT just because of the white socks and black mary janes ;-)  If only the models from this show carried or walked pugs on the runway, it would of been perfecttt!

“Two years after the first Eloise book’s publication, a painting by Knight was hung in the lobby of the hotel. “We’ve had generations of mothers bringing daughters or grandmothers bringing granddaughters to the hotel to see the portrait or go to the Palm Court to have tea,” Curt Gathje, the Plaza’s manager of the office of the president and unofficial house historian said.

The portrait disappeared after a fraternity party. As the story goes, when Princess Grace toured the hotel with her children, she was dismayed to find the portrait gone. After that, Knight painted a new oil painting that now hangs opposite the hotel’s Palm Court, where Eloise lunches on rainy days. A postcard version of the portrait was sold in the hotel.” – Eloisewebsite.com

Inside the Plaza, there was an Eloise Ice Cream parlor and there was a special menu inside the Palm Court restaurant.

The Palm Court, Where Eloise ate on rainy days

I just got back from New York, which obviously meant that I went out of my way to go to the Plaza Hotel to see the new Eloise shop.  All I can say is that it is QUITE unfair this shop/tea house/boudoir/dress up haven did not exist when I was a little girl, or maybe it’s better for my family that it didn’t exist, as I would never want to leave!

About the Plaza:

The Plaza, home of Eloise is located in New York City at Fifth Avenue at Central Park South. Designed by famed architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, “the greatest hotel in the world” opened October 1, 1907. Built on the site of a 15-year-old predecessor of the same name, no expense was spared on the 19-story, French Renaissance “château.” Marble lobbies, solid mahogany doors, 1,650 crystal chandeliers, Swiss organdy curtains, privately manufactured Irish linens, and gold-encrusted china were just a few of its features. And now, as a member of America’s Family of Grand Hotels, The Fairmont Hotels, this National and City Historic Landmark structure is once again as it was always meant to be …the premier hotel of New York. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places. – Eloisewebsite.com

NYC: Swarovski Elements hosts 22 Little Black Dresses Auction – Halle Berry, Julianna Margulies, Sofia Vergara

Phillip Lim, Donna Karan, Valentino, Givenchy

Red lipstick, black lace underwear, diamond stud earrings, pearls and the little black dress (aka the LBD) are all timelessly chic.  In 1926 Coco Chanel designed the first LBD and it was an enormous hit.  Prior to that only widows wore the color and it was considered shocking and taboo to wear any other time.  I think Audrey Hepburn best captured the slightly risque decadence of a LBD wrapped up in an innocent bow as Holly Golightly in the 1960′s movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It immortalized the glamour of a modern girl traipsing around Manhattan in her LBD and Wayfarer sunglasses peering into Tiffany’s and dreaming of more (see photos below).  Holly seems like a little girl who has dived into her mommy’s closet and is playing dress up.  The little black dress gives her the veneer of tough big city girl, but we know that deep down she’s a softie who sings Moon River to her cat.

Twenty-two designers have taken on the challenge of re-inventing this classic in a charity auction curated by Phillips de Pury under the high patronage of Carla Bruni-Sarkosy for breast cancer research raising over $100,000.  I was invited to the event by two of my girlfriends on the hosting committee (Bianca Pratt and Sally Wu) and was excited to see the results.  My personal fave was the Givenchy (see pic above) which reminds me of something Milla Jovovitch would wear in The Fifth Element. Smoking hot for a night on the town.  However, the tasteful simplicity of the Valentino rocks as well.  A perfect Cameron Diaz legs dress.

Participating designers included Alberta Ferretti, Alexis Mabille, Azaaro, Boudicca, Catherine Malandrino, Diane Von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Fendi, Gaspard Yurkievich, Gianfranco Ferre, Giorgio Armani Prive, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, Jean Paul Gaultier, Lanvin by Alber Elbaz, Mario Schwab, Martin Grant, Missoni, Phillip Lim, Sonia Rykiel, Thakoon, Valentino and Vivienne Westwood.

Halle Berry showed up without new love Oliver Martinez.  She was in a formfitting little black dress by Roberto Cavalli, handbag by Stella McCartney and jewelry by SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS.

Julianna Margulies wore a little black dress by Helmut Lang, shoes by Yves Saint Laurent and jewelry by SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS

Sofia Vergara (ABC’s Modern Family) sizzled in a snake print dress by Jean Paul Gaultier, shoes by Prada and jewelry by Shourouk made with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS.  I attended Sofia’s housewarming party in NYC earlier this summer that she had with her new boyfriend, banking heir, Nick Loeb.

Also in attendance were actress Lisa Edelstein of House, J Alexander of America’s Next Top Model, 70′s supermodel Pat Cleveland, Lady Liliana Cavendish, Muffie Potter Aston, Yigel Azrouel, Christina Cuomo, Kelly Choi of Top Chef Masters, and Amy Fine Collins of Vanity Fair.

Mulberry S/S 2010 Fashion Show & After Party

When I grow up, I want to be just like Emma Hill (Creative Director for Mulberry), or so I told my mom some 10 years ago…. Ok, so I had no clue who she was then, but going back, If I was asked what I wanted to be when I grow up, that would be my answer !!

Day 7 NYFW SS 11: 3.1 Phillip Lim & Proenza Schouler

3.1 Phillip Lim:

A dear friend and hero, Phillip once again hit a homer … set designer Andrew Ondrejcak deconstructed a sculpture of massive proportion as the runway in the Park Avenue Armory on this glorious day. Models of all ethnicities, one of the highlights of a 3.1 show, sauntered in sumptuous draped knits and laser etched leather shorts or lambskin paillette illusion t-shirts paired with sexy mile high sandals! Must Haves include: organza piped trench, dotted Jacquard tux jacket, copper bonded peplum jacket with matching shorts (!!!) … tons of fans on board to cheer our man … Kanye, Phillip’s new BFF Alexa Chung, Rashida Jones, etc. …

Proenza Schouler:

Always a hard ticket to score on this last evening of NYFW, tho always worth the trouble; if only for the spectator sport of celebrity gawking pre show … haha. From my front row perch, spotted: Leighton Meister (super cute in cropped sweater), Lauren Santo Domingo, Susie Bubble (love her blog!), Sarah from Colette, Brad Goreski (everywhere this week, looking very well turned out), Rachel Zoe, tho Rodger had to stand behind security … don’t think he got much of a glimpse of the yummy pin dyed silks the nubby jackets coming down the runway. Combinations of neon orange and fuchsia took my breathe away … a winner for sure …

New York Fashion Week Day 6 – Karen Walker, Alyssa Norton, Creatures of the Wind, Creatures of Comfort Boutique Fete

creatures of the wind rtw spring 2011

Karen Walker:

‘Just Another Day’ was the theme for ruffles galore! Oranges and yellows, finally chic rain gear and best of all … new sunglasses in the goodie bag; for front seat only, of course! Always nice to spend some girl tie with the lovely Piera and Christene from R29, working hard on one of our fave dailies. See images on WWD.

Alyssa Norton:

Dropped by Soho House to view new jewelry collection from Alyssa Norton; wonderful quilted neck and bracelet pieces accented with bronze closures in bright colours, not to mention what a lovely gal she is … always a pert! Overheard in lobby from a [Soho House] member …”buggers! I can’t hardly sport my bikini in the lobby now can I ?” upon hearing that the poolside roof was closed for the Mulberry event that evening.

Creatures of the Wind:

Quite an ambitious show for this newish collective; from the invitation one would be lead to believe it was a presentation, so quite surprised to find seats and a show starting quite later than expected … missing my one o’clock and two o’clock … oye! But what lovely knits! Tho the photogs were quite bullies when a model couldn’t quite walk to their needs … congrats to the boys on a very neat one!

Creatures of Comfort Boutique Fete:

Creatures of Comfort, our LA go to store for Isabel Marant and Repetto celebrated their new location on Mulberry Street in the midst of the infamous San Gennaro Festival; luckily the booths were just setting up so we were spared the overwhelming aroma of sausages and other meats (speaking as a 23 year vegetarian …) All the designers showed up from Tiffany Tuttle, Mary Ping to Tom Scott. Great space, especially ‘atrium’ where guests retreated for the fresh scent of laundry wafting from an upstairs neighbor … go figure!
