Vanessa Bruno’s L.A. Store Opening Party

Fact: Vanessa Bruno and Linlee Allen know how to throw a party. Ce soir, Lindsey Lerman and I went to Vanessa Bruno’s Melrose store opening celebration.  While I was a little bummed to not gawk at Vanessa’s two lines, strewn around the store in a modern but Parisian and feminine way, I forgave VB et crew because there were GIRLS IN SWINGS… and a super cool neon-ish art installation by French artist Cyprien Chabret !  Yes, VB’s opening event is COOLER than yours will ever be…  Continue reading

Vanessa Bruno’s Melrose F/W 2010 Breakfast

Ce matin (this morning), I had a delightful Parisian breakfast with a bunch of eclectic fashionistas. While I’m sure some of you were at Temple, I attended a breakfast for Vanessa Bruno to debut her Autumn/Winter collection for a small group of fashion insiders at her recently-opened boutique located at 8448 Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood.

Bianca’s Beautiful LA: “Olvera Street”

Bianca’s Beautiful L.A.- “Olvera Street”

As a native Angelino, i’ve spent my fair share of time frolicking and eating down on Olvera Street. I’d even go so far as to say that it’s one of my all time favorite places in the entire city…its that good. Olvera Street is the oldest street in all of Los Angeles- it even still has some of the original cobblestones from yesteryear…and the original Avila Adobe (the oldest house of LA) that has been restored and turned into a museum that you can visit for free anytime of the year- during regular business hours. Its really a beautiful little oasis in the middle of downtown, right across from Union Station, blocks away from the county jail, and one minute away from Chinatown. It’s a little reminder of just how Mexican L.A used to be…errr still is. If Tijuana is too far…go to Olvera…its literally a half hour away from wherever you are in the city because of how centrally located it is to many of our freeways. I was turned onto Olvera Street as a child, by my father, who started his own mexican restaurants because of his love for our Los Angeles-Mexican food. I went everywhere with my dad- and he was always downtown at the produce market, the flower mart, and Olvera Street. There were many other places in town to have good mexican food- but my dad fell in love with El Rancho Grande…

Check out their brick stove- its insane- it looks like it’s been there for a hundred years and its so basic yet so ‘Grande’ they have the ONLY taquitos i will ever eat- (i order the #3 combo- 3taquitos, beans w/ cheese, and salad).

The shredded beef, the way they deep fry them, their special avocado sauce- its not guacamole- everything they do there is just right. They cook your food in record time too- before you can even turn around they have your order ready- its fantastic! Be sure to get either an horchata ( rice drink) or a jamaica (hibiscus drink)….yummm! After the feast i recommend going for some stuffed churros from The Churro Man…ask for a churro with custard…it will be life changing…when i see plain churros i cant even stomach the idea of having mine plain…its so sacreligious.

Moving right along…there are so many stores to hit-

i dont recommend hitting them all-

some of them get a little redundant

- with very few of them selling very different things- that said however- if you are a hunter like i am- hit everysingle vendor you see because this place is such a gem stuck in time.

Olvera street has fallen on hard times and is in desperate need of the city’s help to be able to stay authentic and special.

Over the last few years i’ve seen three of my favorite places there, that had been there for what seemed like forever- finally close their doors for good. Its so sad when that happens-

The Candeleria is closed, the glass blower is gone, and the old man that used to make velvet paintings is now gone…They each were such a big part of what made olvera street so unique- the old velvet paintings were housed in a shop that had cobwebs that had never been touched for probably 50 years- i was careful not to disturb them- for fear that i might be tainting the very delicate ecosystem that was unique to the Olvera Street legacy…apparently that didn’t work.

The glass blower used to have all his wares proudly displayed for all to see on beautiful reflective glass shelves- they shone so brightly in the California sunshine- and on the rare occasion that you would be there at just the right moment, as the crowd would gather you could watch them making new glass figurines…they were exquisite and now extinct. I have a superstition- every time i go to Olvera Street, i have to (even if there isnt any water in it) throw a penny into the blue fountain located sort of near the middle of the street- there’s another fountain- but that’s not the one i wish in- and dont be fooled by the “wishing well” either- i swear by the blue fountain..its lucky. Weekly Juice: Angeleno mag pool party, Avalon hotel Wednesdays, Alex Hitz hosts book signing and more

Weekend report …

It’s been a slow couple weeks with lots of people on va-ca but went to Kevin Parker (Rain Management Group) and Billy Park’s bash on the Palihouse rooftop last week – where I was late in discovering Walter (who was the host at the Chateau for 12 years) has now taken up residency at the Palihouse. He tells me he is still performing every now and then on a music night he runs in the courtyard on Tuesdays. I also saw Chris Huvane (Management 360 new hire / former GQ Senior West Coast Editor), Marc Mitchell (Harvard Westlake ’95 and founder of Urban Daddy) and Matt Waldstein (Crossroad ’95, Attorney at Law - Abrams & Waldstein LLP).

Willem Broad (Buckley, Mont Clare, Hollywood High) and his band mates Nick Biddle (Buckley) and Brandon Rauch of FIM has an “Almost Famous” party that I almost went to – which he told me involved lots of pool toys.

I hate to mention the wedding of a certain former first daughter but DJ Mia Moretti and violinist Caitlin Moe were the entertainment which is pretty cool since that is who plays about half the good parties in L.A. – including the recent Carrera party at the Chateau – so it makes me wonder if Chelsea Clinton knows what shes doing or if they somehow found themselves a very cool event planner – I need to contact BMF Media about that.

This week …

We got an invite from to a private preview of the new mall in SM called Santa Monica Place. The preview will benefit PS Arts and features the new restaurant Xino located on the “dining deck” with an after-event at the new Bloomingdale’s.

Louis Vuitton also told me a NEW LOUIS VUTTION store is also opening Friday in Santa Monica Place!!

Also got an email from Carrie Wick over at Greg Link’s new company Brand Link telling me there will be two new restaurants in the mall opening Friday as well – Richard Sandoval’s Zengo and La SandiaZengo is Chinese-Mexican (think duck tacos) and La Sandia is ”homespun Meixcan cooking” with a “tequilla library.”

RJ Williams’ (Crossroads) Young Hollywood studios located in side the Four Seasons hotel, which is still so amazing/cool/weird to me, has been getting a lot of heat lately – in a good way! That Bachelor girl who laughs too much went in yesterday – which was a good day to get her because of the finale last night. Also in the studio yesterday were Chris Angel and Giovanni Ribisi promoting his new film Middle Men - premiere is thursday at the Archlight, movie comes out Friday.

Kiehl’s is sponsoring a motorcycle ride with Fred Durst & Alain de Cadenet up the coast in the different Kielhs locations with well know biker names from around L.A. See separate post for more.

Looks like Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills is about to become cool – Ashlee Margolis is hosting a night there – co-hosts include jeweler Anita Ko, Jimmy Choo publicist Sara Riff, Ian Edelman Writer (“How to Make It in America”), and director/photographer Patrick Hoelck (who directed Scott Caan’s last film). UPDATE FROM THE EVENT: Cabanas, rustic pizzas, Prosecco surround the cute pool with an easy exit valet pick up in the back. I saw LA NATIVES  Cliff Cantor (Beverly, former pro poker player / aspiring recluse), Jesse Erhman (Crossroads, Warner Bros), Laura and brother David Katzenberg (Harvard-Westlake, “Hard Times of RJ Berger”), and Louise Roe (from The City who now has a reality show called “Plain Jane” on the CW at 9pm where she helps blah girls get not so blah guys).

Carly Steel invited me to a party for Coco Cola heir Alex Hitz – he is hosting a soiree for his friend Susan Fales-Hills to celebrate her new book “One Flight Up”. UPDATE FROM THE EVENT: Guests included Rochelle Gores Fredston (daughter of Alec Gores and owner of Arcade boutique), Wendy Stark (former editor of Vanity Fair, daughter of Ray Stark), Nikki Haskell, Barbara Davis, Marilyn Heston, Degen Pener, Pauletta Washington (Mrs. Denzel), Dale Mason Cochran (Mrs. Johnnie), Alfre Woodard, Bravo director of development Christy Dees, and Cory & Colet from ITV … Alex, who caters all his own events, has a gift for world class southern comfort cooking, had tea sandwiches & champagne; the hit hors d’oeuvre of the evening was his signature bacon wrappd dates. Alex’s family friend and guest of honor, Susan Fales-Hills, a beautiful author, Harvard grad and contributer for Vogue, Travel and Leisure and Town& Country, was on hand at the base of Alex’s outdoor infinity staircase to greet guests, graciously signing and giving away copies of her book “One Flight Up” about “a pack of feisty thirty-somethings, all friends since grade school at Sibley Academy, an Upper East Side institution for sophisticated ladies-in-training”. http://susanfales-hill.com/one-flight-up.html

Tamsin Lonsdale is having a Super Club at the Hollywood Tower – a historic landmark and residential building on Frankin and Gower. UPDATE FROM THE EVENT: Overheard among cute 1930′s striped bathing suit models, news that Richard Branson’s new production company is about to open offices in Santa Monica in his deal with Relativity Media’s Rogue Pictures. Marika Krissman tells me she has done a board over-haul as the recently inducted MOCA Contemporaries board President. Attendees include Adam Divello (creator of The Hills and The City), Sarah Weidman, VP of Development at Style Network, Tatiana Kelly & Jim Young – producers around town.

Also on for this week, Angeleno Magazine is hosting a beauty day at the new JW Marriot pool I have yet to see – but is really cool because it looks over the Staples Center downtown at the which is sort of nestled next to the towering new Ritz Carlton where Wolfgang’s new restaurant WP360 is located.

Film Fashion is having a walk-in for a new designer they rep named Gustavo Cadile this week – which is cool because you get to go in showroom which is in the bottom floor of the Pacific Design Center and they have racks and racks of samples and all the celebrities come in there to be fit. I think Film Fashion had more updates of celebs in their client’s gowns during the Oscars than any other single fashion PR.

In news from PradaT.I. wore Prada to his wedding to Tameka this past weekend in Miami. And then again at the premiere of “Takers” held at the Arclight Cinerama Dome thursday this week (Aug 04).

Rachel Krupa sent over an invite for her movie night at The London this Friday … “Love Actually” is the film.

Jessica Meisels is overseeing the opening 25 Park in the Malibu Lumber Yard this weekend. Jessica tells me the new boutique will carry cool brands like – Antik Batik, by Malene Birger, Elizabeth and James, Haute Hippie, Gryphon, Vanessa Bruno, Hanii Y, Megan Park, Sachin and Babi, Rick Owens Lillies and Duarte. They also carry baby/childrens clothes like Cacharel, Stella Cove and Eberjay. Right is Brooke Burke shopping with her little one there this week.

The Malibu Lumber Yard – owned by Richard Weintraub and Richard Sperber – are seeking an additional partner to support their investment in the mall according to the Malibu Times.

Coming up …

And Michael Rosenberg (aka Rosie) my former boss while at Maverick Films (now no longer) and producer of”Hung” has a birthday coming up …  Emmy’s, Emmy’s, Emmy’s, but not before Teen Choice monday. The Resnick Pavillion at LACMA will be complete soon with lots of parties coming in September to open the new wing.

*Every week at The Daily Truffle we highlight the invitations we receive in order to include our plans, plans of our friends and plans we wish had time for! Invitations are for editorial purposes and are not meant as announcements or open parties.

The New Melrose: Vivienne Westwood and Vanessa Bruno opening soon

Originally published Published on: Jun 16, 2010

Danish/ Parisian designer, Vanessa Bruno, has finally decided to move west to the US!! Vanessa Bruno is Parisian style in a nutshell …. simple, tailored, modern, feminine, and wearable clothes for the fille chic ! (If I were her, I would have started with NYC, because I personally feel that New Yorkers would get her style more and be better customers, HOWEVER, I love her designs (have been a fan for years) and am excited to shop !) In Europe, one of Vanessa’s popular Cabas totes sells somewhere every 30 minutes…and has blog posts titled, “Stalking Vanessa Bruno. The Store is set to open August 5th, with a fancy opening in October.

* This tote is experiencing a frenzy sort of like the Herve Chapelier or Longchamp craze that went on in Paris a bit ago.

....and yes, that is Lou Dillon on the front wall, as she is the face of Vanessa Bruno... +10 points to VB for getting L!

I wrote about Vivienne Westwood’s future store on January 9th, but I decided to include it in with the new Vanessa Bruno post ;-)

Famed eccentric fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood, is opening a store on Melrose, near Sweet Lady Jane tea house. This was interesting to me because more than half of the stores on Melrose, east of La Cinega are closing, empty, or under construction.  It is very brave of Westwood to open an expensive store in this economy, and on MelroseMrs. Westwood has won the British Fashion Council Award for best designer three times! I absolutely LOVE Vivienne Westwood, and all that she stands for, so I am looking very forward for this store to open.

Church Boutique Los Angeles: Ivy Fortress & Clubhouse where Hollywood gets dressed

My secret new hideaway, shhh dont tell, is Church Boutique at 7277 Santa Monica Boulevard. The front door (not-in-service) is shrouded by a dead end sign meant for the cul de sac cross street of Greenacre Avenue.

It’s the perfect decoy for monsters and villains who pass on by, while friends and family go ’round the back through the secret passage that leads inside the clubhouse of Rodney Burns and David Malvaney ~ partners in this discrete boutique ~ where you are welcome to have a seat, make a friend, meet a boy, pet a dog, drink a coke, charge your phone, have a laugh and watch the light pour in dusty windows like St. Peter’s cathedral all day long, somehow even when it’s dark outside.

Down this rabbit hole, you will find ~ designers from far off lands like Dutch architect Rem D. Koolhaas‘ architectural shoe line, United Nude, former Commes des Garcon pop-up store boutique mistro Brett Westfall‘s new line, and the elegant design team behind Literature Noir, Kaya B from Turkey and husband Elliot Hans, a local here from L.A., and my cousin!

Hooks and lines hold the store in place like a web of treasure from across the land. Grab on a rope and swing through time, there’s your doll house, your tricycle, your bronzed baby shoes .. and look, the there’s that Chanel number your mother use to wear!

Abandoned parachutes hang in the rafters that are reclaimed materials made into into soft and beautiful dresses, (label reads “Dress“) that billow out behind you, and with the slightest gust of wind.

Piles of pillows and over sized cow hide couches await you under the swinging racks of taffeta dresses … Reach for the rafters, tug down a gown, or bag, or shoes, or head pieces, feathers, jewels, day time, night time, anytime anything and more!

Here’s who I met:

An adorable, gorgeous 8-year-old boy playing iTouch Skeeball.

A woman who spilts her time between Florence and L.A., occupation unknown, who bought three pairs of Koolhaas’ United Nude modernistic shoes in green, white snakeskin and and gunmetal gray snakeskin (Church is the ONLY store in LA that sells this brand aside from one other store near Pico)

An interior designer, Liana Reid, who told me about a a crocodile leather farm in South Africa, 100% owner operated by aboriginal South Africans.

Russian models, travelers, shoppers, sellers, buyers, puppies, children, artists, actors, and on and on!

Go see Rodney Burns and David Malvaney, Teri & Derrick at Church Boutique at 7277 Santa Monica Boulevard, (cross street and entrance is Greenacre Avenue), West Hollywood, 323-876-8887. Mondays through Saturdays, 10am – 7pm. Closed Sunday, after all, this ain’t yo mama’s Church.

Church Boutique launches website today! http://churchboutique.com/

We went to Church to do a photo shoot with artists Jeremy Kenyon Lockyer Corbellwww.jeremycorbell.com and friend Tracy Bjelland who modeled and our own Lauren Brokaw who did the make-up and held it down!

Waris ♥ (Loves) You! ~ House of Waris jewelry party at Barneys Beverly Hills

I’m sure (or guessing) most of you know Waris Ahluwalia, actor and jewelry designer extraordinare. Waris is the definition of cool, don’t believe me?  Look up “cool” in the dictionary. You might remember Waris from the movies The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Inside Man, or Darjeeling Limited, or know him from seeing his picture at all the hottest NYC spots. Not only is he funny, kind, and an awesome jewelry designer, but he also has some seriously cool style…Who else do you know that could wear a summer knit suit with white Birkenstocks and pull it off so effortlessly? Guests drank sparkling water, wine, and champagne while eating pretty and delish finger foods; my favorite was a mini scallion pancake with a cucumber on top. Waris walked around with a handful of Waris Love’s You pins, which I thought was the cutest touch EVErrrr!
