Personal Notes from the Obama Fundraiser Los Angeles — Performance by the Foo Fighters, Speeches from President Barack Obama, Rashida Jones, Jack Black and event host Colleen Bell

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Please excuse our teeny, tiny video — we are new to video editing on an iPhone — any suggestions for great editing apps is appreciated — tips@dailytruffle.net

EXCERPT from OBAMA SPEECH:

Guests were instructed via email to arrive between 3pm and 4:3pm at 8030 Century Park West in Century City to board shuttles that would take them to the house of Colleen and Bradley Bell (who brought you soaps such as the Bold and the Beautiful, and his parents who brought you the Young and the Restless). The email also reminded guests to bring their driver’s licenses or other ID, and to dress warmly as the fundraiser was held outdoors and there was a high chance of rain and that umbrellas would not be permitted as they pose a security risk.

After parking guests met on the ground floor where they were queue up to get through a metal detector and a waved down with a handheld wand. Volunteers with click boards checked names of their lists and verified IDs off driver’s licenses and gave out green (GA) or pink wristbands (VIP). Click to Continue Reading

The Real Cost of a Beverly Hills Housewife — And it ain’t the Bravo version

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Some people wonder why the rich need so much money. There are real reason to strive for that 1% …. Things do cost money — And we’ve broken down the costs!

=======================

In honor of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills season finale and the three part reunion special spread across the past three weeks — we decided to do a little recognizance on how REAL these Beverly Hills housewives REALLY are! We gathered some of the trademark costs of Beverly Hills living from country clubs to private schools for the kids to shopping haunts to various typical memberships and basically don’t find a ton of overlap. But given as 80% of the cast doesn’t even live-in Beverly Hills, it’s no big surprise.

We  asked around to our friends in the area — skipping the gaudy, the extreme and the overly-conservative — to bring you a the status quo of annual costs to maintain a middle of the road yet wealthy lifestyle in life ‘above Sunset’. Click to Continue Reading

Ronald Reagan’s Black-List Era — Never Before Told Tales Come to Life via 75 Storage Boxes from the Home of an Old Time Hollywood Union Chief

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Ronald Reagan fights communism in Hollywood -- pics via L.A. Times & John Meroney

A new L.A. Times magazine article written by friend of the Truffle John Meroney digs up overlooked and lost memoirs on the Reagan years in Hollywood, his war against the McCarthy-era Red Scare also known as the Hollywood blacklist era, and the values that molded his presidency, including his aggressive relationship with Mikhail Gorbachev that ultimately accelerated the end of the Soviet regime. Thanks to storage boxes in former union chief Roy Brewer house, the early combativeness of communism against Hollywood’s method of communicating ideas was saved, as told through never-seen-before documents including private correspondence, speeches, congressional documents, Communist Party newspapers, transcripts of testimony from executive sessions and minutes from closed union meetings are re-making headlines from the most fascinating time in Hollywood history.

Excerpt from article: ”Recollections of Ronald Reagan’s time in Hollywood are full of myth and misinformation… The boxes held a treasure trove of private correspondence, speeches, congressional documents, Communist Party newspapers, transcripts of testimony from executive sessions and minutes from closed union meetings—the total of which provides a new view of the most enigmatic president in recent memory… The key to unlocking and understanding Reagan’s evolution was found in 75 legal-file boxes in a house … former movie-industry union chief Roy Brewer lived with his daughter and son-in-law.” L.A. Times [LINK]

Along with the boxes untroved, John Meroney also made a 6 minute mini-film to accompany it. It has remarkable audio recordings that have been under wraps for decades of Ronald Reagan explaining his adamacy against the commmunist movement as it affected Hollywood. [LINK]

RED CARPET; Who Wore What [LIVE]
Obsessed with Adele‘s custom Armani gown! Best she has ever looked — also wearing Louboutin heels. Not hating Fergie in Jean Paul Gaultier (usually can’t stand her outfits). Katy Perry in Elie Saab, eh. Nicki Minaj entered the Grammy’s in a red caped dress by Versace with a Pope…Ok. Not gonna lie — I was hoping she’d come in with  Sophia Grace and Rosey — but the two little ones were following close behind in pink tutus. Taylor Swift in Zuhair Murad. Ms. Riri aka Rihanna in Armani. Kelly Osbourne looks good in Tony Ward, Giuseppe Zanotti heels, and Pomellato jewels. Luv Jessie J‘s Julien Macdonald dress … v Grammy-appropriate & great for someone whose choices aren’t usually great. And WOW … Paris Hilton actually has a very gorg dress on by Basil Soda! #surprised. Alicia Keys and Rihanna are wearing the same Christian Louboutin pumps … :)  Snooki is wearing BeBe; how fitting! Jared, Nathan, and Caleb Followill (to die for) aka Kings of Leon are all in head to toe Gucci – including wifey Lily Aldridge! Gwyneth Paltrow in Stella McCartney, and … of course last but not least — Lady Gaga in custom Versace.

PERFORMERS
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Paul McCartney with Diana Krall, Deadmau5, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Rihanna + Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Chris Brown, The Beach Boys with Maroon 5 and Foster The People, Adele, and a late addition of Jennifer Hudson for the Whitney Houston tribute.

HOW IT WORKS
Peers vote for peers in the Recording Academy much like the Academy awards and the Oscars. Arrivals are dropped off on L.A. Live Drive and 11th Street just east of the 110 freeway. The red carpet opens at 3pm even though the ‘pre-telecast’ starts at 1pm. The vast amount of the awards are handed out at a slow pace through out the day during the pre-telecast — only about 10 awards are handed out during the actual show you will see on CBS at 8pm. ie. Skrillex and Adele have already won three Grammys awards by 5pm when the main show the world will watch tonight on CBS begins — and then CBS won’t air it until 8pst. Other winners so far include Kanye West, and Amy Winehouse whose parent accepted an award on her behalf.

“We Need to Talk About Pomellato!” — Tilda Swinton hosts Italian Jeweler Pomellato Grand Opening on Rodeo Drive benefiting MOCA

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Pomellato struck publicity gold when they joined forces with We Need to Talk About Kevin star, Tilda Swinton. The cutting edge fashion icon has been making the rounds on the awards season party circuit, and also all the talk shows … andddd countless premieres and screenings for her film — and she’s been spotted topped off with Pomellato jewels every step of the way! A grand move also to those in the fashion universe who have come to see Tilda as a fashion leader. Though not nominated for an Oscar, up until the January 24th Oscar nominations announcement, she was a serious contender and still she has had enough face time in the press to make her a household name. Her recent walk on the SAG red carpets for Sunday’s show at the Shrine, where she wore a white Lanvin dress with a Pomellato ‘Tango’ brown topaz ring, came back to back with Monday night’s Pomellato grand opening on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

The store has been open for several months, complete with pocket doors and all, but the grand opening was held off until yesterday. MOCA also teamed with Pomellato to bring in some of their friends, collectors and members of the MOCA Contemporaries to see and celebrate the jewels.

Here’s who we saw: Pomellato brand ambassador and actress Tilda Swinton (whore Lanvin again topped with Pomellato jewels) with her boyfriend and artist Sandro Kopp, Pomellato CEO Andrea Morante, Pomellato president Guglielmo Melegari, actor Billy Zane (Zoolander, Titantic), artist Ed Moses with Lauren King, Loree Rodkin, Carol Cheng-Meyer from Bel-Air Capital, Christine and Gabe Chiu, Malibu-based collectors Cindy & Tony Canzoneri along with their darling dog ”Romeo”, Wallis Annenberg, Maria Bell, MOCA director Jeffrey Detich and several MOCA donors and members of MOCA Contemporaries, photog Jeff Burton, interior designer Oliver M. Furth, collector Eugene Sadovoy, CAA agent Thao Nguyen, art adviser and collector Karyn Lovegrove, 60s fashion icon Peggy Moffitt, artist Rosson Crow with a fabulous black rose headpiece, Abby Bangser of the LACMA Avant-Garde, Marilyn Heston whose PR firm MHA Media represents Pomellato and organzied the event, Click to Continue Reading

In a resolution that ends a story that arguably started years ago, WME has reportedly been ordered to pay somewhere between $20-30M in damages for the leasing fiasco regarding the 6-story office building over on Beverly Drive - Nikki Finke

It’s official - Hillary Rush is leaving LA for the East to set up shop in the Berkshires. Sales in LA will run throughout February and the last store will be fully packed up by March – with everything else shifting to web until the Berkshire store officially opens.

ENTERTAINMENT

Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning have both signed on as clients with WME (see image right).

It has also been announced that the Bridesmaids cast, including Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, will present at the 84th Academy Awards.

Other talent announcements include the cast of “Lovelace” which will include Sarah Jessica Parker (who will replace Demi Moore), Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard (Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedmen to direct).

P. Diddy has announced he has teamed up with old-time MTV programmer Andy Schuon to produce Revolt which will offer simply music news and music- like the MTV of old. Comcast will distribute and the current plan is to launch on 12/12/12. via Perez Hilton

The advertising world has taken extreme to new heights by posting a teaser for an ad. Yes, an advertisement teaser. Fortunately, it seems like the ad will feature Matthew Broderick in a homage to his role as Ferris Bueller. Say what you want about a teaser for an ad, but if it involves Bueller it’s hard to be mad. Let’s just hope Broderick, who, at 44, is clearly not the sweet teenage child he once was, won’t instantly age us viewers and remind us of our own crows feet. – NY Mag

A little side note from Sundance on the new West Memphis Three documentaries

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Although there were many points of interest at this year’s Sundance, the most fascinating and moving element was hands-down the new Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) produced documentary about the West Memphis Three which is directed by Amy Berg (who won an Oscar for her preist-molestation film Deliver Us from Evil in 2006) and is titled: West of Memphis. Moreover, the biggest star of Sundance, and biggest shock was one of the West Memphis Three, Damien Echols, who came along with Peter Jackson and several of the parents of the murdered boys that led to his possibly false imprisonment and death sentence in the 90s. Damien was joined in Sundance with his wife whom he met and married while on death row. The doc is aptly timed with the release of the West Memphis Three from prison this past August although it’s been in the works for ages. Peter was also with his wife who co-produced the film- the couple has been providing financial and public support for the defense since seeing Joe Berlinger’s 1996 documentary Paradise Lost for HBO about the case. The situation is only going to get bigger and bigger, as Berlinger’s follow up in a series of three HBO documentaries, “Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory,” was just nominated for an Oscar yesterday.

UPDATE (February 1, 2012): Deadline Hollywood is reporting Colin Firth has signed on to join Reese Witherspoon to co-star in Devil’s Knot, based on investigative reporter Mara Leveritt’s 2003 book Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, to be directed by Atom Egoyan (The Exorcism Of Emily Rose). Colin will play private investigator Ron Lax who offered his services for free to the defendents in 1993 and who helped find the DNA in the knots that bound one of the victims that cast suspicion on the stepfather of one of the 8-year old murdered boys. Filming begins next summer in Louisiana, and other big names are expected to join the cast in smaller roles.

Pre-Golden Globes Wella Beauty Bar

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

A Braid Bar in WeHo ?! Gittt out … Why is this so hard? The service takes 15 minutes, costs $25 ($40 with shampoo) and there are a million different braids to pick from. Our friends at BMF Media, Domain and LFB Media Group banned together to bring celebs, influencers and press to the Wella Beauty Bar pop up lounge at NINE | ZERO | ONE salon — a permanent salon located in a castle-esque building off Santa Monica Blvd in what was once a library in L.A.’s early days.

The braid bar is a permanent amenity at the salon, but temporary sponsors also came in for the two day event such as Fake Bake tanning, shelves full of Schick Quattro for Women and Bio-Oil (known to prevent scarring if you apply the cream at the time of the scratch), a photo booth, UV Vodka (and UV Vodka cupcakes) and catering from the Little Door Next Door. We also noticed a major sponsor was the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau which is kind of amazing, no? We just heard they are sponsoring some things in Sundance as well which begins this Thursday, January 19th. Another sponsor of note was Teleflora, owned by Lynda & Stewart Resnick, who built the new wing at LACMA last year — aptly named the Resnick Pavillion. (They also literally have an orchard at their Sunset Blvd home in Beverly Hills (specifically a pomegranate orchard which is semi in relation to their other company POM which makes pomegranate juice — we put a picture of their house down below)).

#TruffleNotes: Wella was started as a wigs and hairpiece company in the late 1800s but by the time the 1900s rolled around, wigs were no longer in fashion so they started trying to invent ways to permanently add waves to hair and thus created the ‘perm’ — see a pic of their first perming machine down below!  Click to Continue Reading

The Auto Gallery x McLaren Showroom Grand Opening in Beverly Hills [SLIDESHOW, VIDEOS]

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

To introduce McLaren’s new road car, the MP4-12C, to LA’s top car collectors and enthusiasts, British exotic automaker has partnered with The Auto Gallery to open a dealership in Beverly Hills, and hosted a grand opening to draw LA’s car world to the new showroom. The MP4-12C is McLaren’s first road vehicle since their collaboration with Mercedes Benz to produce the  McLaren Mercedes SLR. McLaren CEO Ron Dennis, based in London, flew in to explain this to the crowd which included: Bruce Meyer – who has one of the largest car collections in L.A. and founded the 1199 Foundation, David Sydorick – board member of Petersen Museum’s Checkered Flag Club whose car collection is easily worth 100M, Jay Leno – who keeps many cars from his vast collection stored in the Petersen vault, Ron Burkle – local billionaire and current resident of Greenacres estate, and car collectors Tonya & Jim Hull who live in Malibu and are also a part of the Checkered Flag Club. Also at the party, Mark Alfano — who runs Michael Hammer’s car collection (now based in Montecito since Michael moved it from his Culver City building which he now rents to RM Auctions for their space … Mark was en route to Las Vegas for a motorcycle auction and then the Scottsdale car auction which will set the tone for the rest of the car auction for the entire year — he will be looking for new additions for Michael’s collection). #TruffleNotes: Michael Hammer is Amie Hammer’s dad!

Also not to be excluded from the list of attendees was Philippe Cousteau — the grandson of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, with his girlfriend E! News host Ashlan Gorse and Gorse’ publicist Zack TanckAmber Cohen — avid car enthusiast Checkered Flag member, Ron Giger — genreal manager of the The Auto Gallery, Alan Johnson – current president of the historic L.A. Tennis Club who personally oversaw club renovations in 2010 with wife Kristina Johnson, , Dr. Gabriel & Christine Chiu, Tony Schwartz – co-founder of The Auto Gallery, investor Tyson ParkNick Frankel of My Yacht Monaco, Malibu resident Hines who has the lock on distributing Gemballa for Porsche in North American, ex-Beverly Hills Ferrari manager Bryant Kreaden who now runs Beverly Hills Astin Martin, and McDreamy aka Patrick Dempsey, or as I like to say Ronnie Miller. Rooney Mara Golden Globes dress 2012 & a tally of hers awards season looks

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Rooney Mara in Nina Ricci pre-fall 2012 at the Golden Globes on January 15, 2012

Alright so we’ve been seriously annoyed because our Truffle Hunters were really out to lunch on who has been styling Rooney Mara but we can now thank The Hollywood Reporter for breaking this very important news — according to a late breaking article last night — the stylist’s name is Ryan Hastings (who also does Mia Wasakowska, FYI) and PS — he does not do interviews. #amazing

The Mara’s are having a REALLY good year with lots of wins for Rooney’s granddad, uncle and all her other relatives who own football teams …

#TruffleNotes: Her paternal grandfather, Wellington Mara, was the long-time co-owner of the Giants, succeeded by her uncle, John Mara. Her maternal grandfather, Tim Rooney, has run Yonkers Raceway in Yonkers, New York since 1972.[8] Mara is the great-granddaughter of both Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney, Sr. and New York Giants founder Tim Mara.[9] Her great-uncle, Dan Rooney, is chairman of the Steelers, the United States Ambassador to Ireland, and the co-founder of The Ireland Funds charitable organization. — via Wikipedia

And she is basically set for life in every way imaginable with the Lisbeth Salander thing and all. We liken her to several other Hollywood starlets and soon-to-be-starlets with vast family ties and to rival their talent (next on our watch list is Léa Seydoux, the pretty little actress from Midnight in Paris (she plays the sales girl on the Quai) and Mission Impossible and upcoming Haywire — and oh yeh, she was also in Inglourious Basterds, and is the face of Prada’s new fragrance and their 2012 Resort line, and … wait for it … her grandfather is the chairman of Pathe which owns everything in France having to do with Cable, satellite and cinema).

We first met the Roon at the L.A. premiere of Tanner Hall (Francesca Gregorini and Tatiana von Furstenberg’s movie) in Los Feliz and thought it was interesting she was about to become the biggest thing on the planet — more so that her sister Kate we took notice of several years before … And of course we noticed she looked really good in clothes. So, we’ve been keeping tally of Rooney’s awards season looks and will continue to track and guestimate her next move for you here …

Weekly Juice — McLaren Grand Beverly Hills grand opening tonight, Trousdale closing, there’s a new Grace Kelly film, Honor Fraser can levitate, CES begins in Vegas

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Set up for the McLaren party tonight

Tonight marks their grand opening of the new McLaren Beverly Hills showroom — we’ve been eyeing their new Wilshire location for over a year now, as they’ve been prepping the store. As one of the only McLaren dealers in North America, this new showroom is part of the Auto Gallery network in L.A. who also have dealerships for Porsche, Maserati, Ferrari and Lamborghini. Some friends of the Truffle happened to be shopping at McLaren last night and sent in this pic of the party set-up. Tonight they will host a presentation and after party for Auto Gallery former and prospective clients — so basically the entire L.A. car community.

Here’s something: Trousdale is closing this week … the lounge has been open for 22 months (March 2010 — Jan 2012) which in L.A. club years is like being 160. Trousdale’s closing party will be held later on this week.

#TruffleNotes: most LA clubs have a planned 18 months lifespan

Honor Fraser can levitate

Apparently former model and LA gallery owner Honor Fraser can levitate. We were at the opening of her latest art show on Saturday night where she was hanging quite literally in her office for hours, 8 ft up.

There’s a Grace Kelly film coming! ‘Grace Of Monaco’ — Olivier Dahan (La Vie En Rose) is set to helm this rather overdue biopic — according to Nikki Finke — The film covers a half-year period in 1962 when French leader Charles De Gaulle and Monaco’s Prince Rainier III were at odds over Monaco’s standing as a tax haven. France gave Monaco six months to reform its tax laws, and the situation escalated. By that time, Kelly (then 33) had given up her acting career to become a full-time princess, and the film details her political maneuvering behind the scenes to save Monaco. VERY excited to follow the casting for this film!

Here’s a name you’ll start hearing — We recently met actor Geoff Stults at the Churchill (new place on 3rd) over the holidays and have some notes: He dated Stacy Keibler for two years, is starring in the new Bones spin-off called The Finder (premieres this Thursday on Fox) and plays a fixer of sorts who finds bad guys.

Jake Gyllenhaal is now with Patrick Whitesell at WME

International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) started yesterday — it runs til Friday in Las Vegas
