If Pockets Talked x Milk Boutique on 3rd — Month long vintage pop up — Buy and Sell

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

For those of us staying in town this Thanksgiving weekend, might we suggest spending your Black Friday on 3rd Street perusing the new deliveries to Milk boutique? A vintage pop-up inside the shop is bringing you some new vêtements to choose from via Masha Gordon’s re-sell site If Pockets Talked …

It was quite the L.A. alumni scene at the launch party for this collaboration between Masha and Milk owners Bari Milken Bernstein and Marni Flans. All three girls are L.A. natives and as natives like to represent, we saw support from all their alma maters and a few others — Cossroads, Beverly, Brentwood, Buckley and HW – along with fashion publicists, bloggers, designers, DJs, and husbands of the ladies. We all remember, regardless of age, when Clueless came out and everyone ran to Contempo Casuals and Rampage for all the new trends at cheap prices.  Well unfortunately, the Beverly Center has been in a slow decline to it’s death ever since.

Helena Christensen hosted Odd Molly flagship store opening last night on Robertson

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Lots of distractions for the over capacity crowd who queued up for the U.S. flagship opening of the Sweden based clothing brand Odd Molly, hosted by Helena Christensen last night on Robertson….was it the lure of musical guests Fabrizio Moretti and Binki Shapiro of Little Joy?

or the close proximity to Heidi Klum and some of the contestants from Models of the Runway shooting an episode amidst racks of boho inspired frocks?

Regardless, guests, including cutie Lily Collins, Greta Gerwig(co star in just released film Greenberg),Lake Bell and Lydia Hearst seemed quite content wrestling for elbow room sipping champy, chomping on skewered snacks…

Coco de Mer’s Alice in Wonderland “Tease” Party | 10% off to Daily Truffles reader

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

For those of you who are not familiar with the discreet atlieir on the best part of Melrose Avenue, tucked a stone’s throw East of Balenciaga and Alberta Ferretti, a trip to Coco de Mer is more akin  to going to Savile Row for a bespoke hunting suit rather than a trip to the Pleasure Chest.

In honor of Tim Burton’s new movie Alice in Wonderland – Coco de Mer has thoroughly decked the store with an Alice in Wonderland mad hatter “tease” party.

Mannequins in La Perla bras and Stella McCartney panties, lounge in the store-front windows with their high heels kicked into stacks of over-sized tea cups. White tights cover tipped-upside-down plastique legs with black Mary Janes on one end and baby-blue aprons and white tulle tutus on the other. Bunnies, green grass, and Easter eggs complete the table displays.

Coco de Mer’s ever-discrete philosophy is known well through-out the world. The dressing rooms are confessionals that were bought at auction and flown in from Europe where they were once housed in beautiful chapels and cathedrals. The doubled sided changing rooms leave the lady in privacy but allow her man to wait next door with a lock-from-her-side window so he can peak and peruse at her discretion. The men’s side is equipped with films, a TV and hand-crafted, old-fashion typewriter, should he decide to take a note!

Despite their no camera/no press policy to help protect the privacy of their rather luminous L.A.clientele, they do allow The Daily Truffle in anytime to sneak a few shots for our readers. While some find it offensive, others are happy to be told of this sophisticated and well-done parlor.

The store is named for a very rare and quite extraordinary seed found in only two islands in world, both in the Seychelles. The coco de mer seed is the largest seed in the world, weighing up to 40 pounds, and has a distinct and uncanny resemblance to the female form.

Coco de Mer opts to support local artisans and since Los Angeles is one of the wealthiest cities in the world, the store ends up packed with home grown fragrances, candles and more sexy items from some of The Daily Truffle’s most favorite luminous locals. The store is also able to pull stock from their London location to bring us lingerie from some of their English society designers like Stella McCartney’s lingerie.

Coco de Mer store-front mad Hatter "tease" party!

Coco de Mer is giving all The Daily Truffle readers 10% off when they shop in the store on all non-sale items ~ mention The Daily Truffle when you are there!

And for one lucky shopper they will gift a complementary JimmyJane white rabbit (pictured below) in honor of the festive Alice in Wonderland season!

Vivienne Westwood to open store on Melrose Ave !

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Vivienne Westwood

Famed eccentric fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood, is opening a store on Melrose Place, near Sweet Lady Jane tea house.

This was very ironic to me because more than half of the stores on Melrose Place, east of La Cinega are closing, empty, or under construction.  It is very brave of Westwood to open an expensive store in this economy, and on Melrose Place.

Mrs. Westwood has won the British Fashion Council Award for best designer three times !

I absolutely LOVE Vivienne Westwood, so I am looking very forward for this store to open!

The deets on Vivenne

68 years old, born April 8th, 1941

Born in Tintwistle, England

Taught at a primany school in North London

Went to the University of Westminster and Middlesex University

Married to Derek Westwood and Andreas Kronthaler

Dated Malcolm McLarren, manager of The Sex Pistols, and had Joseph Corre, owner of Agent Provacateur with him

Has 4 kids

Malcolm opened a shop at 430 King’s Road called Let It Rock (also known as Sex, Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die, Seditionaries).

It was at this time Westwood began to sell her crazy designs.

Westwood still owns this store, called Worlds End, where she sells her lower priced line, Anglomania.

The English Punk style became popular when the Sex Pistols wore clothes from Westwood and McLaren’s shop at their first concert.

This “punk style” included bondage gear, safety pins, razor blades, bicycle or lavatory chains on clothing and spiked dog collars for jewelry, as well as outrageous make-up and hair

Vivienne has 5 stores worldwide

Carrie’s wedding dress from the Sex in the City movie was made by Westwood.

Orange-ish hair is her trademark look

Mrs. Westwood is also a major major political activist

Has arrived to get her OBE (Order of the British Empire award) knickerless, twice !

Rodarte + Target = Tomorrow !

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Ro-dar-te for Tar-jay

So, tomorrow is the day that Sabrina and I have been waiting for.  I’ve been anxiously checking the Target website every ten minutes, to see if they have uploaded the clothes for purchase.. It is 9:18 pm here so 12:18 a.m. NYC time, which means that it is December 20th, 2009. (My keyboard will be doing over time tonight, so tomorrow I shall give it a break.)

All of this hype and commotion started with…..

August 5th, 2009 Target announced that Rodarte would be there next designer for the Go International division.  Laura and Kate Mulleavy, Rodarte, have decided on 55 pieces which will include everything from high waist tights, holiday dresses, lacy cardigans, fax fur, to knee highs, belts, jean jackets, and much much more! The prices range from 10-80 $.

I hope they look like this tomorrow !

I hope they look like this tomorrow !

The collection incorporates a rich mix of patterns and fabrications and everything from sequins and bows to faux fur. The key with Rodarte is layering,” said Target spokesperson Joshua Thomas.

I wanted to white this girls face out a la Perez Hilton

I wanted to white this girls face out in the style of Perez Hilton

“Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte bring a couture sensibility to the GO International program with an acute eye for detail and appreciation for craftsmanship,” said Trish Adams, senior vice president, Target. “We are excited to share their extraordinary talent with our guests, providing off-the-runway fashion at unbeatable prices.”

The most interesting aspect of this collection for me, is how they drew inspiration from the movies Rosemary’s Baby, Harold and Maude, and Bonnie and Clyde.  I have always been surprised why more designers haven’t taken inspiration from Mia Farrow or Ruth Gordon’s characters in Rosemary’s Baby.  I LOVE these movies and adore the designs in each film!  (I do not think this is the time or the place to discuss my love for Roman Polansky, Director of Rosemary’s Baby.)

Love her or hate her, random tween internet sensation Tavi Gevinson, had a part in this partnership: Being the muse for the collection, attending the official shoot, filming an interview with the Mulleavy sisters, and having a dedicated page in Teen Vogue, about the relationship between the threesome.

Kate and Laura are LA natives… kinda.. The girls are from Pasadena, Ca.  Kate was born February 11th, 1979, and Laura was born August 31st, 1980. Both girls received liberal arts degrees from the University of California, Berkely in 2001.  Laura and Kate went to New York in February of 2005, with 10 hand sewn pieces.  A few days after the sisters had been in New York, they were on the February 3rd, 2005 cover of Women’s Wear Daily. And as they say, the rest was history..

Chances are you have seen Rodarte on the cover of a major international publication, as it has graced the covers of over 20 !

To name just a few accolades and awards: June 2006 and 2007 led to nominations for CFDA Swarovski Emerging Womenswear Designer award.  In June of 2008, Rodarde was awarded the CFDA Swarovski Emerging Womenswear Designer award and this year, they were chosen to win the CFDA Womenswear designer of the Year.

rodarte lovers

I haven’t bought anything recently from these designer collaborations (thumbs down), but I have an amazing jacket from the Erin Fetherston Target line and a few things from the Luella Bartley collection that I heart.

The annoying thing about this situation is that it is supposed to come out everywhere on December 20th, 2009…. not come out everywhere but LA before the 20th.  According to Racked LA, the Rodarte for Target know it alls, the Target in Eaglerock, CA had received the whole shipment on December 8th and sold out. New York and San Francisco had Target to Go pop up shops last week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m, in which one could select a few pieces from the collection, and pick it up wrapped a few minutes later.

Map of kinda local Target locations

I just spoke with friend, fashion lover, and former friend from college, Megan Perez.  She just informed me that the collection arrived in Dallas yesterday, December 18th, 2009. Noooo faiirrrr !!!! I’m going to have a tantrum any minute, be lucky you don’t have to witness it.  Megan bought the leopard dress with the bows on the back and said that it fit well because she has an hour glass body and the skirts style is body con.  I have not seen or heard anyone talk about Rodarte making swimwear for this collab, but Megan told me that there are different styles, mostly boho chic.  Ms. Perez is going to go back for the mustard colored cardigan and a few accessories.

This dress has bows on the back !

Megan bought this dress, the back has bows !

Why is it LA the last to receive this collection? Grrr.

Rodarte is available in LA at Opening Ceremony, Rodarte, Maxfields, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and elsewhere at Kirna Zabete, Jeffrey, Dover Street Market, Collette, Harvey Nichols, Ikram, Bergdorf Goodman, Holt Renfrew, 10 Corso Como, etc.

Rodarte for Target will be available (I hope sometime tonight) at Target.com

Decadestwo Chanel December 2009 event in Los Angeles

Decadestwo, the Hollywood luxury retailer specializing in pre-owned 21st-century designer clothing and accessories (not vintage), is hosting their 6th annual CHANEL® event at their Melrose Avenue store on December 8–9. This year, Decadestwo has acquired their largest collection ever of pre-loved CHANEL clothing, handbags and accessories. A private shopping day and reception on Dec. 8 offers a first look at the merchandise while raising money for Beyond Shelter, the non-profit organization that supports homeless families in Los Angeles. An open invitation has been extended December 9, from 10AM-7PM.

This haute-couture event will feature hundreds of CHANEL® items from the late 90’s to 2009, including classic quilted CHANEL® handbags, jewelry and jackets among other pieces – all collected by Decadestwo from the world’s best closets!  CHANEL® always makes for the best investment pieces, made even more in vogue with the buzz around the recent film, CoCo Before Chanel.  CHANEL® is very protective of the use of their name and image, and, as Decadestwo is not an authorized retailer of CHANEL® products, this is therefore considered an event, not a sale!

Phillip Lim's spring line hits LACMA

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Editor’s Note: I was just emailed this great piece from Erin Anadkat at The Chic Leak, Los Angeles magazine, and wanted to re-post. Stay tuned on The Daily Truffle as we follow the tital wave of art/fashion/entertainment merger in L.A., the Gallerinas (those in that scene), and the Galleratti (the scene itself).

=========================================================

dressesLos Angeles Magazine the chic leak“Clothes are not art. They’re to get dirty in,” said Philip Lim to a nearly full audience in the Bing Theatre last Wednesday. “They’re to cry and laugh in, and have experiences.” Still, the L.A.-bred designer, who now works in New York, accepted LACMA’s Costume Council invitation to show a video of his Spring 2010 collection and a few real pieces from it on mannequins in this museum setting. The setting was apt. This collection, which will start arriving in stores in January, was in part inspired by Picassos that Lim had seen in New York’s Gagosian gallery. That, and the collapse of the financial markets. “I was trying to find new answers,” said Lim. Some of the garments were collage-like styles in monochromatic neutral colors.

Robertson Boulevard’s new makeover: Love or Hate it?

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Robertson Boulevard is growing right before our eyes ! Is this for better or for worse?? If you haven’t been by paparazzi row aka. Robertson Blvd. recently you are in for a surprise (not sure wether this a good or bad one). Let me break it down:

Agnes B was the first store to move off this famous street, Shortly after, an avalanche of new stores opened and older stores closed.

American Apparel, Madison, and Diavolina have all moved out of their former spaces to different locations on Robertson and Third Street in the past few months.

All Saints, from England, opened doors to their first store in the United States today and will be adding a Malibu store in the next few months. This is the former space of Agnes B. ADDRESS: 100 North Robertson

Splendid on Robertson is the first actual Splendid store in the world. The full Splendid line will be available here: Splendid Mills, Splendid Mills Jr., Splendid Girl, Splendid Littles, and the main collection, Splendid. ADDRESS: 111 South Robertson

Moods of Norway has made its home in the old Madison boutique; This is the US flagship for this company. ADDRESS: 113 South Robertson

Beach Bunny swimwear wants you to look hot in bikini, they are not opened yet, but will be ready for business soon. ADDRESS: 136 South Robertson

North of Melrose and Robertson is home to the new and beautifully designed Christian Louboutin LA flagship store. Across the street there is a 3.1 Phillip Lim store; Danger, Danger ! If you are ever in a rush and need a whole outfit, this is your street !!! ADDRESS: CL, 247 South Robertson Blvd.., PL, 631 N. Robertson Blvd.

In the past two years, Robertson has welcomed Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Dolce and Gabbana, Rock and Republic, Vince, The now closed David Alexander, True Religion, Reiss, Intermix, and Seven Jeans. I laughed when I heard that Seven Jeans and Rock in Republic were being built right across the street from each other and True Religion down the street… Way to put pressure on the customer buying jeans !
Les Habitudes, The Ivy, Maxfield’s, Cuvee (best food in the area; Yes, I like it more than The Ivy), and Curve aren’t going to leave us high and dry anytime soon. Kitson, with four boutiques on two blocks, is still alive and kicking.

Pop Ups – The future of shopping?

A few smart retailers have started to open different “Pop Up” stores around LA. This idea is great for a company that wants to showcase their diffusion line, or who cannot fully invest in the real estate, due to the economy.

No stranger to collaborations, Stella McCartney, has paired with Gap to house a Baby Gap/ Gap Kids store on Robertson, next to Intermix. Stella has already guest starred for such brands as H&M and Adidas. Prices range from $14-$128. ADDRESS: 108 North Robertson Blvd.

The inspiration behind the Carousel of Hope Ball, Dana Davis, has a pop up shoe store on Melrose Place, the former Lambertston Truex. Dana, A LA Native, has had many problems with being able to find the right shoes after having many surgeries on her feet, which have been affected heavily by her diabetes. She has come up with a vast line of fashionable shoes that are comfortable and that can be worn for hours. This pop up closes December 3rd. ADDRESS: 8459 Melrose Place

Rachel Pally, Queen of the jersey dress, has finally enlightened us with her first store (It’s just a pop up, but we will take what we can get from her). She will be there once a week to meet customers and offer helpful fashion advice. ADDRESS: 465 South La Brea

I’m sure I will have more stores to report on, as Melrose past La Cinega currently has eight or so store’s for lease….

Dear Topshop, if you can hear me, Pleaseeee GET YOURSELF TO Los Angeles !!! Thanks, Lauren :)

Mameg & Maison Martin Margiela store party in Beverly Hills!

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

My friends are Barons. That basically makes me better than you. Alright fine – so technically you can buy the title of Baron and Baroness now a days … but what’s in a title anymore, anyway? Though Dutchess and Czarina have a nice ring to them … Anyway – my friend The Baron, called me late Friday to congratulate me on yet another phenomenal day of typos and blogging, and to invite me to an art show at the back-to-back stores … Mameg & Maison Martin Margiela.

The Sparklets water truck exterior, located next to the Pennisula in Beverly Hills, was once an old church and is now home to Margiela while Mameg is housed on the backside of the building – the two stores are connected by a ground floor tunnel. Margiela is so fashion forward – it’s likely to see a three armed coat or a cookie-shaped sweatshirt when you walk in. Their white washed wood floors are actually prints, there is organ music throughout and shop-keepers wear whitemedical coats.

Best quote of the night was when Desa (aka Desanka Fasiska, formerly of Desanka and now designnig for “Of Two Minds”) said in response to my relentless bantor of extreme humor … “Ahaha, ahaha, Caroline! I ‘like’ you so much!” Where is the LOVE Desa!?

Desa is my new best friend – starting now. Why you ask? She is cool, we went to Beverly together, kicked it at Centruy City together – when it was important to do so, she knows everyone I know, she is hot, her friends are hot, and what really sealed the deal is I just found out she has an obsession with octopuses. Octopuie. Octopus, plural.

Back to the party … in the courtyard sat a very spiritual harp, harmonica, drum, flute, pipe player whose wife had catered the whole event with shiny vegatables and stews coming fresh from the pot. She also prepared an unusual chocolate dish laid in front of her music playing partner. We were instructed to go and accept the offering as a symbol of community. Attendees also included Caradoc Ehrenhalt, L.A. Native/Designer Jasmine Shokrian, who sells her line at Margiela, and the husband/ wife design team Clayton and Flavi of Cerre. Also present was L.A. Native photographer Brigitte Sire.

FROM LA TIMES: Davis was inspired to create her line of ultra-comfortable shoes when she was having trouble standing for long periods of time due to foot pain caused by her diabetes. She and her family have raised over $75 million for diabetes research, with the Carousel of Hope ball fund-raiser being founded in her honor. She developed a shoe with an orthotic sole that’s as cushion-y as any Easy Spirit, but far more fashionable. In fact, Davis has figured out how to increase the heels on pumps to almost 6 inches, while still maintaining the comfort of the built-in orthotic. Those heels will be offered for spring and are sure to be seen on any celebrity who cares about comfort while walking the red carpet.

Judith Leiber Store Opening on Rodeo Drive

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

L.A. Native and friend Ashlee Margolis killed it last with a huge celebrity turn out at the new Judith Leiber store opening on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. She threw the party along with Judith Leiber’s PR team and their New York PR agency, Company Agenda. Fellow LA Natives in attendance: jewelry designer Anita Ko, Daniel Landver, CEO for Lucas Design, actress Paula Patton (Harvard Westlake), Jessica Capshaw (Harvard Westlake ’94), Desiree Kohan (Beverly Hills High), owner of chic boutique Des Kohan, and The A Lists’ Candice Tab who grew up in Malibu. Other Angelenos we love included Cameron Silver (Decades on Melrose), Ashley Paige (bikini designer), Negar Ali (stylist) and Chris Huvane. Other celebrities included Ginnifer Goodwin, Amber Valletta, Katie Cassidy, Gabrielle Union, Jenna Dewan, Anne Heche and Sanaa Lathan. Also in attendance were uber-stylists to the stars Jessica Pastor, Penny Lovell, Tanya Gill, Wendi Ferreira, Tara Sweenen and Vincent Boucher. I also saw Brooke Davenporte, Kathy + Rick Hilton, designer Magda Berliner, celebrity hair stylist Anthony Francis, and shoe designers Jerome C. Rousseau and Taryn Rose.

I was ecstatic to get an invite as Judith Leiber was something I grew up being taught was a life necessity!! My mother use to buy me the mini JL coin purses every time she would walk through Neiman Marcus in search of a new bag. I am always excited to find myself growing into my mother’s Maude Frisson shoes and in this case – her Judith Leiber accessories.

Following store openings in New Dehli, India and Dubai, UAE, last week, long time bag and belt maker Judith Leiber joined the ranks of Rodeo Drive storefronts opening their first ever Beverly Hills boutique across from the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on via Rodeo.

Judith Leiber’s crystal minaudières are a well-recognized hit on red carpets and white table clothes at parties. The fall bags are now out and are inspired by the 70′s and Art Deco. The new designs feature square silhouettes for the “Wrap Clutch” and “Rectangle,” held by Paula Patton (above). To show off the bags this fashion week, Judith Leiber collaborated with designer Cho Cheng who featured the handbags on the runway at Bryant Park this month with his SS10 line. Cho Cheng is a secret treasure of the couture set - Cheng inherited his love of fashion from his grandmother, Betty Char-Nuis Yan, the acclaimed couturier who founded the famed Betty Couture at the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong in 1960. The Cho Cheng show was opened by socialite & model Lydia Hearst and closed by fav-model-of-the-moment Coca Rocha.

Special services at the Beverly Hills store will include personal shopping and as always – complimentary repairs. My mother made it a point to tell me when I started writing this post that she still brings her belts and bags in to have the jewels replaced and leather polished up and they are always happy to do so at no cost! Judith Leiber President, Mary Gleason, says “Judith Leiber is the bag of choice for style setters, First Ladies, and royalty.”I’d like to think so – the collectible handbags are part of the permanent design collections in my mother’s wardrobe as well as The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Smithsonian Institute.
