What: 20th annual Elton John Oscar party
When: Night of the Oscars!
Where: Pacific Design Center (in a massive tent out front)

Another Academy Awards evening at Sir Elton John’s Oscar Party … This year, I took along Jessica Nagel (publicist for J. Mendel), Flo Fulton (President of Events at Nike Communications) who flew in from New York, and a couple others —  all clad in J. Mendel including myself — of course I wanted to represent since I sit on the Board of Directors for J. Mendel and what better place to wear one of Gilles’ [Gilles Mendel, heir apparent and designer of J. Mendel] beautiful gowns. We had a running joke all evening that we were the J. Mendel table.

#TruffleNotes: Being a ‘Grand Benefactor’ at the Elton John party gets you a table for 10 and 2 passes to Jeffrey Katzenberg’s Night Before party

Relativity Media Post Oscar Party — Waffles, Check-Points, and more

With a call time that read ‘Eleven O’Clock Until Sunrise’, the check point upon confirmation of your RSVP was revealed to be the DGA building on Sunset Blvd.

A completely organized group of 300+ guests parked on the second floor of the DGA parking lot guided by security who directed people to take the elevator to the ground floor where a completely silent (or worn-out from previous parties) line of party-goers in head-to-toe black tie sprawled the perimeter of the lot leading up to the check-in table.

White vans with tinted windows took guests from the DGA to the ’round house’ on Mount Olympus — you can see from Fairfax driving North — all lit up in red. At the drive-way, black wristbands were cut and a rather steep hike to the Alert / Relativity / Veev sponsored party began.

The usual bevy of New Yorkers and Europeans are settling in for LA’s most esteemed week of the year — from NY (Nur Khan) to Paris (Andre Savaria) to even Texas (Lynn Wyatt), they’ll continue to roll in for various (quasi) Oscar related events –

From Larry Gagosian‘s annual oscar week art opening (this year for artist Urs Fischer), to Nic Berggruen‘s regular pre-Oscar Chateau soiree — which was followed this year by a late night post party at Justin Murdock‘s with a 1am call time, to Charles Finch‘s now regular Madeo’s dinner with Chanel, to Terry Richardson‘s opening of “TERRYWOOD” at Oh Wow gallery on La Cienega on Friday and PRISM’s annual pre-Oscar exhibit on Saturday (expected guests include Amy Sacco, Nina Clemente, Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld and Andy Valmorbida to support PRISM co-owner and brother PC). Also sure to attract a good crowd and many Trufflers — Ryan Kavanugh’s post Oscar bash and along with Guy Oseary‘s annual post soiree this Sunday. Click through our slideshow to see who is in town so far …

A little side note from Sundance on the new West Memphis Three documentaries

Although there were many points of interest at this year’s Sundance, the most fascinating and moving element was hands-down the new Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) produced documentary about the West Memphis Three which is directed by Amy Berg (who won an Oscar for her preist-molestation film Deliver Us from Evil in 2006) and is titled: West of Memphis. Moreover, the biggest star of Sundance, and biggest shock was one of the West Memphis Three, Damien Echols, who came along with Peter Jackson and several of the parents of the murdered boys that led to his possibly false imprisonment and death sentence in the 90s. Damien was joined in Sundance with his wife whom he met and married while on death row. The doc is aptly timed with the release of the West Memphis Three from prison this past August although it’s been in the works for ages. Peter was also with his wife who co-produced the film- the couple has been providing financial and public support for the defense since seeing Joe Berlinger’s 1996 documentary Paradise Lost for HBO about the case. The situation is only going to get bigger and bigger, as Berlinger’s follow up in a series of three HBO documentaries, “Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory,” was just nominated for an Oscar yesterday.

UPDATE (February 1, 2012): Deadline Hollywood is reporting Colin Firth has signed on to join Reese Witherspoon to co-star in Devil’s Knot, based on investigative reporter Mara Leveritt’s 2003 book Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, to be directed by Atom Egoyan (The Exorcism Of Emily Rose). Colin will play private investigator Ron Lax who offered his services for free to the defendents in 1993 and who helped find the DNA in the knots that bound one of the victims that cast suspicion on the stepfather of one of the 8-year old murdered boys. Filming begins next summer in Louisiana, and other big names are expected to join the cast in smaller roles.

Pre-Golden Globes Wella Beauty Bar

A Braid Bar in WeHo ?! Gittt out … Why is this so hard? The service takes 15 minutes, costs $25 ($40 with shampoo) and there are a million different braids to pick from. Our friends at BMF Media, Domain and LFB Media Group banned together to bring celebs, influencers and press to the Wella Beauty Bar pop up lounge at NINE | ZERO | ONE salon — a permanent salon located in a castle-esque building off Santa Monica Blvd in what was once a library in L.A.’s early days.

The braid bar is a permanent amenity at the salon, but temporary sponsors also came in for the two day event such as Fake Bake tanning, shelves full of Schick Quattro for Women and Bio-Oil (known to prevent scarring if you apply the cream at the time of the scratch), a photo booth, UV Vodka (and UV Vodka cupcakes) and catering from the Little Door Next Door. We also noticed a major sponsor was the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau which is kind of amazing, no? We just heard they are sponsoring some things in Sundance as well which begins this Thursday, January 19th. Another sponsor of note was Teleflora, owned by Lynda & Stewart Resnick, who built the new wing at LACMA last year — aptly named the Resnick Pavillion. (They also literally have an orchard at their Sunset Blvd home in Beverly Hills (specifically a pomegranate orchard which is semi in relation to their other company POM which makes pomegranate juice — we put a picture of their house down below)).

#TruffleNotes: Wella was started as a wigs and hairpiece company in the late 1800s but by the time the 1900s rolled around, wigs were no longer in fashion so they started trying to invent ways to permanently add waves to hair and thus created the ‘perm’ — see a pic of their first perming machine down below!  Continue reading
