NY Fashion Week – Vivienne Tam show, Charlotte Ronson afterparty

Lincoln Center is bedlam and I’m running late for the Vivienne Tam show which starts at 3pm.  However, shows never start on time so I’m ok.  Vivienne’s show is in The Theater a mini amphitheater with tiered seating.  To my right are about 1000 photographers.  To my left the entrance to the catwalk.  I’ve met Vivienne before and she is charming and beautiful in person.  As for her newest collection I think it’s truffilicious.  It has a little bit of a late 1960′s hippie peasant feel.   All the models sport sandals, bohemian jewelry and funky hobo bags.  Batik prints are also heavily featured.  Guests at her show included: tennis star Serena Williams, actress Denise Richards, Top Chef’s Kelly Choi, former Hef girl and reality show star Kendra Wilkinson, model Irina, and PR girl Lizzie Grubman.

Later that night I was invited by friends to the after party for the Charlotte Ronson show.  Charlotte has designed a collection that reviewers say reminds them of the late 90′s.  It featured slip dresses and flannel shirts tied around the waist and is “a little grungy but feminine.”  The party was jam packed and on two levels in the club Avenue in the Meatpacking area.  Guests included: Russell Simmons, DJ’s Samantha Ronson and Mia Moretti, actress Rashida Jones, skiier Bodiie Miller, singer Josh Groban, 90210 actress Shenae Grimes, and LA native Brent Bolthouse.

NY Fashion Week – Maybelline New York Beauty Retreat

actress Jamie King applies makeup on a volunteer

This week during during New York fashion week, Maybelline New York and CVS are providing a fun beauty retreat for fashionistas, stylists and individuals wishing to get their makeup touched up between shows.  I decide to swing by on Saturday to check out the action….

The day before at the CHOONMOONPARK fashion show stylist Phillip Bloch had mentioned he’d be at the retreat to promote his new book, “The Shopping Diet” which is all about curbing those spending impulses.  Don’t I know it…  However, I am told he isn’t arriving until 3pm.  Unfortunately, that’s when I have to be at designer Vivienne Tam’s show.  Coincidentally, I learn that the makeup artists and makeup at Vivienne’s show are provided by Maybelline.

However, Gossip Girl actress Jessica Szhor (who is rumored to be back on with Ed Westwick) is in the house with her grandma Karen.  She is looking hot as ever and maybe more thanks to her Maybelline makeover.  She loves the new falsies mascara for maximum length lashes.  Actress/model Jamie King also stops by and is even game enough to apply makeup on willing volunteers.  FYI, Jamie stars in a new ABC  show this fall called My Generation.

I also have a lot of fun sampling the beauty products.  Probably my new favorite Maybelline item is a lip stain called Color Sensational.  What’s interesting is that it applies like a magic marker which I’ve never seen before.  It’s matte in texture and seems to last forever so it works well as a base coat.  It also has a yummy berry taste.  I’d personally apply a lip gloss on top for a sexy shine.

Guests also entered the “Be A Sensational Makeup Artist” contest, sponsored by Maybelline New York and CVS/pharmacy. They were able to film themselves creating a makeup look with Maybelline products, then upload it to the contest website.  The lucky winner gets to work backstage with Charlotte Willer (Maybelline’s Global Consulting Makeup Artist) at a  Mercedes Benz Fashion Week show next February.  For more info on the contest, please visit www.besensationalandwin.com.

Fashion Week SS11: Prince Peter & Parkchoomoo (NEW YORK)

It’s fashion week in New York and I’ve made a decision that I want to try to avoid the chaos of this week, but somehow it seems to be following me …  Last night there was a Model’s Hotel party on the roof of the Thompson Hotel followed by a presentation of the Prince Peter Collection which is a sexy rock and roll punk inspired line.  Bebe Buell (Liv Tyler’s mom) performed in the  minimalist Soho loft where the show was held.  Afterward I had dinner at Cipriani on West Broadway.  I noticed that they’d swapped the artwork around.  There are new Peter Beards, a Peter Tunney and a photo of 80′s supermodel Paulina Porizkova in a Mickey Mouse bathing suit.

NYC: Best Buddies Hamptons Gala – Anne Hearst, Anthony Shriver, Jay McInerney, Tatiana & Campion Platt

It’s the 3rd Annual Hamptons Gala of Best Buddies at the home of Anne Hearst (board member of Best Buddies) and writer Jay McInerney (Bright Lights Big City) who I met last week at Author’s Night and in their foyer I’m greeted by two people in elaborate traditional Southeast Asian attire.  Their straw hats point forward as they bow and their festive purple and gold satin ceremonial dress  shimmers in the light.  I have magically been transported…  We move past them and make our way to a back terrace with a large bar and starched bartenders.  There are countless acres of fenced off land and off in the distance is a sculpture garden and lo and behold an ostrich appears in the horizon.  Too cool… And to the left, a canopied white tent awaits dinner guests for dancing after cocktails…

Some of the guests have taken the Southeast Asian theme to heart and are having a good time with it.  The Platt family are probably the most striking example.  Architect Campion Platt, whose silver hair and blue eyes are a striking contrast against his all black Judo-style suit with wide legs and Mandarin frog closures.  His wife Tatiana Platt, a former top AOL exec and co-founder of Fame Game, is a sexpot in a short version of a traditional Chinese Cheongsam complete with stiletto dominatrix boots.  Their infants complete the picture of domestic bliss in matching outfits.

Xenia, Campion, Tatiana and Fox Platt with Anthony Shriver

Also in attendance is Anthony K. Shriver (Maria Shriver‘s brother and JFK‘s nephew) who is Founder and Chairman of Best Buddies.  Best Buddies International, is a nonprofit that offers opportunities for friendship, employment and leadership development to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  He had a wonderful role model in his mother Eunice who founded the Special Olympics.

My friend Alice knows Anthony and wants to say hi, but it’s like trying to talk to the Mayor tonight.  He has literally not moved more than five feet from where he entered – he is so swamped with people who wish to say hello.  We leave early because we have the Sunflower party at ACE founder Henry Buhl‘s house – which also ended up being a lot of fun.  However, as a result we unfortunately missed a show stopping performance by the Countess de Lesseps where she sang her signature song, “Money Can’t Buy You Class.”

Other notable guests included: Co-chairs Haley and Jason Binn of Hamptons Magazine and Niche Media (great clambake recently), polo player Nic Roldan, Oscar winning producer Marty Richards, artists Hunt Slonem and Peter Tunney (whose art show I attended a few weeks ago), Richard Johnson (editor of Page Six), “So You Think You Can Dance” season 5 winner, Geoffroy van Raemdonck (Managing Director of Louis Vuitton North America) and Buddy Ambassador Brett Banford, etc.

NYC: Hamptons book Event w Dinner at Roger Water’s House: Candace Bushnell, Alec Baldwin, Jay McInerney

Candace Bushnell

It’s a smorgasbord of over 100 writers at the East Hampton library who patiently sign copies of their newest novels at the 5th Annual Authors Night.  The event founded by actor/novelist Alec Baldwin (A Promise to Ourselves) features Pulitzer Prize winners Robert A. Caro and poet Philip Schultz, and best-selling authors like Candace Bushnell (Sex and the City, Lipstick Jungle, One Fifth Avenue), Jay McInerney (Bright Lights Big City, Brightness Falls, The Good Life), Melissa Bank (The Girls Guide to Hunting and Fishing, The Wonder Spot), Danielle Ganek (The Summer We Read Gatsby), Ken Auletta (Googled: The End of the World as We Know It, Greed and Glory on Wall Street: The Fall of the House of Lehman), and Florence Fabricant (Park Avenue Potluck Celebrations).

Having studied creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College I’m pretty jazzed up and immediately look for Candace Bushnell.  A frail, petite blond with large eyes, and a slightly lost look, I long to give her a fan for the heat, a mint julep and a big hug.  I say hi and tell her I’m a writer a la Carrie Bradshaw who writes about the city not sex.  She smiles slightly and there is an awkward pause so I offer to buy her latest book The Carrie Diaries: Meet Carrie Before Sex and the City which she signs with much flourish.  She has misspelled my name.

At the event, I weave from author table to author table chatting and buying books.  I am dressed to the 9′s in a long black evening gown and am completely out of place in the sea of seersucker suits and Lily dresses.  I precariously teeter on 4 inches heels as I balance a stack of books, a quilted Chanel clutch, a glass of white wine and not so daintily attempt to keep my dress from dragging on the ground.  Later that night I will be attending finance philanthropist George Soros’ 80th birthday party and there is no time to change… after this I have the Author’s Dinner with Hilary Thayer Hamann (Anthropology of An American Girl). Fyi, my girlfriend Elizabeth Cohen stopped by after the dinner Roger Waters of Pink Floyd hosted for Candace Bushnell and Jay McInerney.  She says the mix of music Roger played was really good and everybody had fun playing pool…

The Author’s Dinner I am attending for Hilary is hosted at the home of Julie Ratner and Sam Eskenazi in East Hampton.  It turns out that Julie is the founder of the Ellen’s Run Charity for breast cancer from which her sister Ellen Hermanson passed 22 years ago.  This Saturday there will be another benefit for Ellen’s Run (http://www.ellensrun.org/) at Steven Klein’s estate in Southampton which is where I attended the Vanity Fair Acria party a few weeks ago.  Julie and Sam are gracious hosts.  They love the Hamptons as does our guest of honor, Hilary Thayer Hamann who grew up there.  As a result, one of the main topics of our dinner conversation is a round table discussion of what first brought us to the Hamptons or our most poignant memory of the Hamptons.

Hilary’s novel is a poetic, multi-layered piece that takes place in her youth in East Hampton and beyond in New York City in the 1970′s and early 80′s.  An Oprah recommended book selection you can find it on Amazon.com or in your local bookstore.

NYC: Cocktails at Sunset event hosted by Calvin Klein and Vanity Fair at Steven Klein’s in Bridgehampton

Francisco Costa & Daphne Guinness

While the invite clearly stated Cocktails at Sunset it was one of those typical Hampton’s weekends where we were juggling multiple invitations.  We missed our friend’s store party in Bridgehampton (which bummed me out) and instead headed to the Surf Club in Quogue, a charming town before Southampton.  We were going to a Nantucket style clambake a Merrill Lynch banker friend of Alice’s from Georgetown hosts annually.  The party was right on the beach with a band, lots of food, cheap booze and grosgrain whale belts.  Unfortunately it caused us to miss the sunset at photographer Steven Klein’s estate in Bridgehampton.

The Cocktails at Sunset event hosted by Calvin Klein and Vanity Fair benefiting ACRIA (Aids Community Research Initiative of America),  was created in 1991 and has contributed to the development of more than a dozen medications that have received FDA approval

Fyi, Steven is bff’s with Madonna and the site of one of her many infamous horseback riding accidents.

I was first made aware of Steven Klein when I was 18 at USC (I eventually transferred) through my second boyfriend.  He was a top male model who posed for both Steven Klein and Bruce Weber and was known for his sculpted abs.  I just remember my conservative father quizzically looking at his  Zed card, asking where he’d gone to college (he had a high school GED), looking pained and then gruffly saying, “just don’t get pregnant” before abruptly changing the subject.

Needless to say it was dark when we arrived but we could hear the music jamming in the distance (courtesy of Leigh Lezark, Geordon Nicol and Greg K from The MisShapes) and there were golf carts.  I always love parties with golf carts.

It was quite dark but it seemed as though Steven Klein’s grounds were massive. Hence, Madge’s ability to horseback ride.

The party consisted of an enormous white tent with a silent art auction and white glove bar.  My friend Alice came back and announced “these are the nicest porta potties ever.  They have art work in them!” Hilarious… Basically, Vanity Fair doesn’t scrimp on details.

We had arrived at the point in the party when everybody was tipsy and dancing, but sadly the bar had run out of white wine it being a hot summer day…  champagne was still available and everybody seemed to be having a good time.

Spy Rachel Zoe with her husband across the dance floor and polo player/model Nacho Figueras with his wife Delfina Blacquier by the auction paintings.  Daphne Guinness posing in a silvery Lady Gaga Medieval headdress. Also present; Stefano Tonchi – newly upgraded to editor of W magazine, Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa, Vogue‘s Meredith Melling Burke, Kelly Klein, Katie Lee, actress Melissa George, and many more …

Dance to a few songs and before you know it the party is winding down…

NYC: Bavarian Born Nina Freudenberger’s Haus Interior Party in New York

Serena Merriman and Nina Freudenberger (in Yigal Azrouël)

Nina Freudenberger is a natural, makeup-free, leggy Teutonic blonde with sprite-like energy. As a graduate of RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) and a former senior designer at Kondylis Design, Nina is celebrating the one year anniversary of her Nolita-based retail store, Haus interior.  Items inspired by her Bavarian Black Forest roots range from mounted antlers, an old gas lamp, random books, framed photos of horses, and a stuffed pheasant with a tail so green and long you have to stop yourself from touching it. Nina’s store is an extension of her design firm, also named Haus Interior, founded in 2007. The retail store also acts as a meeting place between her and clients to go over wallpaper swatches, magazines, design books or the items in the stores for interior decorating ideas.

Tonight all of Nina’s friends are scattered through out her flagship (look for them in Boston in 2011) store. Like Nina, her friends are creative minds… take former LA native Sean MacPherson, there with girlfriend Guest of a Guest editor Rachelle Hruska, who started Swingers, Jones and Bar Lubitch – and even owned Bar Marmont at one time – but has since moved to NYC and is now the brains behind the Waverly Inn, The Bowery Hotel and The Jane Hotel.  Other objects d’amies include Paper Magazine’s Peter Davis and Luigi Tadini (also co-chair of Riverkeeper with friend Amanda Hearst), Annie Churchill, publicist Bettina Prentice, creative consultant Kate Schelter, decorator-designer Reed Woodson, stylist Bonnie Morrison, GQ style correspondent Brett Falghren, Ralph Lauren designer Titina von Waldow, Vogue’s Valerie Boster, Art Production Fund’s Casey Fremont, fashion designer Timo Weiland and finally Serena Merriman who is in charge of PR for the evening.

Lemongrass sparkle cocktails were served (a mix of Double Cross vodka, pear juice, lemon grass, simple syrup and a touch of champagne) and mini cupcakes in banana split, red velvet (my fave), maple bacon and strawberries & cream.

NYC: Hamptons Magazine Annual Clambake

Last Sunday my lobster obsession was temporarily sated at the Hamptons Magazine Annual Clambake hosted by Haley & Jason Binn, Debra Halpert and Samantha Yanks.  One week this summer due to all the Hamptons lobster bakes, catered lunches and dinners in the city I had lobster three times.  That was a good week.  This particular event took place at the Montauk Yacht Club which is quite picturesque.  The club’s original membership included Vincent Astor, J.P. Morgan, Nelson Doubleday, Edsel Ford, Harry Payne Whitney, Thomas Eastman, John Wanamaker and Harold S. Vanderbilt. Among the many original guests were famed aviator Charles Lindbergh, who often flew his seaplane into the harbor to dock at the Marina.  The man had style.

Also on the menu were mussels, oysters and of course clams – it being a clambake.  For all you carnivores there was an Allen Brother Steak BBQ station.  Guests were greeted with a welcome glass of La Marca Prosecco not to mention a William Hill wine bar, Dos Equis, Tequila Avion mixoloxy station, Xante cocktails in coconuts and a vodka ice luge station.  Needless to say, it was a properly catered affair.  Kudos to Jason Binn.  I say what recession.  America rocks.

After lobster and wine I was able to do shots of oxygen.  Maybe they thought the oxygen would go to my brain and make me pull out my check book as there were several Lamborghini’s on display, but I was told there were no discounts that day so unfortunately I had to pass.   I was even able to exercise a bit as there was croquet and a dance floor.  Finally the goody bag consisted of a piece of jewelry of one’s choice courtesy of Chicos.  I settled on a lovely set of purple bangles which matched my outfit nicely.  Lots of laughs and as I said before, any party with lobster is a good party.

Montauk is considered the more remote portion of the Hamptons and has long attracted and inspired artists like Andy Warhol and Peter Beard.  It’s also known for it’s great waves which attract a surfer contingent.  After the party we headed to a beach bonfire  and then Surf Lodge which served as an unofficial after party.  Fyi, if you ever discover sand stuck between the keys of your Blackberry as I did use a dry toothbrush.  It totally did the trick.  I must give credit to my clever girlfriend Elise for that one.

NYC: Equus in East Hampton – Alec Baldwin, Sam Underwood

Steve Hamilton, Sam Underwood as "Alan Strang", Georgia Warner

Typically summer theater consists of light comedies not a heavy psychological mystery about why a 17 year old English boy would senselessly blind 6 horses in a fit of passion.  However, this is no ordinary play – it”s the 1970′s play “Equus” – a modern classic – and actor Alec Baldwin seeking to constantly challenge himself as an actor immediately said “Equus” when asked what play he most wanted to perform.  Playwright Sir Peter Shaffer made minor revisions specifically for this performance.

Baldwin stars as one of the two leads, psychologist Dr. Martin Dysart and Sam Underwood serves as his foil, the troubled Alan Strang whose sympathy we gain and whose strange passion we attempt to understand.  Indeed, passion is the crux of the play.   Baldwin’s Dr. Dysart is a fascinating character for he is a tormented man with romantic longings.  Every night he reads books of far away civilizations and dreams of escape.  He lives vicariously through his patients who he bitterly realizes it’s his civic duty to anesthetize of passion when it goes awry and wonders if they are any better off for now they are just like him.

22 year old Underwood is yet another enormously talented young British import Hollywood should keep its eyes out for.  He was impressive to say the least. Newcomer Georgia Warner skillfully plays Alan’s love interest who attempts to seduce him the night he goes mad.  Baldwin is sympathetic as Dysart, and I enjoyed his performance.

An after party took place in the garden behind the theater and an unofficial after party across the street at the Maidstone hotel.  Director Sidney Lumet (Network, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico) was in attendance and playwright Peter Shaffer.

“Equus” runs at the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall in East Hampton until July 3rd.

NYC: East Hampton store party: Calypso, What2WearWhere.com, Riverkeeper

This past Saturday my friend, attorney Misty Allen, told me she had an invite to a fun store party in East Hampton.  Calypso St. Barth was co-hosting a shopping event with What2WearWhere.com and the Riverkeeper Jr Council for the East End Generation Green Committee to benefit the Group for the East End, Peconic Baykeeper and Riverkeeper.  These three environmental groups seek to protect and preserve the integrity of our natural environment. Riverkeeper in particular has gotten a lot of PR because its a favorite cause of the Kennedys.

DJ Flo was spinning and there were lots of cute clothes to be tempted by.  In attendance were designer Annie Churchill Albert, Amanda Hearst (founding member Riverkeeper and Group for the East End co-chair), publicist R. Couri Hay, and Ari Meisel (founding member East End Generation Green Committee).

What2WearWhere.com is a cool new website founded by Karen Klopp dedicated to helping today’s busy working women make decisions about what 2 wear to different occasions (where).  The site cleverly breaks clothing into different categories: life’s event, workplace, sports & adventure, travel, and packing.  I met Karen at the event and she is  a dynamic, positive individual.  A life long conservationist she also served on the Board of Directors of Riverkeeper.

FYI, for the month of June, What2WearWhere.com will donate 50% of it’s online sales to these causes so be sure to check out the website!
