Former Treasury Secretary and Harvard President Larry Summers from the “Social Network” movie calls the Winklevoss Twins Assholes in an interview with CNN (VIDEO)

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

“One of the things you learn as a college president is that if an undergraduate is wearing a tie and jacket on Thursday afternoon at 3:00, there are two possibilities, one is that they’re looking for a job and have an interview. The other is that they are an asshole. This was the latter case. Rarely have I encountered such swagger and I tried to respond in kind.” – Larry Summers

Larry Summers needs to get out more. Swagger like that is a dime a dozen and the Winklevii had legit reason to be in his office. If he’s got issues with Brooks Brothers and young kids trying to get ahead, who the hell hired him to be at Harvard?

Julian Assange covers Forbes

Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, has friends in high (and low) places … Just as Nikkie Finke has dominated the Hollywood gossip grapevine with her network of friends from studio heads to mailroom trainees, Wikileaks has some sources of their own that are dumping “secret”, “confidential” and “unclassified” documents from several US embassies around the world.

Some have asked why the U.S. can’t just pull down the documents which could potentially endanger the U.S., foreign relations, missions and even individual lives. Well, the site is run of a host in Sweden which is offers anonymity under under Swedish law and hosts websites on a series of servers and holds no recods making it virtually impossible to forcedly remove documents.

Newsweek reports Iranian mother faces 99 lashes or death by stoning!!

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Sakineh Ashtiani, mother of 2, might be stoned this weekend for possibly cheating on her husband…. Yes, you heard right, I did say stoned to death.  This poor woman was thrown in jail in 2006, followed by 99 lashes.

The Iranian penal code says, “stones are large enough to cause pain, but not so large as to kill the victim immediately.” Article 102 of the Penal Code states that men should be buried up to their waists and women up to their breasts for the purpose of execution by stoning. Article 104 states, with reference to the penalty for adultery, that the stones used should “not be large enough to kill the person by one or two strikes; nor should they be so small that they could not be defined as stones.” -Newsweek

This is the product of Sharia Law.

What else does Sharia law say?  “In a Sharia court, a woman’s testimony has only half the value of a man’s testimony. A woman who accuses a man of rape must produce four male witnesses. The system in Iran practises gender apartheid.”

I don’t understand how a man or woman in the history of time could ever be stoned to death for adultery, let alone in the year 2010.

This doesn’t seem real to me.

Stoning someone to death… are you for real Iran? Way to go back to the Ice Age, but hey, I don’t think people would consciously stone someone to death even during that time !

P.S. The sick part is that it has not been proven that she really did cheat on her husband.  What would Iran say about Tiger Woods, John Edwards, or Jesse James? PROBABLY nothing!

SHARIA LAW: THEY’LL STONE MUM TO DEATH

BY ANNA PUKAS

BY THE time you read this, it may already be too late and Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani may be already dead.

It is possible that this 43-year-old woman, the mother of two almost grown-up children has already been taken from her filthy cell in the local jail in Tabriz, a town in northern Iran, wrapped from head to toe in a close-fitting white shroud and buried up to her chest.

She may have gazed in terror at the piles of stones collected for the express purpose of killing her – stones carefully selected to be big enough to wound but not to kill quickly.

It could be that her body lies bloody and broken in some unmarked spot and that her children, a son and a daughter, weep for a mother put to death in horrific fashion.

all this may have happened already or it could happen at any moment over the next few days. What is certain is that Sakineh Ashtiani has been convicted of adultery by a Sharia court and sentenced to be executed by stoning and that the legal process in Iran has been exhausted.

Sakineh and her children must now pin their hopes on pressure from outside their country. And it is also evident that international outrage against the conduct of the Iranian authorities is widespread and growing.

The European Union has protested. Foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton yesterday condemned the sentence as “particularly cruel”. There have been demonstrations outside the Iranian embassy in London and the embassy of Pakistan in Washington DC, which looks after Iranian interests in the US.

Amnesty International has contacted the Iranian government directly to appeal for clemency. A letter signed by 16 prominent legal academics, including seven professors of law, condemning stoning as “barbaric” and asking for mercy for Sakineh was published yesterday.

On the internet there are forums, blogs, petitions and a Facebook page devoted to registering protest and appeals for Sakineh’s life to be spared. Most poignantly her son Sajad, 22, and daughter Farideh, 17, have published an open letter begging for pressure to be brought to bear upon the Iranian authorities.

It is a heartbreaking document: “Today we seek help from people all over the world,” they write. “Today, when all the paths have reached a dead end and our mother’s lawyer said that she is in grave danger, we come to you. The colour of your skin or the country or city you live in is not important. We go to everyone who has experienced the pain of losing a loved one.

Help us save our mother. Write letters and ask officials to release her. Tell them that no one has filed a complaint against her and that she has done nothing wrong. Our mother should not die. Is there anyone who hears our pleas for help?”

That stoning, a punishment redolent of biblical times, should still be considered acceptable in the 21st century in a country with a rich and ancient culture of which it is rightly proud, is abomination enough. Even more abhorrent is the blatant lack of justice in Sakineh’s case.

Sakineh’s alleged crime is adultery. She was arrested in 2005 and sentenced the following year to 99 lashes. Her son, then 17, witnessed his mother being flogged. “The authorities asked if I wanted to wait outside. I said no. I could not leave my mother all alone,” said Sajad.

But Sakineh was then re-arrested on suspicion of having murdered her husband with her alleged lover. Although she was acquitted, the court in Tabriz re-examined her adultery case. Ignoring the fact that she had been punished for that crime, the panel of judges sentenced her to death based on “judge’s knowledge” – a legal concept which is almost impossible to define, let alone understand, in a Western context.

“Judge’s knowledge can mean anything,” says Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, an Iranian-born scientist and human rights activist based in Oslo. “It can mean the judge is using his intuition or simply that he doesn’t like you. Basically, it means judges can do whatever they like. There is no logic to their reasoning, nor does there need to be.”

Amiry-Moghaddam cites the 2004 case of a 13-year-old girl raped by her 15-year-old brother. “Sharia law permits the withdrawal of the charge if the defendant confesses voluntarily. In this case, the boy admitted having sex with his sister.

The judges repealed the death sentence on the boy but not the girl. She was stoned to death. So the verdict is that he did not have illegal sex with his sister but she did with him. Where is the logic there?”

Sakineh was originally convicted of adultery on the basis of a supposed confession, which she has since retracted, claiming it was obtained under duress. The “confession”, like the trial proceedings, was in Farsi, the official language of Iran. But Sakineh’s ethnic origin is Azeri and she does not speak Farsi well, if at all.

“She is not a person with many resources,” says Amiry-Moghaddam, 38, who left Iran in the mid-Eighties, soon after the revolution which brought the Ayatollah Khomeini to power. “She could not afford to hire a good lawyer. She is not rich, not highly educated and not well-connected. This all makes her a good victim.

“Sharia law is the means by which the Iranian regime instils fear in the people. The vessels of oppression are the poor, the ethnic minorities, the weak.” And, of course, women.

“In a Sharia court, a woman’s testimony has only half the value of a man’s testimony. A woman who accuses a man of rape must produce four male witnesses. The system in Iran practises gender apartheid.”

Death by stoning is slow and painful but even in death there is inequality. Anyone who manages to drag him or herself out of the ground during the stoning earns the right to have his or her life spared. However, while men are buried up to the waist, women are buried up to the chest.

Horrible as it was to witness his mother being flogged, Sajad Ashtiani believed that at least her ordeal was over. “I was thinking, OK, they hit her, now it’s finished. She’s free to go. They should have punished her only once. She paid for this crime five years ago.”

Sajad is granted one 15-minute visit a week with his mother. He says his only hope now is to obtain a letter of pardon from Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khameini and to mobilise international support.

As Britain recalls the events of five summers ago – yesterday was the fifth anniversary of the London Tube and bus bombings – those pleas should resonate even more deeply.

For it is the stated aim of those who carried out those bombings to turn Britain into an Islamic state governed by the same Sharia law which has condemned Sakineh to such an abominably cruel death. And not only the bombers but all those who aided them, who gave them training and expertise in their deadly craft, who poured into their ears and minds the poison which set them on their murderous course.

Could they succeed? Not impossible, says Amiry-Moghaddam. “Iran is a pretty advanced country. There is little support for the extremists. Even the less-educated rural people think Sharia penal law is barbaric and belongs to a time when there was no real civilisation. But unfortunately it is also true that it is the extremists who shout the loudest and who are heard. So yes, we should all beware.”

Disturbingly, the more moderate Islamic countries appear to be keeping a silence over the Ashtiani affair and over the more barbaric aspects of Sharia law in general. This too, must change, says Amiry-Moghaddam.

“In these cases, there must be a broad coalition between the West and the moderate Islamic nations.

“The international outcry over Sakineh’s case can definitely help her because there comes a point where it is more damaging for Iran not to heed international opinion. It comes down to the absolute basics of protecting human rights. Protect those and you protect everyone. Neglect them or lose them and the whole world is in peril.”

NYC: Massive snowstorm!!

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg canceled school for the city’s 1.1 million public school students on Friday after a massive snowstorm dumped 10 inches of fluff on the city, with more slated to come. It’s the second lucky day for New York City school kids this month, but only the fourth snow day in the last six years, the Associated Press reports. The massive snowstorm pummeling the Northeast isn’t lucky for everyone, though. Thousands of flights have been canceled across the east coast, and utility companies from Pennsylvania to New England are bracing for power outages due to snow and wind, with gusts up to 50 mph reported. The wind has reportedly helped spread a large fire in coastal New Hampshire.

#OMG: Kourtney Kardashian pulls her own baby out

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

VIDEO (*no sound) WTF people … W.T.F. I cannot believe!!! how good E! programming has gotten!! I can. not. wait~! for Pretty Wild. The Spindustry was pretty well done too – premiered last night after Kourtney’s very weird self-child-birth. I don’t even know why the doctor was there. She is so me. I would totally be the girl dripping around on the hard floors, filming my water breaking, and then being – like – to the doctor – I got this! I got this!

Pull your baby out of your own vagina! No big deal.

I asked my friend,  San Francisco-based midwife Ami Burnham,  about this and she said “this birth practice is not uncommon…  of course the attending provider has to offer and the mother has to desire to help the baby out, but it is certainly not unheard of.”

According to Ami, “the doctor or midwife helps to guide the head and the anterior shoulder out, once those bits are out the baby usually slips out into mama’s or anyone else’s hands for that matter. Of course the woman has to be in a position in which she can reach down and grab her own baby but other then that it’s not to challenging.”

Heidi Pratt v. Jocelyn Wildenstein

UPDATE 08/17/10: We have been told by freinds that Heidi Montag’s plastic surgeon Frank Ryn has died in a car crash on PCH yesteday at 4:30pm.

Poor Heidi :(

This is truly sad. I can’t imagine how bad she must of felt about her self to actually of gone through with this.  Yes, I have days where I am frustrated or unhappy with myself, and I have whatever funds I need if I wanted to have any plastic surgery, but I am sane and would never make such horrid choices at a young age!

Let me preface this properly, I was born and have lived in Beverly Hills my whole life; I am no stranger to plastic surgery.  On any given day in my life now or in highschool, I see girls shopping with nose casts or young women with head wraps on.  This is not a big deal to me because most times it improved their look or made them feel better…on a small scale. New video footage shows Michael Jackson look-a-like jumping out of a coronors van

I’d always been of the notion that Michael Jackson’s death was a conspiracy to relieve him of the psychological stress he was enduring however at this point with seeing his family suffer – it would be hard to believe they were in on the rouse and hard to believe he would put them through such grief … There is no reason suggest this man is MJ other than the physical shape and silhouette, the van license plates look like they could be the same number … hopefully some clarification will follow. Last year, a drunk but accomplished USC student got in a brawl with a neighborhood kid with a kitchen knife. Bryan R. Frost, a USC film student and former West Point cadet, was killed. The trial of a South L.A. man charged with the slaying starts Monday. The local suspect was convicted in 2002 of a misdemeanor for carrying a concealed weapon and sentenced to probation and graffiti cleanup. Three years ago, he was sentenced to 45 days in jail on a misdemeanor charge of loitering for drug purposes; he was also ordered not to associate with gang members. He is now in Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, where he is being held on $1-million bail. Read full story at L.A. Times.

Chinese steel workers beat boss to death in response to arrogant job threats

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Last Friday, Chinese employees at Tonghua Iron & Steel, a state steel company run and owned by the Jilin province of China, beat to death Chen Guojun, the interim general manager sent by soon-to-be parent company Jianlong Group, one of China’s largest private steel companies. The Financial Times reported the lynching was in response to the impending privatisation of the company, which has now been scrapped, and Chen’s announcements that disillusioned workers and provoked them by saying most of them would be laid off in three days. “Chen, saying that a total number of 30,000 employees would be cut to 5,000, infuriated the crowd,” said a Tonghua police officer named Wang, according to the state-run China Daily.

And I thought it was pretty unheard of when French Fiat workers took their boss hostage last March. A week ago in China, CEO of another Steel Company was sentenced to death for accepting bribes. I know we have our own share of problems in the US but this is crazy.

Leave it to China: Chinese Chairman sentenced to death for accepting 28.8M in bribes

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Chen Tonghai, the former head of oil-refinery Sinopec, China’s largest company, has been given a suspended death sentence after being convicted of taking $28.8m (€20.4m, £17.5m) in bribes over his eight years as a senior executive. Sinopec, also known as the China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation, is one of China’s two leading onshore oil and gas producers and the nation’s largest oil refiner. Chen Tonghai abruptly resigned in 2007 and also resigned from the posts of general manager and secretary of the CPC (Communist Party of China) Committee of China Petrochemical Corporation, Sinopec’s parent company, “for personal reasons,” and then was detained after trying to flee the country. Mr Chen’s sentence to death is suspended for two years because he had expressed remorse, returned the money he had received in bribes and provided information on other offenders to investigators. He has the right to appeal and people given a suspended death penalty in China typically have the sentence commuted. According to reports, Tonghai, is one of 16 CEOs in the Chinese iron ore and steel industry who have accepted bribes from Rio Tinto, another company outside interested in a controlling interest.

Leave it to China. I am sure many of you will say this man did something wrong and so what. Or that fear and strong punishments set a good precedent for society. There is a difference between heated revenge and a thought-out punishment. There is no way humans are equipped to know the point at which a death is fair.

The proposed ship is an integrated city with condominium housing for 30,000 people, an airstrip, duty- free shopping and a rapid transit systems. The complex would circumnavigate the globe continuously, stopping regularly at ports of call. Other projects, such as the ResidenSea, have similarly attempted to create mobile communities, though they have conservatively limited themselves to the constraints of conventional shipbuilding. In regards to the economic flexibility and “freedom” created by such mobile settlements, these projects could be considered a realization of the avante-garde Walking City concept from 1964, by British architect Ron Herron of the group Archigram.
