National Geographic Shot of the Month

From Nat Geo: “My husband and I were exploring Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park-Canada when we stopped for a timed picture of the two of us. We had our camera set up on some rocks and were getting ready to take the picture when this curious little ground squirrel appeared, became intriqued with the sound of the focusing camera and popped right into our shot! A once in a lifetime moment! We were laughing about this little guy for days!!”

Have a great shot? Send it to National Geographic magazine.

As L.A. readies itself for season 6 of “Entourage,” Shane Powers blogs on the show’s authenticy

If you haven’t been following Shane Power’s blog at shanepowers.com, it’s time to start. This L.A. insider has been nailing the hard facts since ’08 in sports, politics, celebrities and women. Corn-fed boy turned Tinsle Town scenster attests to Entourage’s authenticity today on his blog.

As one third of “The Alliance” trio, one of L.A.’s most notorious go-to guys for branding needs in entertainment and Hollywood, Shane and his long-time partners, Josh Richman and Hartwell (just Hartwell) are serious players in the industry I call “Hollywood Adjacent”. Just a year ago washed-up GM spent 100s of thousands on the annual “tastemaker” bash in L.A. called the “GM Ten.” Along with Ashlee Margolis, PR-firm BNC, and platinum party-planner Jeff Best, “The Alliance” was is routinely called in to handle celebrity-wrangling, and much like any wrangling, it is an art. GM stopped the party this year however, giving The Alliance the weekend off.

You may recognize Shane from watching Survivor-Panama in 2006 – he was the controversial blackberry addict who made it all the way #11. He was also engaged to Eve. And you can catch him next along side Balthazar Getty in upcoming film “Struggle” (2009).

My own opinions on “Entourage” are very much the same as Shane’s. Entourage is dead on with correct Hollywood moments from locations to cameos to dialogue, the fast pace, the restaurants … everything is basically perfect. So yes, if you or a friend ever made it big in Hollywood, this is likely who you would be, where you would go, whom you would know. I hate the characters however - they are all empty (Vince), selfish (Turtle), foul (Drama) and useless (E). Ari and Lloyd are amazing. As a former employee of CAA, I can attest to the nature of the biz and Lloyd perfectly portrays the Hollywood assistant and Ari perfectly portrays the Hollywood agent and together they have the perfectly portrayed Hollywood boss employee relationship.

Here what Shane had to say about Entourage:

“Finally, fuck …” – from ShanePowers.com

In true HBO fashion, the new Entourage season starts RIGHT when I forgot about it. I don’t know why this network schedules shit the way they do, seemingly doing everything they can to torpedo their jagular tv shows, but whatevs.I want everyone to hear this. When this show was announced five or six years ago, I waited to watch and utterly shred it to fuckin bits.I have roughly a THOUSAND years of experience of watching real life entourages, specifically in this vein of young, goin out club monstering, model slaying silliness. I couldn’t wait to list all the reasons why this show sucked fuckin cock. And I gotta tell ya, they did a pretty great job of gettin it real close to right. You could literally hire me as a technical advisor on this show tommorra for the “scene stuff” that’s how ingrained I have been in this culture, and they don’t miss too bad. It’s been pretty impressive to watch. The show for me, has ended up bein a decently interesting journey. People immediately respond to Piven and his hyper clever agent guy SCHTICK, and there are times for me I laugh out loud. But the show would never have made it this long without the centering it receives from Kevin Connolly. Without him, and HIS story arc, it coulda devolved into comedy bits from Piven and who I think is the real comedy relief, Kevin Dillon. Instead, it’s five years later and I really want to know what happens to these characters. The show is fun. FACT.And the show also has heart at this point. FACT.Starts tonight at 9 or 930 or 10 or 1030… At this point, who fuckin knows. It’s HBO. They are tireless assholes when it comes to this part.

Scott Caan book launch party: “Scott Caan: Photographs Vol. 1″ at Otero Plassart gallery in L.A.

Scott Caan and his father at Scott’s first book party last night in L.A.

Last night I went to L.A. native, actor and photographer Scott Caan’s book party at Otero Plassart gallery on Fairfax. I know Scott from growing up in L.A. and the thing about him I relate to most is that we both have a deep passion towards our town and our childhoods here – and we both, in our own ways, seek to document them.

I first met Scott at Century City (not Westfield, Century City) where I use to hang out with my Westlake friends and other various groups of friends from other schools. Beverly (not West Beverly, Beverly) was right around the corner from CC, and there was always a bunch of cool guys who would come by. Oddly most of them are famous now – besides Scott, they included the likes of infamous beat artist Alan Maman better known as ”The Alchemist”, Neil Maman, Alan’s brother and a rather heavy-hitting manager, Seth Binzer or “Shifty” from Crazytown, Kairi Scott, who owns and designs for Kingsbury on 3rd street, and so on … It wasn’t just Beverly though – kids would come from all over town … actor Balthazar Getty, singer Jenny Lewis, actresses Mila Jovevich, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jessica Capshaw, celebrity publicist Kari Feinstein & Ashlee Margolis, designer Desanka Fasiska, filmmaker Liz Goldwyn, reggae front-man for The Wailers Elan Atias , and so on … They were as infamous in our small circles then as they are in these big circles now. Something was definitely a buzz in 1976 when our parents were having babies.

Scott’s book thanks his father twice, once at the beginning and once at the end – the man who gave him his first camera, AND an additional camera each year. His father, much like my mom who bought my brother a drum set and a Harley Davidson when he expressed interest, is receptive to Scott’s passions – whatever they may be – and supports his son unconditionally, with a passion all his own.

Scott also loves his friends, acting, making movies, growing up in L.A., and taking photos. You don’t have to know him to know that – all you have to do is look at his work. You will also finds tons of women, children, celebrities, foreign lands both better and worse than here … and lots of cigarettes, skaters and L.A. figures you’d see around if you, too, lived here.

The book’s product description says it best when they describe Scott as “passionate and gutsy”. Who else can push through deals to sell scripts at 23, take on the task of being a Hollywood renaissance man with multiple talents and pursuits and still make it to Cannes to stand on the red carpet with his heavy-weight cast of Ocean’s 11 and manage to shine just as bright.

Howard Nourmand is a friend of Scott’s who said to me last night … “Anything can be something” but followed it up quickly saying “but it’s all about the execution!” Howard runs a graphic design company called Grand Jeté in Los Angeles and designed & edited Scott’s book. The book’s cover is good-looking and handsome in that same elegant way a man should be. He also wrote the foreword for the book in which he likened Scott to the Robert Frost quote: “Freedom lies in being bold.” Howard add then adds: “Scott Caan embodies that Robert Frost quote more than anyone I have ever met.”

About Grand Jeté: Grand Jeté is a production company specializing in motion, graphics and live-action design. It is led by executive creative director Howard Nourmand, and its portfolio includes projects for the worlds top ad agencies, brands, recording artists, and filmmakers. www.grand-jete.com

About Rat Press: Rat Press is everything that film is not. It’s the biographies written by directors. It’s the interviews with actors and producers. Scott’s passionate, and gutsy, attitude has distinguished him as a photographer and allowed him to compose intimate images that are without question inaccessible to the masses.

The Lobster Drop – TIME magazine reports 30% to 50% drop on lobster prices

Owaki / Kulla / Corbis
I’ve always maintained lobster, and all other shellfish, are the work of GOD. Wearing their skeletons inside out, they are without doubt the most fascinating looking creatures to date. Appearing time and time again in art and jewelry, what other form of life must you boil to prevent its’ toxins from killing you? But even the restaurants are cutting back, reports TIME’s Dan Kadlec. One of the most grueling forms of fishing is the only reason for the high cost of this once peasant-only food. As is still true in some religions, shellfish were considered un-edible and the lowest form of nasty. The low price tag will not be enough for fisherman, and they will skip it altogether – once again, bringing lobster to a rarity. Looks like there is no out for this mysterious spider-fish … until they become un-vogue again. I pray for that moment soon. Poor things.

Jurassic Fish Fossil Auctioned at Christie’s

April 8 (Bloomberg) — The skeleton of a fish, at least 144 million years old, sold for 181,000 euros ($240,000) at a Christie’s International sale in Paris last night. The Ophtalmosaurus, a dolphin-like marine reptile of the Jurassic period, measured 540 centimeters (17.7 feet). Christie’s said fish such as this existed as much as 164 million years ago. The skeleton carried an estimate of 180,000 euros to 220,000 euros and sold to a private European collector. It was part of a paleontological sale that raised 761,423 euros, the London-based auction house said. Another lot, the jaws of a prehistoric shark aged between 2 million and 23 million years old, failed to sell at the reserve price of 150,000 euros: The bidding stopped at 140,000 euros, Christie’s said. The shark, which would have measured as much as 13 meters long, had 168 fossilized teeth that were fitted into reconstructed jaw cartilage. Wide open, the jaws measured 2.2 meters, Christie’s said. A third lot, the skeleton of an ancestor of the saber- toothed tiger — aged between 23.5 and 53 million years old and estimated at between 80,000 and 120,000 euros — also failed to sell.
A previous natural-history sale at Christie’s in Paris in 2007 drew protests from paleontologists who said it served as an encouragement to looters. A Christie’s adviser at the time said that there were plenty of skeletons already in museums and research would not suffer.

Since officially retiring from Microsoft in July, 2008, 52-year-old Bill Gates has amped up his philanthropic travel in support of the nonprofit Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. When he needs a break from the African heat—where much of the foundation’s efforts are concentrated—he’s been known to hop a helicopter to Apussuit Adventure Camp, a remote skiing resort 15 miles outside Maniitsoq, West Greenland. There are no ski lifts and, more importantly, no other people. “Given the small populations in Greenland’s towns, one can bring their own staff and gallivant around town going completely unnoticed,” says Mads Nordlund of Greenland Tourism. From Forbes.

Uhhh … I kinda love it … Condoms with tape measure printed up the sides
