LA Intel: Paparazzi

This is what it looks like when Kelly Osbourne leaves InterMix on Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles.

If you are from L.A., you’ve become quite good at casually side-stepping a stamped of paparazzi backing down the street at lightning speed, while your out-of-town guest might become a causality of war. Either way, beware the paps on Robertson! As one of L.A.’s most notorious celeb stomping ground, they are even more dangerous here, and will trample you and anything in their way and spit it out destroyed – be it cones, parked cars, human beings or babies.  Continue reading

3: Rite Aid

If you have ever lived in Beverly Hills, you know that one basically lives there but dreads going there bc u will see 10 people from your life that u don’t want to want to see.

It’s quite the after-dinner spot for counter ice cream and it’s not uncommon to see Jessica Alba in black tie coming from a post premiere party just for the beloved late night snack.

For BH kids who grew up on the ice cream, they also grew up on the Rite Aid lines, a tradition founded by the lackadaisical management of Thrifty’s. Since we were 5 they haven’t figured out how to deal with the check out counters.

Locals still call it Thrifty.

Persian kids from Beverly hang out in the parking lot. As does the token homeless man.

Few dare venture to the underground parking — #terrifying.

Sometimes you are charged for parking, sometimes you are not.

What’s with all those people camped out at the blood pressure machine in back?

We really shouldn’t but everybody goes. And we will keep doing it. Because we have no choice.

Fact: Rite Aid won’t sell shaving cream in October.

Meander through the isles, check out cars in the parking lot, get some ice creme, and wait for your medications to to come up.

If you loose your friends, simple stand in from of this mirror.

Uh, by the way, this mirror was specifically installed to keep the kids from stealing markers and spray paint.

This is the shopping cart Rite Aid wants me to use.

I Love You, But … L.A. Fashion Week will never happen

Here’s why.

We’re not haters. There is actually an industry specific reason for this. We shall explain.

Since Smashbox gave up doing bi-annual shows with Mercedez Benz after the recession, there has been lots of minor operations try to set up things around L.A. … L.A. Fashion Weekend held at Sunset Gower, Style L.A. Week held at Vibiana, CONCEPT LA Fashion Week, and Beverly Hills Fashion Weekend at the Robinsons May building. There have always been hidden gems in L.A. but they are usually privately held shows or parties at homes, stores, or the Chateau that we call “the secret L.A. fashion week” …

It’s been asked many times how to make Los Angeles Fashion Week more interesting and popular here in L.A. but the thing that is important to understand before you solve the problem is that the concept of L.A. fashion week is fundamentally flawed because all the best U.S. designers including any amazing L.A. based designers will always show in NY no matter what because all the editors, celebrities and media coverage is already there.

There are four main Fashion Weeks; NY, London, Milan, and Paris – and they go in that order for one week each – spanning one month – each fall (mid-Sept to mid-Oct) and each spring (mid-Fed to mid-March). Then all the other countries go … China, Australia, Germany, even the middle east … but the big 4 are where all the known designers show … Chanel, Valentino, Alexander Wang, Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta (even tho he is none of the above, he shows in NY), etc.

These weeks are all so big, another fashion week within theses countries is on par with shooting a flare off the Titantic at 4am while crossing the North Pole. If, for instance, Marseilles decided to have a Fashion Week, they too would have a hard time and only find themselves with the newest and most local of designers participating. So what some may ask … is that not where you can find new and interesting people off the beaten path? Perhaps, perhaps not. More important – the world will most likely never know because such low visibility designers means low interest from the press which means low interest from sponsors which means low to no money … No money means no amenities, hiring of second rate firms, etc. which makes it even harder to get store buyers, celebrities, and editors to go.

Luckily we already have a little something called the Oscars that is about 50 times better than all other fashion weeks, more visible, more famous, and obvi closer to our houses.

This past Oscar week … everyone was in town from Valentino to Derek Blasberg to Olivier Zahm … pretty much the entire fashion world from designers to editors – and we already have the celebrities. Tom Ford opened his store, Rodarte had an exhibit for it’s Black Swan costumes and Andre Saraiva and Paul Sevigny opened a club just for their Euro friends in town. Sounds like fashion week to us!

L.A. Natives ~ We are looking for people to tell tales of cute L.A. stories growing up with their friends in L.A. in high school and what they are all up to now, and where you still see them out and about and where they all still tie in to your life. This is what we think makes the West Side upbringing so special and keeps L.A. a community. We are looking for native New Yorkers to do the same for our New York Reports. Email: natives@dailytruffle.net

**Non-natives do not despair –  if you are on the inside of an interesting situation or group of people, and if you are savvy or have a technical know-how of a topic – we often have non-native guest contributers and we welcome all inquiries!

Photographers ~ Every now and then we could use an extra set of helping hands to shoot events, parties, and sometimes even a marathon. The Daily Truffle is seeking unpaid photographers who are building their portfolio who have the discretion, talent and wardrobe to attend events in our place and take some pics of our favorite Los Angeles natives & royalty. The Daily Truffle photos should all be natural, no heavy poses, no red carpet photos, photographers should be capable of personal interaction and have a good time. You must have your own equipment and be able to turn around a fast deadline. Photos are a joint property between the photog and The Daily Truffle. Email: photographers@dailytruffle.net
