Weekly Juice: Degen Pener to Hollywood Reporter, Montage GM to Hillcrest Country Club, Angie Banicki Sweet 16 (x2), ‘New York Parties Private Views’ book launch party

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

We are still in shock over Degen Pener’s departure from Angeleno to the new Hollywood Reporter. To make matters even more shocking, Merle Ginsberg has joined them too. Her website FashionRules, speaks off the cuff about style events they’re invited to or hear about – we hope nothing will change there! Degen came to Angeleno in 2007 and was very much the face of the magazine and at every interesting party in town. He is well known for spotting chic Los Angeles newcomers from Europe and San Fransisco. He is now the “culture editor” at THR.

More shocking is the recent hotel GM who’s gone Country Club! Ali Kasikci, the former GM for the Peninsula in Beverly Hills who left them to open the Montage one miles away has recently left the Montage to go over to Hillcrest Country Club!! Wow! Just to educate you on how shocking this is – The New York Post wrote a whole thing about his move from the Peninsula to Montage when it happened.  A move to a one of LA’s best country clubs …? Well, that’s just headline news! Click to Continue Reading

Jay Leno’s World Series Trophy Baseball Blunder

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Brian “The Beard” Wilson made an appearance on Jay Leno last night on behalf of the San Fransisco Giants after winning the World Series last week. Brian – the most interesting man in baseball right now – carried the trophy on stage with white gloves and went to set it on Jay’s desk when Jay grabbed the trophy with his dirty paws (look Wilson’s horrified face) and proceeded to plop it on the floor (!) and behind his desk?! I know we are Dodgers /Angels fans here in L.A. but com’on Jay! That’s the World Series trophy! Click to Continue Reading

Women in Hollywood Power List, Written by Nikki Finke

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Elle magazines has just released their annual power list, compiled by my personal hero Nikki Finke. I love you Nikki!! She dedicated one whole section among actors, agents, lawyers, to just “The Murdochs” … lol. Elle had a party at the Four Seasons here in Beverly Hills a couple weeks ago to fete the women … I really must say most of these women on here are not what I expect but if Nikki says it’s true I suppose we all better read and learn … the Talent section is particularly telling of the times – Noomi Rapace (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) & Rooney Mara (The Social Network) are pegged as the next go-to girl for leading lady roles, Snooki is on there (!!), as well as our hero Chelsea Handler, the new Wonder Woman (eh), and all right next to Angelina Jolie and Diane Keaton. Extreme Exposure at the Annenberg Space for Photography – Opening Night Hosted by Wallis Annenberg

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Wallis Annenberg is Los Angeles’ First Lady in civil service. Last week she hosted a soirée to open the latest exhibit “Extreme Exposure” at The Annenberg Space for Photography located just behind the CAA building (known in the entertainment industry as the “CAA Death Star“) in Century City.

Did you know that if Wallis Annenberg was not an L.A. resident, our city would be out one beach club, one school, one theater, one tree house (yes, that’s right, a tree house) and the newest edition to her philanthropic collection – a free admission exhibit space for photography in Century City.

It was a twist of fate and a love story that brought the Philadelphia native to Los Angeles when her then husband began his residency at UCLA; otherwise she might be doting on her own hometown today, where she teethed on art and philanthropy through the works of her father Walter Annenberg, a billionaire and art aficionado!

Extreme Exposure, at The Annenberg Space for Photography through April 2011, is a group exhibit featuring arresting imagery from five unique talents in photography who work on the close proximity with swampland creatures, lush jungles, polar regions and erupting volcanoes.

Extreme Exposure – October 23, 2010 through April 24, 2011.

Placido Domingo Performs at the Alfred E Mann Foundation Gala

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Ladies and Gentlemen ... Placido Domingo

What if you couldn’t hear? What if you couldn’t see? What if your heart stopped working? These are the questions scientist, philanthropist, Angeleno and one of my all-time heroes, Al Mann asks himself everyday. And in those questions, he finds answers that result in ground-breaking prosthetics that connect neurological systems with the external world.

Tonight I met a girl at the Alfred E. Mann Foundation gala who was born deaf but today she can hear because she wears a cochlear implant invented by the MannKind Corporation, the development company run by Al Mann, in her left ear. Tonight she was given a second implant for her right ear from Al Mann and his Foundation. Another girl danced a tango performance she learned thanks to the gift of hearing she now has from her implants.

Kyle & Mauricio

Behind it all Al, and his wife and partner in crime Claude Mann gave awards, honored friends and colleagues and welcomed Placido Domingo to the stage.

Not exactly a crowd to jaw drop – with 400 of LA’s leading philanthropists and celebrities including Wallis Annenberg, Homeira GoldsteinCheryl Hines, Paul Nassif & Adrienne Maloof Nassif (soon to be Real Housewife of Beverly Hills), Nigel Lithgoe, Kent & Joyce Kresa, Barbara Lazroff, USC President Max NikkiasMark Stern (Chairman of LA Opera), and Congressman Dana Rohabaker - but everyone agreed, even the room seemed to change color when the handsome and charismatic, 12-time Grammy Winning opera singer took the stage and sang three songs in Spanish.

Debbie Allen

Claude Mann, who hails from South of France, was dressed in tango red and came over to our table and asked if we had enough lamb and wine, to go along with the Tango tempo-ed, Argentinean themed, black tie event. Claude and Al met one night when they were both at arestaurant with mutual friends and it was love at first laugh; she fell in love with his big joyful laugh.

Choreographer Debbie Allen (who I didnt realize is sisters with Phylicia Rashād – and both are married to strapping b-ballers) was the “mistra” of ceremonies and did a dance number or two.

I sat across the table from Roman Bowsar, Chairman of the Red Cross and later went to visit with Cassie Mann, LA native, Notre Dame alum and daughter of Al and Claude Mann. She was holding court with her BFF Berna Ozlem (both ladies decked in Avkian jewelry), brother Brian Mann, Dr. Jay Calver and his wife, Matt & Leighann Rivera, Bravo’s new leading lady Kyle Richard (Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) and Mauricio Umansky, Kyle’s husband realtor extraordinarie. Cassie helped put the night together and sits on the board of Alfred E. Mann as Co-Chairperson with her family.

Nigel Lythgoe was also in attendance and told Debbie Allen that the new “Idol” judges have been “a bit too lenient” on the auditions just before he turned and waived his bidding mallet to donate $5000 for a deaf child’s cochlear implant.

I spoke with Joyce Kresa at the valet outside, who recently she sat on the Host Committee for the LA Philharmonic season opening gala last Thursday. She and her husband, Kent Kresa, Board Director of Mannkind and Chairman Emeritus of Northrop Grumman Corporation, were both honored tonight for their continued work and friendship with the Manns.

Mrs. Kresa told me she won a Salmon fishing trip from the silent auction and got a few extra days tacked on when she found herself face to face with the donor of the prize, Kyle Washington from Washington Group,  later on that evening.

The silent and live auctions had some very cute other things we bid on like a Pro Mac Book, a Staples gift baskets with mounds of sharpiess stick its, trips all around the world – and an adorable puppy which Kyle Richards brought on stage to help get the crowd bidding – Mimi Danhiel ended up with the winning bid and new pal. Over $1 million was raised in one evening!

VIP Night at the 2nd Annual Los Angeles Haunted Hayride

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Emmy Rossum at Haunted Hayride

LA’s Halloween Thrillseekers Have Sunday-FunNight at the 2nd Annual Los Angeles Haunted Hayride.

Last night was the VIP and Premiere Night of the 2nd Annual Los Angeles Haunted Hayride. This year the event is in a new location of Griffith Park’s Old Zoo, which is a favorite haunt spot of supernatural enthusiasts. We saw a lot of friends, celebs and smelled the fresh air and cool breeze of a fall night in Griffith Park. Guests began showing up at 7:00pm to enjoy a 20-minute hayride through some of the most terrifying scenes we have EVER seen. The location also is home to a 5,000 square foot haunted maze made completely of hay, as well as a traditional carnival area (with lots of food, games and the kind of rides we loved as kids but fear as adults). Celebs and VIP guests were treated to front of line passes for this special night only, such a treat! Oh, did we mention there were at least 75 actors dressed up as the scariest demons, clowns, monsters and headless beauty queens imaginable!?

So what exactly went on Sunday night in Griffith Park’s allegedly haunted Old Zoo? Well, it seemed as though most of LA’s Young Hollywood came out for a night of scares and laughs at the 2nd Annual Los Angeles Haunted Hayride. Emmy Rossum showed up to the black carpet early with some friends to be one of the first to take a 20-minute hayride through dozens of horrifying scenes. After doing the terrifying hayride, Stephanie Pratt sat the next horror out… a 5,000 square foot haunted maze made of all hay! Pals Chord Overstreet of Glee, Josie Loren of Make It or Break It and James Preston of The Gates walked the carpet together before heading down to the hayride. Our favorite Modern Family cast member, Sarah Hyland, looked cute as a button while enjoying a fall night out with friends. And Dancing With The Stars young’n Kyle Massey was full of laughs throughout the ‘Carnival of Souls’ with friend (and real life brother), Chris Massey of Zoey 101. Dozens more of our favorite actors and actresses showed up, and everyone was full of smiles. Halloween is here… and we couldn’t be more excited!

What we ate: Canter’s Deli food truck, Hoffy’s Hot Dogs food truck, Maggiano’s italian food, Tutti Frutti frozen yogurt, hot apple cider and more!

Who we saw: Emmy Rossum, Sarah Hyland, Stephanie Pratt, Melissa Carbone (Ten Thirty One Productions and Executive Director of LAHH), James Preston, stylist Johnny Wujek, Kyle Massey (Dancing With The Stars), Brett Ruttenberg, Riawna Capri (Nine Zero One salon), Jonathan Bennett, Camille Guaty, publicist Melissa Berger, Caroline D’Amore, stylist Jessica Paster, Ben Brosseau, Alice Greczyn, manager Brianne Castillo-Huang, Chord Overstreet, Bridget Marquardt, Natasha Alam, publicist Nicole Perna, Jean Kwolek, Melora Hardin, Dick Horgan, Tanner Beard, Anya Monzikova, Josie Loren, Ryan Rottman, Rob Mayes, Anthony Fitzgerald, Chris Massey (Zoey 101), Joel Michaely, Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville), Nikita Ramsey, Reid Ewing, SBE’s Derek Besenfender, Zack Silva, publicist Whitney Peterson, Sara Murray (Michelle Marie PR), Scout Taylor-Compton, Sophia Rossi, director/choreographer Adam Shankman, Ashley Fink and Dior’s Stacey Kubasak.

So, the story of the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride comes from a history of fact and legend claiming that shortly after the Old Zoo opened in the early 1900′s, the animals starting acting strange, and people on the property started acting stranger. A string of unexplained instances and bad luck started rumors of the Old Zoo being build on unholy ground which resulted in a mass gathering of the community to “drive out the evil.” That night became the tragic end to those villagers when a fire erupted in the Old Zoo. The animals were relocated. Those who perished that night remain on the grounds still trying to battle the evil, yet it is they who will not leave. The zookeeper and his family are often seen keeping vigil of the property and animals, however, there have been no animals present for 100 years. Hundreds of reports claiming the strong presence of unrest has made The Old Zoo a site of high interest by haunt experts and supernatural enthusiasts.

Another fun fact we learned tonight was that the event supported the popular foundation Save Japan Dolphins (www.savejapandolphins.org), the organization supported in the movie, THE COVE. As it turns out, the event’s Executive Director, Melissa Carbone, was one of the five delegates who presented to the US Embassy in Japan to end the dolphin slaughters at The Cove. We love hearing this stuff!

The Los Angeles Haunted Hayride goes on every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday up through Halloween. Tickets can be purchased on location or online at www.losangeleshauntedhayride.com. Ticket prices range from $25-$60, depending on when you go and what level of access/lines you purchase. Discount coupons can be obtained at any Gelson’s Supermarket or Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt location. Purchases support the LA Parks Foundation.

More information on the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride can be found at www.losangeleshauntedhayride.com or on Twitter at @losangeleshaunt.

LA Private School Files: Curts School Fair Los Angeles

Cappuccino cart at Curtis school fair

It’s that time of year when all aspiring parents gear up for the long process of giving “face time” at the private elementary school events, such as the Curtis fair. And these are not even the parents that have children in the school. It’s a long understood situation in this town you have to start applying for your child to get into a top tier private school long before you have even have a husband (or wife).

If you watch Entourage – you know how Ari freaked when his son wasn’t admitted to a good grade school – and in LA, this is  a rawther big deal. If you don’t get into the Center, John Thomas Dye or Curtis, chances are slim you will get into  Harvard-Westlake, Marlborough, Loyola, Brentwood, or Crossroads which means you are doomed for any Ivy.

Us Weekly photo booth at Curtis school fair

The Curtis campus is very beautiful and the building names read like an academy awards roster (they will accept your money once you’ve been admitted).

Items of note at the fair:

  • Auction item for a TV set walk-on for CSI Miami
  • Photo booth where you can get your face on the cover of Us Weekly
  • A proper cappacino cart
  • Celebrity sightings:  Victoria Beckham showed up with her children. This year, Cheryl Hines and Kyle Richards (the last two made a quick get away to the Alfred E. Mann foundation gala at Barker Hanger later that night.

Rides at Curtis school fair

For those of you who missed the Curtis fair today, there are still plenty more Thanksgiving food drives and Christmas carol programs to put on the calendar.

Please Meet: My Bunny ‘Mademoiselle’ of Beverly Hills

FacebookTwitterTumblrShare

Mademoiselle is made by a company called Dandies. Every Morning Mademoiselle gets her bow tied. In the afternoon, she meets with her friends in my room and sometimes rearrange things. Every night she watches movies from her box seat (Prada shoe box), unless she’s too tired.  On Saturdays, she goes shopping for new ribbons and new shoes. On Sunday nights, Kukui (my brother’s rescue puppy) comes to visit her. This is her entourage pictured below and includes Kukui, Mademoiselle’s bunny (the little white one who doesn’t have a name) and her friend from New Zealand who is a lamb (though in NZ they say “mutton”).

I spied Mademoiselle sitting on a Rite Aid shelf (formerly known as Thrifty’s) in Beverly Hills a week before Easter. I couldn’t believe how life like she looked – I’d never quite seen anything so sweet. Years later, my mother bought Mademoiselle her her own little bunny (the little white one of the left) so she could have some responsibility, and a little friend.

I need some sort of beauty salon for Mademoiselle. I use to know of an old doll hospital in Santa Monica where I took my Madame Alexander dolls for repair. If anyone knows where to get stuffed animals cleaned, please let me know.

From left to Right - Mademoiselle's bunny, Mademoiselle, my brother's rescue Kukui, my lamb from New Zealand.

According to Curbed LA, a Hong Kong firm called Joint Treasure International Ltd. has just made the purchase!

If you read The Daily Truffle, you know we are fascinated with the 9900 Wilshire building – or the “old Robinson’s May parking lot,” as it is commonly called by Beverly Hills locals.

The property which heads up the “platinum triangle” entering Beverly Hills is arguably the most important and controversial site in Beverly Hills. It’s like the mythical unicorn of Beverly Hills real estate. Why? Because to my knowledge (and those of others in the real estate field), we can’t recall any piece of dirt that sold for $500 Million.

After the department store Robinson May closed in 2004, David Margulies and his partner Arnold Rosenstein of New Pacific Realty bought the site for about $33 million. FYI – Arnold’s wife Anita May Rosenstein is the great granddaughter of May Company founder David May, and his son is LA native and friend of the Truffle Brian Rosenstein (Harvard-Westlake) who also worked at New Pacific.

A consortium of investors led by Candy and Candy and Kaupthing Bank of Iceland, went and bought the property from New Pacific Realty for $500 Million but they ended up defaulting on their $365.5 million loan earlier this year and handing the keys back to Banco Imbursa, owned by none other than Carlos Slim Helu, the wealthiest man in the world.

Just to recap:

. Sold for $33 Million in 2004 (to Arnold Rosenstein/ New Pacific Reality)

. Sold for $500 Million in 2007 (to Candy & Candy in England)

. Sold for $148.3 Million in 2010 (to Joint Treasure International Ltd in Hong Kong)

Oy! Ouch! And Ooof!
