The UTA Foundation held their annual pre-Emmys party last night at Gonpachi on La Cienega hosted by Aziz Ansari and Rashida Jones – the annual back-to-school fundraising event raises money for their adopted high school – this year being University High School – aka “Uni” for those who grew up here. Friend of the truffle DJ spider performed. Amoung UTA agents and clients at the party we also spied last year’s Academy Awards producer Adam Shankman.
This past weekend saw the Virginia Robinson Gardens Centennial gala and for those who don’t know the Virginia Robinson Gardens is a lovely little appointment only private residence and garden right here in our own Beverly Hills. The truffle has many ties to former and current VRG presidents who are friends.
Swiss General Consul Residence in Hancock Park was very much the place to be this past Monday if you are Swiss and in entertainment. Their regularly held mixers give each of them a chance to discuss their artistic endeavors in Hollywood. One of your Daily Truffle editors has a particular passion for Switzerland having had many a summer at Swiss boarding school Le Rosey. Our hosts Swiss Consul General Bruno Ryff and his partner photographer Donna Parker introduced to many interesting people … Michael Gaedecke and his Swiss Center project an outreach project to preserve an artist residence in Southern Switzerland for Goddard and Remarque ( quite an interesting story!),
a musician from the Hollywood Bowl Christian Poltera who will be performing Thursday eve, and Claudia Deutsch, Artspace Warehouse gallery owner and President of the Beverly Hills Women’s Club. Claudia brought along artwork from her gallery by artist Marion Duschletta and incidentally sold the entire series she brought the next to an attendee at the event (talk about networking that actually works!). Artspace Warehouse has a new show opening next week which includes an eclectic mix of international artists and their interpretation of colors and unique use of materials (incorporating fabrics, thread and other materials).
Artspace Warehouse new show COLORS opening September 21 with an artist reception 7-9pm - Artists include LA artist Hanna Cousins (whose artworks reflect the fusion of her Swedish-American upbringing), LA artist Johnny Taylor (whose pop art mixes an edgy cartoon style with graffiti elements), Barcelona native and LA artist Raul de la Torre (whose successful worldwide exhibition history is a reflection of his innovative use of color, color matching thread and other media) - Biographies and artworks - Artspace Warehouse on fb - Event info on fb
Claudia is also in charge of The Beverly Hills Women’s Club programming which is always impressive; this Friday for instance they will have a Melissa Lawson concert at their BHWC clubhouse in Beverly Hills. They also host weekly cotillion, anyone who grew up in this area remembers going to this … Opening night at the L.A. Opera is coming up …. chairman of the board of the LA Opera Marc Stern and his wife Eva Stern will kick off the season (which runs fall, winter, spring) with a dinner for the Founder’s Circle seat holders and invited guests, followed by Tchaikovsky’s ”Eugene Onegin” and after party. We have many family members who will be in attendance so stay tuned for deets. The season officially opens this weekend. @LAOpera
David Lynch was once a filmmaker, then a photographer and now a musician – he held a listening party for his first solo album — “Crazy Clown Time” — for Soho House members in the Soho House screening room this past Monday for the release of his new album. No need to stop there – David is also a club owner now, having opened Silencio in Paris this month – named after the mysterious club featured in his Mulholland Drive (2001) film. Many guests spilled out of the listening party to cross over the first floor of the members only club (and we were among them) for Soho House’s “Guest Chef Dinner” with N/Naka – a Japanese restaurant in Palms (for those of us who don’t venture that far, thanks to Soho House bringing the food to the people!).
Each course was a spectacular spectacle of sashimi and other interesting Japanese cuisine; for only $85 there was plenty of food along with champagne, Saki, wines and full explanations of everything. Chef Niki Nakayama is one of the few female sushi chefs out there – anddddddd and L.A. Native! Friend of the Truffle Max Padilla helped bring the restaurant to the monthly dinner series. At the Soho House dinner we sat next to well known Australian painter Andy Taylor who we learned has personality plus and chatted with us about his favorite stay – Room #47 at Soho House in Miami, and upcoming Pacific Standard Time (aka PST) – a city-wide art show coming up next month we have yet to mentally tackled – where several of the galleries who carry his work will participate. Andy is married to actress Rachel Griffiths. Also at the dinner was restaurateur Chase Morgan of Taberna in Beverly Hills and his publicist Eileen Colavita of Spin Shoppe PR. Taberna is one of the latest editions to Beverly Hills which opened quietly with a series of 3 small soft openings over the summer attended by many of Chase and his father’s friends and family. Chase grew up in L.A. and went to Harvard before it’s Westlake merger (now the notoriously hard-to-penetrate Harvard-Westlake, which many of your Daily Truffle bloggers went to). Max (Padilla) also slipped us some interesting info on the upcoming Pacific Standard Time (aka PST) – he works with PF Chen, a major furniture collector in Los Angeles, who is participating in the art series of shows – we promise to give a complete explanation of PST soon (be warned now, it’s time to began taking notice of the buzz).
Mr. C Hotel & Restaurant, mon amour, has a new DJ night – the first ever we hear and by design is intended to attract friends and family from Beverly Hills for cocktails atop their lovely wood poolside decks at this still relatively undiscovered gem.
For those of you who miss the days when ASW [ASmallWorld.net] was great, there are still some trying to keep the flame alive … there is an ASW dinner coming up at Joe’s in Venice on September 28. Log into your accounts to get more info! And in world news (according to us)
The 10 year anniversary of the Annual KICKIN’ CANCER 5K Walk/Run & Expo this weekend in Brentwood – the signature fundraising event for The Lynne Cohen Foundation – founded by friend of the Truffle and John Thomas Dye and Brentwood School alums, Amy Cohen Epstein, Erin Cohen Berk, Whitney Rosenson and Robby Cohen to honor and remember their mother who died of ovarian cancer in 1998 at the age of 53. This charity is heavily supported L.A. alumni and parents who are friends of the Cohen family; it’s a strong foundation with lots of programming and a great place to spend your charitable donations. Join us to raise funds and awareness for the early detection and prevention of ovarian and breast cancer. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Lynne Cohen Foundation. Since its inception, Kickin’ Cancer has raised more than $2 million for research and preventive care. See pics from last year here.

Russian gallerina Dasha Zhukova (tho she was born and raised in Los Angeles) and long time girl friend of billionaire Roman Abramovich had plans to start a new art-oriented magazine named after her Moscow bus-station-turned-art-gallery “Garage” – the first issue is on newsstands now! This weekend comes the Emmys and with that comes Emmys parties and we have already given the rundown on parties here …. Our friends over at the Four Seasons on Doheny feted their new StrEAT Menu served in the bar last night, inviting media, hotel residents and friends to try out mini quesadillas, mini tortas with pork carnitas, chicken chipotle cilantro dogs, and more.
