Opening Night Gala for Beauty CULTure Exhibit at Annenberg Space for Photography

If you follow The Daily Truffle, you know we love Wallis Annenberg’s commitment to provide free public services in Los Angeles. The Annenberg Space for Photography is a MUST-SEE for all Angelenos; located directly below the CAA offices in Century City – this is a completely free experience and has very convenient parking. Their latest exhibit is entitled “Beauty CULTure” and explores beauty ideas that have been popular in the last century. Some say beauty is in the eye of the beholder while others have scientifically show it is not. A British study has show the symmetry a face determines the degree of attraction and the Discovery Channel has a video proving the point. The Journal of Young Investigators say even children prefer symmetrical faces … so perhaps there is some degree of both. Continue reading

T’was the Nightmare Before Tim Burton Opened at LACMA

This exhibit is a MUST-SEE this summer. This photo is the actual exhibit entrance inside LACMA’s Resnick Pavillion to more than 8 rooms filled with Tim Burton paraphernalia from sculptures to sketches to movie props from his crazy career in Disney’s animation department and as an A-list director who has brought us the likes of Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Alice in Wonderland, Batman Returns, Mars Attacks!, James and the Giant Peach, Batman Forever, Ed Wood, Cabin Boy and many more! An additional perk are detailed and fascinating tiny sketches from Tim Burton’s illustrator Carlos Grangel. This exhibit just came from MOMA in New York where it was a huge hit with our NY contingency! Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! GO SEE THIS SHOW! (May 29 – October 31, 2011)

Who we saw opening night: Tim Burton, Danny Elfman (composer for Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride,  The Nightmare Before Christmas), Michael Govan (LACMA’s director), Winona Ryder (Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice), Kelly Osborne, Nate Newall, Justin Murdock with Josh Richman and Crispin Glover,  Diablo Cody, Johnny Knoxville, Mira Sorvino, Patrick Hoeleck, Martin Landau, Willow Bay (Huffington Post) and husband Bob Iger (Disney), Abby Bangser (LACMA’s Avante Garde director), Jeffrey Jones (Beetlejuice), Slash (Gun n Roses), and a surprise performance from Jane’s Addiction.

Hudson Bay Co. presents Anna Dello Russo paper dollies

Ciao miei cari! I’m going to be honest, I felt a little jipped after seeing these dollies…. (like how I felt when LA Live Downtown developed over night complete with places to eat that are actually safe to eat AFTER I graduated from FIDM). Where were these paper dolls when I was a child… MORE importantly, where was ADR? Continue reading

Prom Schedule 2011 – L.A. Private Schools (Brentwood, Harvard-Westlake, Crossroads, etc.)

Spring is here; the flowers are blooming, the days are getting warmer, and every weekend girls in gowns and boys in tuxes board limos and set off on the ‘best night of their lives’. That’s right: it’s Prom Season. So here’s everything you need to know about the L.A. private school Prom scene. Think of it as your Prom cheat sheet.

Harvard-Westlake

When: May 14th
Location: Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood
Ticket Price: $100
Theme: None
King/Queen: The winners were a musical theater prodigy for King and an athletic, academic, student council member for Queen.
Afterparty: A few small house parties for one or two limos (15-80 kids)
Stand-out Outfits: Pimp stick/fedora combo, barely-there Haider Ackerman dress,
and a Badgley Mischka couture dress
Point of Interest: Harvard-Westlake students had to sign a contract promising they
would not “appear under the influence at the event” or attend, plan, or buy tickets to
a “non-residential afterparty”. This was due to bad behavior at the HW Semi-Formal
afterparty
Best Ask: A Facebook wall video serenade, interrupting English class with 8 people
holding 8 signs reading “Will You Go To Prom With Me, Celine?”  Continue reading

Double Grand Openings for LA’s Newest Nightspot ‘The Beverly’

I think we can all agree Brent Bolthouse + Guy Starkman is a mucccch better partnership than Brent Bolthouse + Sam Nazarian so good news for all in search of a good bar … And a big thank you for more places opening up in Beverly Hills/West Hollywood. Were glad that whole Cahuenga corridor phase is over. After a few pre-openings last week (read more about The Beverly pre-openings here), The Beverly had two back-to-back grand openings this weekend on Thursday and Saturday (the only two days they will be open for business).

Lady Gaga Channels Diane Pernet En Route to Letterman to Promote New Album

Yesterday, New York native, Ms. Gaga took to the streets of NYC, Midtown to be exact, to promote her latest CD, Born This Way, on Letterman.  Upon looking at pics of Gaga, I couldn’t help but notice the resemblance to kooky fashion veteran and blogger extraordinaire, Diane Pernet. Two peas (or turbans) in a pod!

We’re Still Sleeping …

we have lots to report from the weekend and last week as soon as we wake up

“The Tree of Life” and “Melancholia” – 2 Esoteric Films with Controversy and Big Wins at Cannes

Update: May 22nd, 2011

The Tree of Life and Melancholia have been awarded at the Cannes Film Festival with the coveted Palme d’Or for Best Film to The Tree of Life and the Best Actress actress award to Kirsten Dunst in Melancholia. I picked these films to post on because I found their trailers to be oddly similar, but had NO idea they would win anything in Cannes this week …  Continue reading

Weekly Juice: Grand Opening for Annenberg Beauty Culture Exhibit, The Beverly Officially Opens, Judith Leiber Lunch at LACMA, New Forever 21 Opens Tomorrow

Last night:

  • Grande Opening of The Beverly – this new lounge from Brent Bolthouse, Guy Starkman and Darren Dzienciol – who together also brought you Trousdale – had their official grand opening last night. We at the Truffle always like to get in clubs for sneak-peeks WAY before they open so we were there last week for a pre-opening party. The Beverly being a small venue with large names attached has planned two grand openings in order to accommodate their guests. Interesting guests last night include: Alex von Furstenberg, Jay Luchs, Jason Pomeranc, Grace Fernandez, Harry Morton, etc. Pictures to follow!
  • Grand Opening for Annenberg Beauty Culture Exhibit – it’s not often you spot Giselle Bundchen in L.A. (even though she lives in Brentwood with husband Tom Brady) … quite a big “get” for any party (leave to The A List, I’m guessing since we saw Blake Wassenaar at the door) and massive crowd pleaser for the L.A. art world who came out for Wallis Annenberg’s new exhibit at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City. Extra tents were set up to handle the crowd and a surprise strip tease from Dita Von Teese. Interesting guests include: Halle Berry, Katie Holmes, Peggy Moffitt, Petra Nemcova, Alek Wek, Kirsty Hume. Pictures to follow!
  • Grand re-opening of Maison140 Beverly Hills – not much info on this expect that the hotel is darling and it “re-opened” last night. If you have info on this send it to our tip line.
  • Hangover 2 premieres in Hollywood – some say Zacy G was in pre-hanger mode. Interesting guests include: cast leads Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Ed Helms, Ken Jeong and Mike Tyson, as well as Robert Downey Jr., Sean “Diddy” Combs, Jason Bateman, and Kristen Bell.

This past week:

  • Judith Leiber Lunch at LACMA – a rare West Coast appearance by Judith Leiber brought hundreds of women to the Bing Theatre at LACMA Wednesday afternoon for a Q&A with Cameron Silver about her life, her work and her self-published book on the heritage of Judith Leiber. The LACMA Costume Council put this event together along with a fundraiser the night before in the Judith Leiber store where member were given the deal of a lifetime – 100 bags for $100 each.

Coming up this week:

  • Forever 21 new store opening in the Beverly Center
  • 2011 Cedars Sinai Sports Spectacular
  • Street art doc Outside In: The Story of Art in the Streets sneak peek and premiere
  • Hollywood Life Awards in downtown L.A.
  • Midnight in Paris premiere at the Samuel Goldwyn theater in Beverly Hills
  • The Tree of Life screening at SOHO House followed Q&A with Dave Karger (Los Angeles Weekly) and Jessica Chastain and Bill Pohlad from the film.
