How Christian Louboutin got his groove back

Call me Lauren Bradshaw, as Carrie and I have so much in common we could be sisters, besides the fact that I have never liked Manolo Blahnik !

It is NO secret that I have a major shoe obsession, from the age of 5 on my dad told me I was going to be the American Imelda Marcos.  (*Imelda Marcos was the wife of Ferdinand Marcos, President of the Philippines.  She owned over 3,000 pairs of shoes.)

I would like to think of myself as a shoe collector, rather than a shoe hoarder, as a family member accused me of being last week.  All shoes are equal opportunity with me: If you were to look in my closet, I have shoes ranging from 2$ (from Singapore) to over a thousand.

I don’t know why I love shoes so much?  Shoes just… make me happy !  They always fit and most times look amazing, one can turn a simple black dress or a more plain outfit into something extraordinary with just the right shoe, they give me extra height, which I need desperately as I am 5’3″ (My saying to my mom who calls my shoes “Puerto Rican fence climbers”, = the higher the better !), and they are just plain fun.

For a long time, Mr. Louboutin was my go to shoe designer, but then I feel he had down time (like Marc Jacobs did before and after rehab).  I had no choice but to look to other shoe designers, such as Miu Miu, Givenchy, Charlotte Olympia, Alexander Wang, Dolce Vita, YSL, Zara, Fendi, Nicholas Kirkwood, etc, because the Loubie shoe selection was just not doing it for me.

Another reason why I haven’t been down with the Loubies, is that while I have been guilty of spending 800-900$ for a pair of shoes, I don’t want to spend over 1,000$, for a pair of shoes that will get ruined.  It has been ironic to me that during one of our worst economic depressions, the price of shoes has gone up to some designers charging 1800-2200$ per pair of shoes.  I.E: I have no interest to buy a pair of mediocre heels, that don’t excite me or give me dreams for 1,200$.

Finally, after a year or so, I do believe that Christian Louboutin, the god of shoes, has got his grove back, like Stella :-)

And yes, the following shoes are proven to induce rapid heart beat, temporary change in blood pressure, and lucid dreams !

*I fear I might need, not want, the above pink spikey heels.

The Daily Truffle’s solution to containing BP oil gushing

Due to today’s set back for BP (where an underwater robot knocked the a warm-water carrying tube needed for the LMRP Cap Containment Operation to stay on the well, I have decided to create a fix for BP myself. This fix works and can be used by BP, the US Navy, Coast Guard or civilians with my permission.

Step 1:  Go buy tarp tubing from Home Depot. *This is the material Elliot runs through when he saves E.T. By enough to get from the ocean surface to the ocean floor.

Step 2: Bouy the top so that it remains at the surface.

Step 3: Add weights to the other  end and drop it about where you think the oil spill is.

Step 4: Send BP’s water robots to make sure the bottom is around the well.

Step 5: Ask the BP to bollow Discoverer Enterprise to suck out of this tube (only suck from this tube). Continue to have transfer ships take the sea water & oil mix of the  Discoverer Enterprise to shore as needed. **Please make sure Discoverer Enterprise sucks faster than the rate of oil flow from well. Otherwise we have to develop a tighter seal for the base. **See contingency plan below for this (coming soon).

Step 6. Ask BP to use the 32 centrifuges they bought from Kevin Costner to separate the oil from the sea water. Please do not burn the gas!

Step 7. Return sea water, sell gas to the U.S. Use money to support this relief effort and clean up birds.

NYC: Equus in East Hampton – Alec Baldwin, Sam Underwood

Steve Hamilton, Sam Underwood as "Alan Strang", Georgia Warner

Typically summer theater consists of light comedies not a heavy psychological mystery about why a 17 year old English boy would senselessly blind 6 horses in a fit of passion.  However, this is no ordinary play – it”s the 1970′s play “Equus” – a modern classic – and actor Alec Baldwin seeking to constantly challenge himself as an actor immediately said “Equus” when asked what play he most wanted to perform.  Playwright Sir Peter Shaffer made minor revisions specifically for this performance.

Baldwin stars as one of the two leads, psychologist Dr. Martin Dysart and Sam Underwood serves as his foil, the troubled Alan Strang whose sympathy we gain and whose strange passion we attempt to understand.  Indeed, passion is the crux of the play.   Baldwin’s Dr. Dysart is a fascinating character for he is a tormented man with romantic longings.  Every night he reads books of far away civilizations and dreams of escape.  He lives vicariously through his patients who he bitterly realizes it’s his civic duty to anesthetize of passion when it goes awry and wonders if they are any better off for now they are just like him.

22 year old Underwood is yet another enormously talented young British import Hollywood should keep its eyes out for.  He was impressive to say the least. Newcomer Georgia Warner skillfully plays Alan’s love interest who attempts to seduce him the night he goes mad.  Baldwin is sympathetic as Dysart, and I enjoyed his performance.

An after party took place in the garden behind the theater and an unofficial after party across the street at the Maidstone hotel.  Director Sidney Lumet (Network, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico) was in attendance and playwright Peter Shaffer.

“Equus” runs at the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall in East Hampton until July 3rd.

Crazy bands banned from private schools in L.A.

A few days ago, I was on the way home from having fro yo with the lovely Nola Singer.  My mom called me to tell me that I had to see these bracelets that my 2 nieces brought over to my house.  My mom said something like, ” These are rubber bracelets that have a shape, like a poodle or L for lakers, but when you put it on it disappears.”  I was expecting something like a slap bracelet ?  Something that had a design on it while it was laying flat and then once it was put on the design disappeared…. I was wrong! When I got home I was sooooo disappointed to see a plastic band, literally. Continue reading

NYC: East Hampton store party: Calypso, What2WearWhere.com, Riverkeeper

This past Saturday my friend, attorney Misty Allen, told me she had an invite to a fun store party in East Hampton.  Calypso St. Barth was co-hosting a shopping event with What2WearWhere.com and the Riverkeeper Jr Council for the East End Generation Green Committee to benefit the Group for the East End, Peconic Baykeeper and Riverkeeper.  These three environmental groups seek to protect and preserve the integrity of our natural environment. Riverkeeper in particular has gotten a lot of PR because its a favorite cause of the Kennedys.

DJ Flo was spinning and there were lots of cute clothes to be tempted by.  In attendance were designer Annie Churchill Albert, Amanda Hearst (founding member Riverkeeper and Group for the East End co-chair), publicist R. Couri Hay, and Ari Meisel (founding member East End Generation Green Committee).

What2WearWhere.com is a cool new website founded by Karen Klopp dedicated to helping today’s busy working women make decisions about what 2 wear to different occasions (where).  The site cleverly breaks clothing into different categories: life’s event, workplace, sports & adventure, travel, and packing.  I met Karen at the event and she is  a dynamic, positive individual.  A life long conservationist she also served on the Board of Directors of Riverkeeper.

FYI, for the month of June, What2WearWhere.com will donate 50% of it’s online sales to these causes so be sure to check out the website!

NYC: School’s Out – Grey Gardens event East Hampton

I was excited this Saturday to attend the School’s Out benefit by Hetrick-Martin for the Harvey Milk High School at Grey Gardens, the iconic East Hampton estate originally owned by Big and Little Edie Bouvier Beale which was recently made into a movie starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore and a hit musical.

Their once beautiful 28 room shake shingle mansion was so run down that the Health Department threatened its closure.  However, cousins Jackie Onassis and her sister Lee Radizwell, stepped in and had the house cleaned and all was was right again in Grey Gardens.  Today the dilapidated house has been lovingly restored by new owners former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and his wife, Sally Quinn.  The gardens are lovely and include a pool and tennis court.

Hosts for Saturday’s event included interior designer Celerie Kemble (who is currently leasing Grey Gardens), Boykin Curry, Bronson van Wyck, and Andrew Fry.  Event Chairs were O’Brien Kelley, Brendan Monaghan of GQ events (who did a fabulous job coordinating this event), and Peter Wilson.  It was sponsored by Ralph Lauren, GQ, Solstice sunglasses, and Diageo. Ralph Lauren’s young, hip Rugby line also provided the preppy grosgrain entrance bracelet (mine was pink, green and blue striped) and goody bag which serves as a a beach bag with a hot beach towel with a skull and bones on it.  Love it!

For over 30 years Hetrick-Martin has been committed to ensuring that the over 1,200 youth who pass through the doors of 2 Astor Place each year are given the opportunities of a lifetime – from landmark GED program to job readiness training; from theater performances to dance workshops; and health and wellness initiatives.

This years School’s Out was the most successful event to date raising nearly $200,000.
